Center Hung Doors:

  • 'S' type side loading top arm, CA3010-DP adjustable dual purpose pivot set, and the CA3010-FS anchor set will be furnished unless otherwise specified by the customer.
  • 'A' type, 'K' type or 'PT' type end loading, and 'JO' or 'VO' type offset arms are optional, but must be specified.

Calibre Door Closers CA2230-S-DP – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Calibre CA2230-S overhead concealed closer fit my storefront header?
The CA2230-S installs in an aluminum storefront header or transom as small as 1-3/4 x 4 inches, so it goes into most standard storefront tube. If your header is smaller than that, this closer body will not fit and you need a different mounting approach. Anchoring is by the CA3010-FS set for a snap-together header; for a full tube cut-away header, order the CA3010-FK anchor set instead.
2) Do I need to order a left hand and right hand version of the Calibre CA2230-S closer?
No. The CA2230-S is non-handed, universal for left or right hand doors, so one part number covers both swings. That matters if you are standardizing a building, one closer suits every opening regardless of swing direction.
3) Is this Calibre concealed closer fire rated for a labeled door?
Only the versions without the hold-open feature are UL Listed. Calibre states UL Listing for units without hold open, UL10C for positive pressure and certification to UBC 7.2 (1997) BS476 for fire safety. If your opening is a labeled fire door, order the 105 degree back stop with no hold-open. Hold-open on a fire door needs a release device and that is not what this unit is.
4) What arm do I need for a center pivoted aluminum door versus an offset pivot or butt hung door?
It depends on how the door hangs and how deep your top rail is. Center hung doors take a side loading 'S' arm (1/2 inch top rail depth) or an end loading arm: 'A' for a 1 inch rail, 'K' for 5/8 inch, 'PT' for 7/8 inch. Offset pivoted or butt hung doors take an offset top arm instead, either the 'JO' mortised arm that cuts into a 9/16 inch rail or the 'VO' surface arm that needs 7/8 inch depth. Measure your top rail depth first, that number picks the arm.
5) What comes in the box with the Calibre CA2230-S and what do I still have to buy?
For a center hung aluminum door you get the top arm assembly, the CA3010-DP adjustable dual purpose bottom pivot set for floor or threshold mounting, and the CA3010-FS anchor set with all fasteners. Unless you specify otherwise, the 'S' side loading arm ships. Offset hung units come with a 'JO' or 'VO' offset arm and the CA3010-FS anchor set, but offset pivots or butt hinges are not included and the top door stop and arm cover come from another supplier. End loading arms ('A', 'K', 'PT') and offset arms are options you have to call out on the order.
6) Will the medium spring tension meet the 5 pound ADA opening force requirement?
No. This unit is built with medium fixed spring tension, which is one of three standard fixed tensions (light, medium, heavy). Calibre offers separate handicap (ADA) spring tensions for center pivoted doors at 5.0 lb and 8.5 lb opening force, and those are a different build than the standard tension units. If your opening has to meet a specific opening force, order the ADA tension version rather than this medium tension one.
7) What is the difference between the DP and GE bottom pivot on this Calibre closer, and which do I pick?
The CA3010-DP is the standard adjustable dual purpose bottom pivot, it works for either floor or threshold mounted center pivoted installation, side or end loading. The CA3010-GE is a dedicated adjustable threshold mount pivot set. Pick the DP if you want one pivot that covers both conditions or you are not certain how the sill is built; pick the GE when the door is definitely landing on a threshold. Calibre also makes a CA3010-G floor mount pivot set, ordered separately.
8) Does the 105 degree back stop replace a separate floor or overhead door stop?
The back stop is built into the closer and stops the door at 105 degrees, so you are not relying on a separate stop to protect the glass or the adjacent wall at that point. On a center hung door the unit can be double or single acting, and applying a door stop makes it single acting. Calibre also builds this with a 90 degree back stop if 105 degrees swings further than your space allows.
9) Can I adjust the closing speed on the Calibre CA2230-S after it is installed in the header?
Yes. Closing and latching speeds run off separate regulating valves and both are fully adjustable after installation, so you can tune the door without pulling the unit back out of the header. The spring tension is fixed at medium and is not adjustable, that one is decided when you order.
10) Should I use an overhead concealed closer or a floor closer on an aluminum storefront door?
An overhead concealed closer like the CA2230-S lives in the header or transom, so there is no concrete cutting at the sill and no floor cement case. It needs a header at least 1-3/4 x 4 inches and a bottom pivot at the sill. A floor closer is the choice when the header is too shallow to take a body, or on heavy all-glass doors. For a standard aluminum storefront with a normal tube header, the overhead concealed unit is the lower-disruption install, especially on a retrofit where the floor is already finished.
11) I need to order the closer body only to replace a failed unit, what do I have to specify?
Order the CA2200-B unit body only and specify three things: spring tension, type, and function. Type means center hung or offset hung, and function means which back stop and whether it has hold-open, 105 degree or 90 degree, with or without. If you are reusing the existing arm and pivot, the body alone is what you need. Note that hold-open bodies are not the UL Listed version.
12) Will a concealed closer hold my storefront door shut in a windy entry, or do I need a separate latch?
The CA2230-S uses positive cam centering, which aligns the door and holds it closed against normal wind or draft conditions. That is normal wind, not a security function, so it does not take the place of a lock. The hydraulic check fluid is stable across climate ranges and lubricates the unit in service, which is what keeps an exterior entry door consistent between summer and winter.
