Center Hung Doors:

  • 'S' type side loading top arm, CA3010-DP adjustable dual purpose pivot set, and the CA3010-FS anchor set will be furnished unless otherwise specified by the customer.
  • 'A' type, 'K' type or 'PT' type end loading, and 'JO' or 'VO' type offset arms are optional, but must be specified.

Calibre Door Closers CA2232-S-DP – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Calibre CA2232-S overhead concealed closer fit my aluminum storefront header?
The header or transom needs to be at least 1-3/4 inches by 4 inches to take the CA2232-S closer body. That is the minimum cavity the unit installs into, and it covers most standard aluminum storefront headers. If your header is a full tube cut away type rather than a snap together header, order the CA3010-FK anchor set instead of the standard CA3010-FS that ships with the unit.
2) Do I have to order a left hand and right hand version of this concealed closer?
No. The CA2232-S is non-handed, so one unit works on a left hand or right hand door. Positive cam centering keeps the door aligned and holds it closed against normal wind or draft. What you do have to specify is the top arm type, because that is driven by your door top rail depth, not by handing.
3) Which top arm do I order for my door top rail depth?
The arm is picked off the top rail depth. 'S' side loading arm (CA3010-S) suits a 1/2 inch depth top rail, 'K' end loading (CA3010-K) a 5/8 inch rail, 'PT' end loading (CA3010-PT) a 7/8 inch rail, and 'A' end loading (CA3010-A) a 1 inch rail. For offset pivoted or butt hung doors, the 'JO' arm (CA3010-JO) mortises into a 9/16 inch depth rail and the surface mounted 'VO' arm (CA3020-VO) needs a 7/8 inch rail. Unless you say otherwise, the unit ships with the 'S' side loading arm, the CA3010-DP pivot set and the CA3010-FS anchor set. Every other arm has to be specified on the order.
4) Is the hold open version of the Calibre CA2232 fire rated?
No, and this matters on a fire door. The UL Listing and the UL10C positive pressure certification on the CA2200 Series apply to units WITHOUT the hold open feature. If the opening is fire rated, order the 90 degree back stop with no hold open. The hold open variant is for a non-rated opening where you want the door to stand open at 90 degrees.
5) Is medium spring tension the right choice, or do I need an ADA closer?
Medium is the middle of the three fixed tensions Calibre offers on the CA2200 Series (light, medium, heavy) and is the general purpose pick for an interior or moderately sized aluminum door. It is not an ADA opening force unit. If you have to meet a reduced opening force, Calibre offers handicap spring tensions rated at 5.0 lb or 8.5 lb opening force, and those are only for center pivoted door applications, not offset or butt hung.
6) What else do I need to buy to finish an offset pivoted door with this closer?
For a butt hung or offset pivoted aluminum door, the closer comes with the 'JO' or 'VO' offset top arm and the CA3010-FS anchor set with all fasteners. The offset pivots or butt hinges are not included, and neither is the top door stop or arm cover. Order those separately. On a center hung door the package is different: you get the top arm, the CA3010-DP bottom pivot set, and the anchor set, so the hanging hardware is covered.
7) Center hung or offset hung, which way should I hang the door with this closer?
The CA2232-S works either way, and the arm decides it. Center pivoted doors take the 'S' side loading arm or the 'A', 'K' or 'PT' end loading arms, and can be double acting (a swing both ways) unless an applied door stop makes them single acting. Butt hung or offset pivoted doors take the 'JO' or 'VO' offset top arm and are single acting only. Center hung is also the only configuration that can take the reduced ADA opening force springs.
8) What bottom pivot comes with the Calibre CA2232-S and when do I need a different one?
The unit includes the CA3010-DP dual purpose radial ball bearing bottom pivot set, which handles either floor or threshold mounting on center pivoted installations, side or end loading. If you want a pivot dedicated to one condition, the CA3010-GE is the adjustable threshold mount set and the CA3010-G is the adjustable floor mount set. Both are optional and ordered separately.
9) Can I adjust the closing speed on this concealed closer after it is installed in the header?
Yes. Closing speed and latching speed run off two separate regulating valves, and both are fully adjustable after installation, so you tune the door without pulling the unit out of the header. The hydraulic fluid is stable across temperature swings, which is what keeps a storefront door from slamming in winter and crawling in summer.
10) Does a 90 degree back stop closer replace the need for a separate door stop?
The back stop is built into the closer and positively stops the door at 90 degrees, so on a center hung door you generally do not need a separate overhead stop to protect adjacent walls or glass. Two things to know: adding an applied door stop to a center hung door converts it from double acting to single acting, and on offset pivoted or butt hung installations the top door stop and arm cover are supplied by others, not with the closer.
11) Can I order just the closer body to replace a failed unit and reuse my existing arm and pivots?
Yes. The CA2200-B is the unit body only. When you order it, specify spring tension, type and function, so the replacement body matches what is already in the header (in this case medium tension, 90 degree back stop, and whether you want hold open). If the corner anchor clip is what failed, the CA3010-F clip is available on its own.
12) What is the difference between the 90 degree and 105 degree back stop on the Calibre CA2200 Series?
It is where the door stops and where it holds. The 90 degree back stop version stops the door square to the frame, which is what you want when a wall, a return, or a second leaf is close by. Calibre also builds a 105 degree back stop for openings where you need a wider swing for carts or deliveries. Each is offered with or without hold open. The back stop angle is built into the unit, so it is not something you change in the field, pick it at the order.
