Product Warning:

Closers set to comply with A.D.A. specified opening forces might not provide adequate spring power to control and close the door due to varying site conditions and door size. Mounting clips are not included with this closer body. Unless the existing mounting clips are used, you will need to purchase the appropriate clip package for your application. Contact Jackson® Technical Sales Department for assistance in selecting the correct Mounting Clip Package.

CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 concealed closer come with mounting clips or an arm?
No. The 20-101M-20 is a closer body only, less arm, and mounting clips are not included. Unless you are reusing the clips already in the header, you have to order the correct clip package for your application on top of the body. Plan the arm and clip package into the order or the body arrives and the opening stays down.
2) Will the Jackson adjustable spring power overhead concealed closer fit my existing header?
It drops into a standard 1-3/4 inch by 4 inch (45 x 102 mm) header extrusion or anything larger. The body itself measures 11-5/8 inches long by 3-11/16 inches wide, so measure the pocket before you order. Anything shallower than that 1-3/4 x 4 extrusion will not take it.
3) Can this replace a fixed spring size overhead concealed closer already in the frame?
Yes, it retrofits existing fixed spring closers, and it is interchangeable with Jackson and similar style overhead concealed closers. The spindle is 1/2 inch, so it mates with standard Jackson style arm and spindle hardware. What it does not bring with it are clips, so verify the existing clip set is intact and reusable before you pull the old body.
4) Will a Jackson adjustable spring closer meet ADA opening force on my entrance?
Not guaranteed. The spring can be dialed down toward Size 1 barrier-free, but CRL states plainly that a closer set to ADA specified opening forces may not have enough power to control and close the door under real site conditions such as door size, wind, and building pressure. On a wide or exposed entrance where you must hold both ADA force and reliable latching, a low energy power operator is the honest answer rather than a manual closer.
5) What is the closest overhead concealed closer to the CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 for a 250 lb door?
The CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 body is rated to a maximum door weight of 250 lbs. Among overhead concealed closers, the Norton Rixson 73 Series is a center hung double acting overhead concealed closer with cover plate rated to 250 lbs capacity, and it is Grade 1 heavy duty. Both are overhead concealed units mounted in the frame head, so the 73 Series matches the CRL Jackson on door weight when a heavy duty center hung double acting unit is wanted.
6) The opening needs to swing past 90 degrees - is the CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 the right closer?
The CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 is built with 90 degree hold-open, so its hold point is fixed at 90 degrees. Where the opening has to travel further, the Sargent 269 is an overhead concealed closer with 180 degree opening capability, Grade 1 and heavy duty. Confirm the wall and adjacent construction clear the wider swing before specifying either.
7) The door is offset hung rather than center hung - what overhead concealed closer should be used instead of the CRL Jackson 20-101M-20?
The Norton Rixson 0608 Series is an offset hung overhead concealed door closer for aluminum doors up to 200 lbs, standard duty. It is built for the offset pivot geometry, where the CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 is a single or double acting concealed in frame closer body sold less arm. For an offset hung aluminum door under 200 lbs the 0608 is the direct fit; the Norton Rixson 608 Series covers the center hung version of the same 200 lb aluminum door application.
8) Which overhead concealed closer carries an ANSI Grade 1 rating when a spec calls for one?
Several overhead concealed closers carry Grade 1: the Dormakaba ITS9613 of the ITS96 Series, the Norton Rixson 73 Series, and the Sargent 268, 269, and 278. The Sargent 268 has a cast iron body, the 269 offers 180 degree opening capability, and the 278 uses an exposed arm. The CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 is a commercial closer body with adjustable spring power from Size 1 barrier-free through Size 4 regular, supplied less arm.
9) Why choose an adjustable spring power concealed closer over a fixed size one?
One body covers Size 1 (barrier-free) through Size 4 (regular), so a property manager stocking for a run of storefront doors carries a single part instead of four. It also lets you tune spring power on site when wind load or stack pressure fights the door, which a fixed size closer cannot do once it is in the header.
10) Does the 90 degree hold-open on this concealed closer work on a double acting door?
The body is rated single or double acting, and the hold-open is a 90 degree function. On a double acting leaf that means the door parks at 90 degrees on the swing, which suits a receiving or kitchen door you need to prop while carts move through. If you never want the door to stay open, a hold-open body is the wrong pick, since the function is built into the body and is not switched off at the arm.
