The Dearborn 764A-1 is a 1-1/4 inch overflow plug with an 8 inch tube length, so it suits a standard 1-1/4 inch bath waste and overflow tube. The overflow plug family also runs in 5, 6, and 12 inch lengths, so if your overflow tube sits closer to or farther from the waste tee than 8 inches, order the matching length instead.

That is what it is built for. The 764A-1 is a two piece brass overflow plug with a sloped gasket, and the sloped gasket is the part that matters: it seats against the angled face of the overflow opening so the tub holds water above the overflow line during a fill test or a soak test. Tighten the two piece assembly until the gasket compresses against the overflow face.

It is a test plug, used to close off the overflow so the waste system can be filled and inspected. Once the test passes, it comes out and the finish overflow plate goes on. The brass body and chrome finish hold up to being installed and removed on job after job rather than being a one use plastic plug.

The length is the tube that reaches from the overflow opening down toward the waste connection, so pick it off the distance in your rough-in. The 764A-1 is the 8 inch version in 1-1/4 inch; the same patent overflow plug is made in 5, 6, and 12 inch. Measure before ordering, because a tube that is too long will bottom out in the tee and a short one will not reach.

Brass at 20 gauge, chrome finished, weighing 0.6 pounds. That is a metal tube and plug rather than a stamped light weight part, which is why plumbers carrying it as test gear get more than one job out of it.
