Blackburn CSP250 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Blackburn CSP250 splice take?
The CSP250 is sized for 250 kcmil stranded copper conductor, and the yellow color code on the barrel is what identifies that size range in the field. Both ends take the same 250 stranded conductor, so it is a straight in-line splice rather than a reducing connector.
2) Is the CSP250 a compression splice or a mechanical set-screw connector?
It is a compression splice, crimped with a die-type tool rather than tightened with set screws. That means you need the matching crimp tool and die for a 250 kcmil copper barrel to install it; there is no torque spec to hit and no screws to re-tighten later.
3) Can I use this splice on a 15 kV or 25 kV medium-voltage feeder?
Yes. The CSP250 carries a 35 kV rating, so it covers 5 kV, 15 kV, 25 kV and 35 kV class cable splices as well as ordinary 600 V work. The barrel still has to be insulated or taped/shrunk back to the cable's insulation level as part of the splice kit.
4) Is the Blackburn CSP250 UL listed?
It is listed under UL file E9809. That is the reference an inspector or a spec reviewer will want for a medium-voltage copper splice on a commercial or institutional job.
5) Why is the CSP250 barrel tin plated, and does that matter for aluminum conductor?
The barrel is copper with a tin-plated surface. Tin plating slows oxidation of the copper and is what makes the connector suitable for use in damp or corrosive locations. It is still a copper-only connector, though, so do not splice aluminum conductor with it; aluminum or a mixed copper-to-aluminum run needs an AL/CU rated connector instead.
6) What does short barrel mean on a copper splice, and when would I want one?
A short barrel splice uses a shorter crimp body than a standard-length splice, which is what you want in a tight pull box, a crowded gutter, or inside a splice kit where there is not much axial room. It takes fewer crimps per side than a long barrel. Where you have room and want maximum pull-out, a standard long barrel splice is the better pick.
7) Is the Blackburn CSP250 sold individually or in a bag of multiples?
It ships each, one splice per unit, so you order the exact count of conductors you are splicing. On a three-phase plus neutral run that is four pieces per splice point.
8) Where is the Blackburn CSP250 made?
Country of origin is Mexico. Buyers tracking origin for federal or institutional procurement paperwork should note that before submitting a domestic-preference certification.
