Deltana 12SB 12" Surface Bolt, Heavy-Duty, Solid Brass

That's the usual job for it. A surface bolt is a secondary, inside-only device. The other fire rated bolts in the same class are steel - the Ives SB1600 with its 3-1/2 inch throw and the Ives SB360 in 12 inch length with a 1-1/4 inch throw are both heavy-duty steel. The Deltana 12SB is solid brass in a 12 inch heavy-duty body, so where the fire rating is the controlling requirement and brass is wanted for the finish match, the SB1640 is the part to quote.

The Deltana 12SB is a manually operated surface bolt - it is thrown and retracted by hand from the inside face of the door. If the requirement is that the bolt cannot be released by anyone who reaches it, the Ives SB1630 is the one to specify instead: a heavy-duty steel locking surface bolt with a 1 inch throw and keyed security, carrying a 3-hour UL listed fire rating. That keyed function is what a storage room, mechanical room, or tenant space needs when hand operation is not acceptable.

Throw is the distance the bar projects past the door edge into the strike, and it is the spec that decides whether a bolt reaches a header strike across a gap. The Ives SB1600 is the long-throw option in steel: a heavy-duty surface bolt with a 3-1/2 inch throw, and it is fire rated. That is a meaningfully longer projection than the Ives SB1640, which is a fire rated brass surface bolt with a 1 inch throw. The Deltana 12SB is a 12 inch heavy-duty solid brass bolt, so pick it for the brass body and finish match and pick the SB1600 when the reach to the strike is the governing dimension.

Solid brass, both the listed material and the substrate. That matters in two places: exterior or coastal openings where a plated steel bolt will rust through at the rod, and interior work where the bolt has to match solid brass hinges and levers and hold its color the same way. Steel bodied bolts like the Ives SB1600 and SB360 are the alternative when you want steel instead.

Eleven finishes, and the spread is wide enough to match most existing trim: PVD Polished Brass, Polished Brass, Unlacquered Brass, Antique Brass, Polished Nickel, Brushed Nickel, Antique Nickel, Polished Chrome, Brushed Chrome, Oil Rubbed Bronze, and Paint Black. PVD Polished Brass is the one to specify if you want the brass color to hold up without polishing; Unlacquered Brass is the opposite choice, it will patina. For a fleet of doors, order the strikes in the same finish at the same time so the plating batches match.

Only on the inside face. A surface bolt mounts to the interior side of the door, so on an out-swing exterior door it works fine, you're throwing it from inside the building. What it will not do is secure a door you need to operate from outside, and it should not be the only thing holding an egress door, since it has to be thrown and retracted by hand. Solid brass construction is the right call outdoors compared with a plated steel bolt.

The 12SB itself is the 12 inch rod.
