Blackburn CSP600 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What conductor size does the Blackburn CSP600 splice take?
The CSP600 is a 600 kcmil copper compression splice, which is what the 600 in the model number designates. It joins two 600 kcmil copper conductors end to end. If your cable is a different size, you need the matching CSP number for that conductor, since a compression splice is sized to one conductor and will not crimp correctly on anything else.
2) Is the CSP600 splice rated for medium voltage cable?
Yes. The Blackburn CSP600 carries a 35 kV voltage rating, so it is suitable for medium voltage copper cable splicing as well as low voltage work. It is UL listed under file E9809.
3) Can I use a copper compression splice like the CSP600 on aluminum conductors?
No. The CSP600 barrel is copper, tin plated, and is made for copper conductors only. Aluminum or mixed aluminum-to-copper connections need a barrel rated AL9CU or an aluminum-bodied connector; putting aluminum in a copper-only splice risks a galvanic, high resistance joint.
4) What does the green color code on the CSP600 splice mean?
Green is the die color code. The splice is marked green so the installer knows which compression die and crimp set to use in the hydraulic or battery tool. Match the tool die to the green code and the number of crimps called out on the barrel, don't substitute a die from another color group.
5) Why choose a short barrel splice instead of a long barrel one?
A short barrel takes fewer crimps and occupies less length, which matters when you are splicing inside a crowded pull box, handhole, or gutter where there is not room to run a long barrel and get the tool around it. A long barrel gives more contact length and is the usual choice where space is not tight. The CSP600 is the short barrel version for 600 kcmil copper.
6) Will the CSP600 satisfy a spec calling for a UL listed compression splice?
Yes. The Blackburn CSP600 is UL listed under file E9809 and rated 35 kV, which covers the usual submittal language for a UL listed copper compression splice. It is manufactured in Mexico.
7) Does the tin plating on the CSP600 matter for outdoor or underground splices?
It helps. The copper barrel is tin plated, which slows oxidation on the contact surfaces and in damp or direct-burial environments. Plating is not a substitute for proper sealing, so the splice still needs the appropriate tape, shrink, or mold system for the installation.
8) Is the Blackburn CSP600 sold individually or in a bag?
It is sold each, so ordering one gets you one splice. For a three-phase splice plus neutral you would order the quantity of barrels the run needs rather than a kit.
