Blackburn CSP6 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Blackburn CSP6 compression splice take?
The CSP6 is sized for 6 AWG stranded copper conductors, which is what the blue color code marks on this compression splice line. It is a copper barrel, so it is intended for copper conductors rather than aluminum.
2) Is the Blackburn CSP6 splice insulated, or do I have to tape or heat-shrink it?
It ships bare. The CSP6 carries no insulation of its own, so once it is crimped you insulate the joint yourself with tape, heat shrink, or a cold-shrink kit rated for the circuit you are splicing.
3) Can I use the Blackburn CSP6 splice on medium voltage cable?
Yes. The CSP6 barrel splice carries a 35 kV voltage rating, so it is suitable for medium voltage splicing as well as low voltage work. Because the barrel is uninsulated, the voltage rating is only realized once you rebuild the insulation and shielding over the connector to the cable's class.
4) Can I splice aluminum conductors with the Blackburn CSP6?
No. This is a copper splice for copper conductors. Aluminum to aluminum or aluminum to copper connections need a connector rated AL9CU or an aluminum body splice with the proper oxide inhibitor; using a copper-only barrel on aluminum is the wrong part.
5) Why is the CSP6 called a short barrel splice, and does that change how I crimp it?
Short barrel means a more compact copper sleeve than a standard long barrel splice, which helps where you are working inside a tight box, handhole, or crowded gutter. The tradeoff is fewer crimps per side, so follow the die and crimp count marked for the connector rather than assuming a long barrel pattern.
6) Is the Blackburn CSP6 a compression splice or a set screw connector?
Compression. The CSP6 is crimped with a hydraulic or battery compression tool and the correct die; there are no set screws and no mechanical bolts, so you cannot install it with hand tools alone. If you want a splice you can install without a crimper, you need a mechanical set screw or bolted splice instead.
7) What does the tin plating on the Blackburn CSP6 do?
The copper barrel is tin plated, which slows oxidation on the contact surfaces and on the outside of the splice. That matters in damp vaults, direct burial splice kits, and any location where a bare copper connector would tarnish before or after installation.
8) Does the Blackburn CSP6 come in a bag or is it sold one at a time?
The CSP6 is sold each, so quantity one is a single splice connector. Count both ends of every splice when you build a takeoff for a job.
