OATEY P9803 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey Dearborn P9803 tailpiece connect to a standard kitchen sink basket strainer?
Yes. The P9803 is flanged on one end specifically for connection to a sink strainer, and it is a 1-1/2 in. tailpiece, which is the standard kitchen sink drain size. The flange seats against the strainer body and is held by the strainer's slip nut and washer.
2) Is 12 inches too long for my sink trap, or can I cut the Oatey P9803 tailpiece down?
The P9803 is the 12 in. length in the Dearborn flanged strainer tailpiece line, which also comes in 4 in., 6 in. and 8 in. It's polypropylene, so the plain (unflanged) end cuts cleanly with a hacksaw or tubing cutter if you need to shorten it to meet the trap. Cut from the plain end only, never the flanged end.
3) Does the Oatey P9803 tailpiece meet plumbing code for a sink drain?
It meets ASTM F409, the standard for thermoplastic tubular drain fittings, and it is IAPMO Listed. Those are the two things an inspector on a Uniform Plumbing Code job typically looks for on plastic tubular waste.
4) What's the difference between a flanged strainer tailpiece and a threaded or slip-joint tailpiece?
A flanged tailpiece like the P9803 has a flared lip on the top end that seats directly into the bottom of a basket strainer, a connection Oatey calls Hi-Line (Flanged). A threaded tailpiece screws onto a strainer or a lavatory pop-up body instead, and a plain slip-joint extension has no flange at all and joins tube-to-tube with a washer. If the strainer under your sink ends in a nut that captures a flared tube, the flanged version is what you need.
5) Will the P9803 work with a 1-1/2 in. P-trap from a different brand?
Yes. The plain end is 1-1/2 in. nominal tubular, so it joins to any 1-1/2 in. slip-joint P-trap or waste arm with a standard slip nut and beveled washer regardless of maker. Oatey describes the tailpiece as a universal design for that reason. Only match the size, 1-1/2 in. to 1-1/2 in.
6) Can I use the P9803 tailpiece on a bathroom lavatory sink?
Only if the lavatory drain body is a 1-1/2 in. flanged outlet. Most bath lavatories use a 1-1/4 in. pop-up drain and a 1-1/4 in. tailpiece, so this one won't fit them. The 1-1/2 in. flanged size is a kitchen, bar, or utility sink strainer part.
7) Why choose a 12 inch tailpiece instead of a 4 or 6 inch one?
Length is about the drop from the strainer to the trap arm. A 12 in. flanged tailpiece is for deep bowls, island sinks, or retrofits where the P-trap sits well below the basin, and it lets you cut to the exact drop on site. Shorter 4 in., 6 in. and 8 in. versions of the same Dearborn tailpiece suit shallow cabinets where the trap sits close under the sink.
8) Is this Oatey tailpiece plastic or metal, and will it hold up in a rental or commercial kitchen?
It's polypropylene, not metal. Polypropylene won't corrode the way thin-wall chrome brass tubular does, which is why it's common in multi-family and MRO drain work. The tradeoff is appearance: it's white, so it's usually used inside a cabinet rather than on an exposed pedestal or wall-hung sink where a finished metal tailpiece is expected.
9) Does the P9803 come with a slip nut and washer, or do I need to order those separately?
The P9803 is the tailpiece tube itself, 1-1/2 in. x 12 in. with the strainer flange formed on one end. The nut and washer that clamp the flange to the strainer normally come with the basket strainer, and the slip joint nut and washer at the trap end come with the P-trap. If you're replacing only the tailpiece, plan to reuse or buy those separately.
10) Is the Oatey Dearborn P9803 available in black as well as white?
The P9803 as stocked is white. Oatey makes this Dearborn tailpiece line in white or black polypropylene, so if a black tube is specified, look for the black version of the same tailpiece rather than assuming this part number covers it.
