CRL Jackson® Overhead Concealed Door Closer Bodies feature dual valves to control closing and latching speeds. 90º No Hold Open with fixed medium duty spring size. Closer Bodies fit into standard 1-3/4" x 4" (45 x 102 mm), or larger, header extrusions. These Closer Bodies will retrofit existing Jackson® body style closers.

The Jackson closer body retrofits existing Jackson body style closers, so in most cases the header prep and the existing mounting clips carry over and you only swap the body. Confirm your old unit is a Jackson body style, and check whether you need the standard or extended spindle version for your door and rail stack.
4) Will this closer hold the door open at 90 degrees?
No. This is a non hold-open closer with a 90 degree swing, so the door returns and latches every time. If your tenant wants the door propped at 90 for deliveries or move-ins, you need a hold-open version instead. Non hold-open is the right choice on any opening that has to self-close, such as a fire-rated or secured entrance.
5) I need a heavy duty concealed closer instead of a regular duty one - what are my options?
The CRL Jackson 20-101M-03 is a regular duty body with a fixed regular spring size. For a heavy duty concealed closer, the Norton Rixson 73 Series, Sargent 268 with its cast iron body, Sargent 269, and Sargent 278 with an exposed arm are all listed as heavy duty. The Norton Rixson 0608, 608, and 700 Series closers are standard duty, so they sit closer to the Jackson body in duty level.
6) What overhead concealed closer should I use if the opening needs a Grade 1 closer?
The CRL Jackson 20-101M-03 closer body carries a fixed regular spring size and handles doors up to 250 lbs, but if the specification on the drawing calls out an ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 overhead concealed closer, look at the Dormakaba ITS9613 in the ITS96 Series, the Norton Rixson 73 Series center hung double acting closer, or the Sargent 268, 269, and 278 closers, all of which are listed as Grade 1.
7) My aluminum storefront door is offset hung, not center hung - which concealed closer fits?
The CRL Jackson 20-101M-03 body is a concealed in frame closer that works single or double acting and fits standard 1-3/4 inch by 4 inch or larger header extrusions, and the Jackson installation instructions cover both center hung and offset applications. If you would rather order a closer built specifically for offset hung aluminum doors, the Norton Rixson 0608 Series is an offset hung overhead concealed closer for aluminum doors up to 200 lbs. 8) The door needs to swing past 90 degrees - is the Jackson 20-101M-03 the right closer?
No. The CRL Jackson 20-101M-03 is a non-hold-open body set for a 90 degree swing. Where the opening has to swing wider, the Sargent 269 overhead concealed closer is built with 180 degree opening capability.
9) Is the Sargent 278 a drop-in substitute for the Jackson 20-101M-03 concealed closer?
They are not interchangeable. The CRL Jackson 20-101M-03 is a closer body only, less arm, concealed in the frame, and it retrofits existing Jackson body style closers. The Sargent 278 is an overhead concealed closer with an exposed arm, a different arm arrangement at the door, so it is a design change rather than a retrofit of a Jackson body. If you are replacing a Jackson body in an existing header, the Jackson body is the retrofit path; note that mounting clips are not included, so you either reuse the existing clips or order the correct clip package.
10) Can this be used on a double acting door that swings both ways?
Yes. The Jackson concealed body is rated single or double acting, so it works on a swing-both-ways center hung leaf as well as a conventional single swing. The hanging method (center hung versus offset pivot) determines the arm and clip package you pair with it, not the body.
