Deltana 8SB 8" Surface Bolt, Heavy-Duty, Solid Brass

The 8SB is a surface-mounted bolt fixed to the inside face of the door, so it holds the inactive leaf of a pair by throwing into a strike at the head or the sill. That is the normal use: pin the inactive leaf, let the active leaf latch against it. It is not a latch or a lock in its own right, so the active leaf still needs its own lockset. Because it mounts on the surface rather than being morticed in, you do not have to prep the door edge for it.

Eight inches is the rod length of the bolt, not its throw. That is the overall bar you are fastening to the door face, so measure your available flat run above the door edge (or below it, for a floor strike) before ordering. On a door with an 8 inch or shorter clear stile run, step down to a shorter bolt such as the Emtek 8511, which is a 6 inch solid brass surface bolt.

When the opening carries a fire label, the Ives SB1600 is the steel counterpart to look at: it is a heavy duty steel surface bolt with a 3-1/2 inch throw and it is fire rated. That is a different job from the 8SB: keyed control of the bolt rather than a hand-operated brass bolt in a decorative finish.

Solid brass, both the material and the substrate. That matters in two places: exterior or coastal openings where a plated steel bolt corrodes at the rod, and finish-critical jobs where the brass has to age with the rest of the trim. The unlacquered brass version is the one to specify if you want it to patina naturally rather than hold a coating.

Ten finishes, which is why it gets specified on decorative openings: PVD polished brass, polished brass, unlacquered brass, antique brass, oil rubbed bronze, brushed nickel, antique nickel, polished chrome, brushed chrome, and paint black. If you are matching hardware across a building, PVD polished brass is the one that holds its color under handling; plain polished brass and unlacquered brass will change over time. That is the distinction worth checking before you order for a multi-family or hospitality job, because the thin stamped surface bolts sold for closets will not survive a door that gets pulled against the bolt daily.

The Ives SB360 is a heavy-duty steel surface bolt with a 1-1/4 inch throw, offered in a 12 inch length, and the ABH HD1805 is a heavy duty bolt with an auto-locking 3/4 inch stainless steel bar. Steel and stainless bolts are what you specify for a service corridor or a back-of-house pair where appearance is not the deciding factor.

Plan on sorting the strike as part of the order. Deltana offers an assortment of matching strikes for its surface bolts, which is how you get the strike in the same finish as the bolt rather than a mismatched one. Which strike you need depends on where the bolt throws: a frame strike at the head, or a floor strike or drilled hole at the sill.

No handing on the 8SB. A surface bolt fastens to the face of the door and throws along it, so the same part works on a left or right hand leaf; you just orient it up or down depending on whether you are bolting into the head or the floor. The only choice to make at order time is the finish, and it is sold each.

The ABH HD1805 is the auto-locking option - a heavy duty surface bolt with an auto-locking 3/4 inch stainless steel bar, from the HD1805 Series. The Deltana 8SB is a hand-thrown solid brass bolt with an 8 inch rod, surface mounted on the inside of the door. If the requirement is that the bolt engage without someone remembering to throw it, the HD1805 is the one that does that; if the requirement is a brass bolt matched to the rest of the door trim, the 8SB is the one.
