Blackburn CTL6002-38 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will this lug bolt to a 3/8 inch bus stud?
Yes. The CTL6002-38 pad is drilled for 3/8 inch studs, and it is a two-hole tongue, so the bus bar or equipment pad has to have two 3/8 inch tapped holes on the standard NEMA spacing for that size. If your pad has a single 3/8 inch stud, you need a one-hole version instead.
2) Is this Blackburn lug UL listed, and what is its voltage rating?
It carries UL file E9809 and is rated to 35 kV, so it can be used on medium voltage terminations as well as ordinary 600 V feeder work.
3) Can I use this copper lug on aluminum conductor?
No. The CTL6002-38 is a copper compression lug and is intended for copper conductor. For aluminum cable use an aluminum or dual-rated AL9CU compression lug in the matching conductor size, otherwise you get a dissimilar metal joint.
4) Why would I use a two-hole lug instead of a one-hole lug on a 600 kcmil feeder?
Two bolts stop the lug rotating on the pad, which matters on large feeders where the cable is stiff and puts torque on the termination. On 600 kcmil that side load is real, so switchgear and panelboard pads at this size are commonly drilled for two 3/8 inch holes. Use a one-hole lug only where the pad is drilled for one, since the bolt pattern has to match exactly.
5) What does the green color on this lug mean?
Green is the die color code for this lug, and it tells the installer which crimp die and die index to set the compression tool to. Match the tool die to the green code and the conductor size rather than judging the crimp by eye.
6) Does a short barrel lug fit in a tight termination cabinet?
That is the point of it. The short barrel on the CTL6002-38 shortens the overall length of the termination compared with a long or standard barrel, which helps where the cable has to bend soon after the lug in a crowded gutter or a shallow pull box. The tradeoff is fewer crimps per barrel, so follow the die and crimp count for the short barrel version.
7) Is the CTL6002-38 sold individually or in a bag?
It is sold each, so quantity ordered equals the number of lugs. On a three phase plus neutral 600 kcmil run you would order four per termination point, plus spares for a miscrimp.
8) Where is the Blackburn CTL6002-38 made?
Country of origin is Mexico. That is the detail procurement teams need when a project has domestic sourcing or trade documentation requirements on electrical material.
