1) What wire size does the Blackburn CTL500-12 lug take?
The CTL500-12 is a one-hole copper compression lug sized for 500 kcmil conductor. It is a single-size barrel, so it will not take a smaller conductor correctly, and anything above 500 kcmil will not enter the barrel. If you are terminating 350 or 250 kcmil feeders, order the lug built for that conductor size instead.
2) Can I use this copper lug to terminate aluminum conductor?
No. The CTL500-12 is a copper-bodied compression lug and should be used on copper conductor. Aluminum or dual-rated (AL9CU) terminations need a lug listed for aluminum; putting bare aluminum into a copper-only barrel risks a galvanic and dissimilar-metal problem at the joint.
3) What does the brown color band on the CTL500-12 mean?
Brown is the die color code on this lug. Compression lugs are color-coded so the installer can match the barrel to the correct crimp die and number of crimps in the tool set. Match the brown code in your hydraulic or battery crimper's die chart before you crimp 500 kcmil into it.
4) Is this a short barrel or long barrel lug, and does it matter?
Short barrel. A short-barrel lug takes fewer crimps and needs less straight conductor behind the terminal, which helps in a tight gutter or a crowded panel where you cannot get a long barrel and the crimp head in. Long barrel versions give more contact length and are usually specified where extra pullout strength is wanted.
5) Does the CTL500-12 come with the mounting bolt and hardware?
No. It is sold as the lug only, one each, so the bolt, nut, washers, and any anti-oxidant or insulating boot are separate line items. Order the 1/2 inch bolting hardware and heat shrink or tape for the barrel with it if the job needs them.
6) If I need several of these for a three-phase feeder termination, how are they sold?
Each, individually. For a 500 kcmil three-phase run you would order one CTL500-12 per conductor end, so three for phases plus one for the neutral if the neutral is the same size, and doubled if both ends of the run are being lugged.
