Blackburn CTL10002 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Blackburn CTL10002 compression lug take?
The CTL10002 is sized for 1000 kcmil copper conductor, which is what the 1000 in the description refers to. It is a copper compression lug, so it goes on copper cable only, not aluminum.
2) Will the Blackburn CTL10002 lug bolt to a 1/2 inch stud on my bus bar?
Yes. The tongue is punched for 1/2 inch stud size, and it is a two-hole pad, so you need two 1/2 inch landing holes at matching centers on the pad or bus. A single-hole lug will not swap straight into a two-hole drilling.
3) Is this Blackburn lug rated for medium voltage terminations?
It carries a 35 kV voltage rating, which covers medium voltage feeder and switchgear terminations as well as anything below. It is UL listed under file E9809.
4) Can I use the Blackburn CTL10002 on aluminum cable?
No. This is a copper-bodied lug intended for copper conductor. For aluminum or dual-rated runs you need an AL9CU listed connector instead. Putting copper-only hardware on aluminum cable is a code and connection-integrity problem, not just a preference.
5) What does short barrel mean on the CTL10002, and when would I want it?
Short barrel means a shorter compression sleeve behind the tongue than a standard long barrel lug of the same conductor size. Electricians reach for it in tight terminations, crowded gutters, and panel or switchgear cabinets where there isn't room for a full length barrel behind the pad. Fewer crimps go on a short barrel, so follow the die and crimp count called out for the part.
6) Do I need a crimp tool for the Blackburn CTL10002 or can it be bolted on?
This is a compression lug, not a mechanical set-screw connector. You need a hydraulic crimper and the correct die for 1000 kcmil copper to make up the barrel. The 1/2 inch two-hole tongue then bolts to the pad with your own hardware, which is not supplied with the lug.
7) Is a two-hole lug required, or can I use a single-hole one on my equipment?
Two-hole pads are specified where the connection has to resist rotation and loosening, which is common on utility, switchgear, and grounding terminations. If the equipment pad is drilled with two 1/2 inch holes, a two-hole lug like the CTL10002 is what lands on it. If it has one stud, a single-hole lug of the same conductor size is the right part instead.
8) Is the CTL10002 sold individually or in a box?
It is sold each, so quantity one is one lug. Terminations usually come in pairs or sets, so count your conductors and order the matching count rather than assuming a bagged pair.
