The flange is the flared top end that seats up inside the sink strainer body and is held by the strainer's coupling nut. That is the Hi-Line (flanged) connection style. If your strainer takes a flanged tailpiece, this is the right part. If the strainer instead threads directly to a straight, threaded tailpiece, a flanged piece will not seal there.
