1) Can I use the Dearborn 816 as a drop-in replacement for a worn out strainer in an existing commercial sink?
If the sink opening is the 4 inch commercial size, yes. Cut away the old putty, back off the old locknut, and the 816 goes in the same way with its own washer and extra wide locknut. You'll be reusing your existing trap connection below, so confirm the tailpiece thread on your current assembly lines up before you pull the old unit.
2) Is the Dearborn 816 sink strainer durable enough for a restaurant or high traffic commercial kitchen sink?
That's what it's built for. The 816 uses a cast brass body with a stainless steel basket, a brass slide post, a cast brass stopper and a brass locknut. All the load bearing and wearing parts are metal rather than plastic, which is why it holds up to constant use in food service and institutional kitchens.
3) How does the Dearborn 816 strainer mount to the sink, and does it need a special connection?
It's a threaded installation. The body drops through the sink opening from above and is drawn down with the brass locknut underneath, sealing against the sink deck with the supplied extra thick washer. From there the tailpiece threads into your P-trap assembly, so no soldering or adhesive is involved.
4) Does the Oatey 816 basket strainer come with the stopper and the sealing washer, or do I have to buy those separately?
The cast brass stopper basket and the extra thick sealing washer both come with the 816. What is not part of it is the plumber's putty or silicone you'll want under the flange, and the trap and tailpiece connection below the sink if those aren't already in place.
