A roller catch holds a door closed by friction instead of a latchbolt. A spring-loaded roller mounted in the door edge rides into a strike on the jamb and pops out when you push or pull the door. There is no handle-operated latch and no locking function, so it suits closet, pantry, and cabinet-style doors, or a pair of French doors where one leaf stays fixed. If the opening needs a door that can be latched shut by a knob or lever, or locked, a roller catch is the wrong part and you want a tubular latch or a mortise lock instead.

Jumbo refers to a larger body and roller than the standard catch, which gives more holding force. Heavier or taller doors, and doors that get pulled by air movement when an HVAC system cycles, will pop open with a small ball catch. A ball catch uses a spring-loaded ball that drags across the strike; the roller here rolls, so it releases with less wear and less noise over many cycles. On a light closet door, a standard catch is plenty. On a heavy solid-core or a tall pantry door, the jumbo is the one that will actually keep it shut.

Brass is the substrate. Those are the only two, so if your openings are brass or black, this catch will not blend in.

That is one of the common uses. On a pair, the inactive leaf is usually held by flush bolts at head and sill, and a catch at the top or the strike edge keeps the leaf from drifting. A jumbo roller gives enough holding force for a full-height glass door where a small catch would let the leaf rattle. It does not lock the leaf, so it does not replace flush bolts for security; it stops movement.

Yes, and that is often the point of using one. The catch mortises into the door edge and the strike screws to the jamb, so no 2-1/8 inch cross bore is required. That makes it the fix for a slab door hung without a bore, a bypass or bi-fold-style panel you want to hold shut, or a door where you want a clean face with only a pull. If the door already has a bore and you want to keep the knob operational, a roller catch will not connect to that knob.

For the openings a catch belongs on, yes. A brass heavy duty jumbo body stands up to the cycle count on a corridor storage door, a housekeeping closet, or an apartment pantry far better than a stamped catch. What it is not is a security or life-safety device. Anything on your drawings calling for a rated latch, an ANSI graded lock, or a fire-rated opening needs a proper latchset; a catch has no bolt and no rating behind it.

Usually, if the existing catch is a small ball catch or a worn one that has lost spring tension. Stepping up to a heavy duty jumbo roller increases the holding force at the strike, which is what keeps a door shut against a slight out-of-plumb frame or air pressure from a return vent. What it will not fix is a door that is genuinely out of square or hinge-bound, since the roller has to line up with the strike to engage at all. Check that the door edge sits flush against the stop before you blame the catch.

A roller catch is a two-piece assembly by nature, the roller body that mortises into the door edge and the strike that mounts on the jamb, and they are matched to each other. Order the finish you need on the catch and the strike arrives in that same finish. What you supply on the job is the chisel work for the mortise and the wood screws for the jamb if your framing calls for something longer than what ships.
