Thomas & Betts 2709 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What cord diameter does the Thomas & Betts 2709 cord connector grip?
The 2709 straight cord connector takes cord with an outside diameter of 1.520 to 1.860 inches (38.608 to 47.244 mm). That is a large-diameter range, so it is meant for heavy portable feeder or trailing cable, not for 16/3 or typical SO cordsets. If your cable measures under 1.520 inches across the jacket, the chuck will not close down on it and you need a smaller body size.
2) Can I use the 2709 cord connector in a Class I Division 2 area?
Yes, within limits. The 2709 is suitable for hazardous locations where general purpose equipment is specifically permitted by the NEC: Class I Div 2, Class II Div 1 and 2, and Class III Div 1 and 2, referencing NEC 501-4(b), 502-4(a)(b) and 503-3(a)(b). It is not an explosionproof fitting for Class I Division 1. It is UL listed under file E13938 and CSA certified, and it meets Coast Guard CG293 for marine work.
3) Will a nylon cord grip hold up on a cable that gets pulled on, or do I need a metal body?
The 2709 body is polyamide (nylon) plastic, and the grip comes from a segmented chuck that spreads clamping load around the jacket. That gives high mechanical pullout resistance without cutting or damaging the cord jacket, which is the usual failure mode on cheap compression grips. Where you need a metallic fitting for bonding continuity through the connector itself, plastic is the wrong choice and you should specify a metal cord connector instead.
4) What temperature range is the Thomas & Betts 2709 rated for?
Rated -34 to +105 degrees C (roughly -29 to +221 F). That covers unheated outdoor and cold-storage service at the low end and hot equipment rooms or motor terminations at the high end. Match it to your cord: if the cable jacket is rated below 105 C, the cable is the limiting part, not the connector.
