OATEY P7224 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What comes in the Oatey Dearborn P7224 bath waste kit, and do I need to buy anything else to finish the rough-in?
The P7224 is a full kit for a Dearborn Traditional bath waste and overflow system, so the drain body, overflow, touch-toe stopper and the chrome finish trim ship together. The tee is included as well. It is PVC and joins by solvent weld, so what you supply on the job is the PVC primer and cement plus the trap arm and trap connecting it to the branch drain.
2) Is the Oatey P7224 bath waste PVC or ABS, and will it glue to my existing drain piping?
PVC, Schedule 40, joined by solvent weld. It cements to PVC drain piping with PVC primer and cement. It will not solvent weld to ABS, and it is not a slip-joint or threaded connection, so if the tub drain piping in the wall is ABS you either need the ABS version of the Dearborn kit or a proper transition coupling at the joint.
3) How does a touch-toe tub stopper work, and should I use one instead of a trip lever or lift-and-turn drain?
A touch-toe stopper is an all-in-one plug that seats in the drain body: press it down with your foot to close, press again to pop it open. There is no linkage running up inside the overflow tube, which is the practical difference from a trip lever waste, where a rod and plunger inside the pipe is what fails and what a maintenance tech has to pull apart. Choose the touch-toe when you want fewer moving parts inside the wall on a rental or a multi-family unit. Choose a trip lever when the spec or the existing faceplate calls for a lever handle at the overflow.
4) Does the Oatey P7224 overflow plate cover a standard overflow opening, and what does the 1-hole faceplate mean?
The overflow faceplate on the P7224 is a 1 hole style, meaning a plain cover plate with a single center screw and no lever slot. That is the right plate for a touch-toe waste, since nothing operates through the overflow. If you are swapping out a trip lever waste and want to reuse the opening, the plate will cover it, but the old lever body has to come out with it; you cannot mix a lever faceplate onto this kit.
5) Will the Oatey P7224 seal against a fiberglass or acrylic tub, or only cast iron?
The overflow gasket is foam rubber, which compresses against the shell around the overflow opening. That works on fiberglass and acrylic tubs as well as steel and cast iron. Foam rubber is the softer of the common gasket types and takes up the slight contour of a molded tub wall, so it is the one you want when the surface is not dead flat. Seat it dry against the tub, no sealant needed on the gasket face.
6) What finish is the Oatey Dearborn P7224 trim, and will it match the chrome fixtures already in my units?
The visible trim, the stopper face and the overflow plate, is chrome. If the tub filler and the shower trim in your buildings are standard polished chrome, this matches. Specify the same P7224 across a property and every tub waste in the fleet reads the same, which is the usual reason a property manager standardizes on one kit number.
7) What is the Oatey Dearborn part number for a PVC touch-toe bath waste kit in chrome?
P7224. That is the Oatey Dearborn manufacturer part number for the Traditional full kit in Schedule 40 PVC with a touch-toe stopper and chrome trim, and it is the number to quote when ordering or cross-referencing. The kit is a single configuration, not a family of options, so there is no suffix to add for finish or stopper type.
