Blackburn CTL5002 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Blackburn CTL5002 compression lug take?
The CTL5002 is sized for 500 kcmil copper conductor. It is a one-conductor, two-hole tongue lug with a short barrel, so it terminates a single 500 kcmil cable per lug. If your feeder is a different size, you need a different catalog number in the CTL family, since the barrel is not adjustable.
2) Will the Blackburn CTL5002 bolt to a 1/2 inch stud on my panelboard or bus bar?
Yes. The tongue is punched for 1/2 inch stud size, two holes. Confirm your bus or breaker pad has two 1/2 inch landing holes on matching centers before you crimp, because a two-hole tongue will not adapt to a single-stud pad.
3) Is the CTL5002 lug copper only, or can I use it on aluminum conductor?
It is a copper lug, built for copper conductor. Do not use it to terminate aluminum cable. For aluminum or dual-rated feeders you want a lug marked AL9CU, not a copper-only compression barrel.
4) What does the brown color band on the CTL5002 mean?
Brown is the die color code for this barrel. Compression lugs are color coded so the installer can match the lug to the correct crimp die and number of crimps in the tool chart. Use the brown die set called out by your crimper's chart for this barrel; a mismatched die gives a crimp that fails pull test.
5) What is the difference between a short barrel and a long barrel 500 kcmil lug?
The CTL5002 is a standard short barrel type. Short barrel lugs take fewer crimps and fit tight gear where there is not much room between the cable entry and the landing pad. A long barrel takes more crimps over a longer contact length and is the choice where the application calls for added pullout strength and you have the depth to seat it.
6) Does the CTL5002 come as a pack or a single lug?
It sells as each, one lug per unit. A three-phase plus neutral termination needs four, so count your conductors and order accordingly. Lugs come bare; crimp dies, hardware for the stud, and any insulating boot are separate.
7) Where is the Blackburn CTL5002 made?
Manufactured in Mexico. Useful if you are filing country of origin on a government or institutional submittal package.