11) What do I need to specify to order the right Jackson overhead concealed closer body?
Three things decide it. Spindle length, since the body comes in standard and extended spindle versions and the extended one is for deeper header or threshold conditions; the 1/2 inch spindle size stays the same either way. Whether you want the 90 degree hold-open function or a non hold-open body. And the clip package for your specific frame, which ships separately.
12) What is a Grade 1 alternative to the CRL Jackson overhead concealed closer for a heavy traffic entrance?
For a spec calling out ANSI grade, the Sargent 268 with a cast iron body and the Norton Rixson 73 Series are both Grade 1 heavy duty overhead concealed closers, and the 73 is center hung double acting with a cover plate at 250 lbs capacity, the same door weight ceiling as the Jackson body. Dormakaba's ITS9613 in the ITS96 Series is another Grade 1 concealed unit. The Jackson's advantage is the adjustable spring and the retrofit into existing Jackson style headers; the Grade 1 units are what you reach for when the drawing names a grade.
13) Can one Jackson concealed closer body standardize the doors across my building?
For a portfolio of aluminum entrances it goes a long way. One body covers Size 1 through Size 4 spring power, single or double acting, doors 30 to 42 inches and up to 250 lbs, and it drops into existing Jackson style headers as a retrofit. What varies door to door is the clip package and whether you need the standard or extended spindle, so those are the pieces to survey per opening rather than the body itself.
14) Is a Sargent 278 a substitute for the CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 concealed closer?
They are not interchangeable in the same opening. The Sargent 278 is an overhead concealed closer with an exposed arm, so the arm shows on the door face. The CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 is a concealed in frame mount closer body supplied less arm, with a 1/2 inch spindle, and it fits standard 1-3/4 inch by 4 inch or larger header extrusions. If the design intent is that nothing is visible on the door, the 278 changes the appearance of the opening.
15) What is the difference between the Dorma RTS01 and the CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 overhead concealed closer?
The Dorma RTS01 of the RTS88 Series is a center hung side load overhead concealed closer, double or single acting, for aluminum door and frame, and it is non-handed. The CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 is also single or double acting, concealed in frame, with adjustable spring power from Size 1 barrier-free to Size 4 regular and a 90 degree hold-open, and it ships as a body only less arm and less mounting clips. The RTS01 is specified as a center hung side load assembly; the CRL Jackson body is the replacement path when existing clips and arm are being reused.
16) For a standard duty aluminum storefront door around 200 lbs, what overhead concealed closer fits?
The Norton Rixson 608 Series is a center hung overhead concealed closer for 200 lb doors, standard duty, and the Norton Rixson 700 Series is a center hung overhead concealed closer with 200 lbs capacity, also standard duty. Both sit below the 250 lbs maximum door weight of the CRL Jackson 20-101M-20, which handles the heavier leaf and adjusts from Size 1 barrier-free through Size 4 regular for doors 30 to 42 inches wide.
17) How does the Sargent 268 cast iron body compare with the CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 closer body?
The Sargent 268 is a Grade 1 heavy duty overhead concealed closer with a cast iron body. The CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 is a commercial overhead concealed closer body measuring 11-5/8 inches long by 3-11/16 inches wide with a 1/2 inch spindle, and it is interchangeable with Jackson and similar style overhead concealed closers and can retrofit existing fixed spring closers. Where a facility is standardizing on Sargent hardware, the 268 keeps the line consistent; where existing Jackson style pockets and clips are already in the frames, the 20-101M-20 drops into them.
18) Is the Dormakaba ITS9613 an equivalent to the CRL Jackson 20-101M-20?
The Dormakaba ITS9613 is a Grade 1 concealed overhead door closer in the ITS96 Series - a complete concealed closer specified as a unit. The CRL Jackson 20-101M-20 is a closer body only, less arm, and mounting clips are not included, so it is ordered when the arm and clips in the frame are being reused. Choosing the ITS9613 means new frame preparation to that series; choosing the 20-101M-20 keeps the existing Jackson style pocket, since it is interchangeable with Jackson and similar overhead concealed closers.
19) Can I adjust closing and latching speed separately on the CRL Jackson concealed closer?
Yes. It has dual action valves, one for closing speed and one for latching speed, so you can slow the sweep for traffic and still bring the last few degrees in hard enough to throw the latch. That is the setting to revisit seasonally on an exterior storefront door.
