OATEY A9803E Dearborn® 1-1/2 in. x 16 in. Double Flanged Strainer Tailpiece

It's a 1-1/2 inch Dearborn strainer tailpiece flanged on both ends, so it sits under a standard 1-1/2 inch sink strainer body and drops into a 1-1/2 inch slip-joint connection with a washer and slip nut. The flange on each end is what the nut and washer seat against, so you don't need a separate friction ring. It will not adapt a 1-1/4 inch lavatory drain without a reducing washer.

Yes. The Dearborn tailpiece can be cut to the length you need. Because both ends come flanged, cutting removes the flange on the cut end, so plan to cut the end that goes into the slip joint and use a slip washer there, keeping the factory flange at the strainer. The 16 inch length gives you the most room to trim; Oatey also makes the same tailpiece in 4, 6, 8 and 12 inch lengths if you'd rather start closer to final size.

The Dearborn A9803E is polypropylene and meets ASTM F409 and is IAPMO Listed, which is what most jurisdictions reference for plastic drain fittings under a sink. Plastic is the normal choice for maintenance work in apartments and rental units because it won't corrode from drain cleaners. Where a specification calls out exposed metal trim, a chrome-plated brass tailpiece is the right call instead.

A double flanged tailpiece has a rolled flange on each end rather than a plain cut end. The flange gives the slip washer and nut a positive shoulder to compress against, which keeps the tube from pulling through the joint. Use it where the tailpiece has to be removed and reassembled often, or where a long drop like the 16 inch puts weight on the joint. A plain-end tailpiece relies on friction and is more likely to slip under load.

The A9803E is the tailpiece tube only, 1-1/2 inch by 16 inch. Slip nuts and washers for the trap connection are ordered separately, so check what's already on the trap arm before you go out. The strainer body or basket strainer is also a separate item.

Black. The Dearborn tailpiece is produced in white or black polypropylene, and the A9803E is the black version. Under a sink cabinet it's not seen, so color is cosmetic, but if you're matching an existing white plastic trap assembly on an exposed pedestal or wall-hung sink, the white version is the one to order.
