Deltana 8SBM 8" Modern Surface Bolt, Heavy-Duty, Solid Brass

The 8SBM is a surface-mounted bolt that fastens to the face of the door and throws into a strike, so it's the standard way to fix the inactive leaf of a pair. Mount it on the inside face of the inactive door and set the strike in the head, the threshold, or the frame, then the active leaf latches against the fixed leaf. No mortising into the door edge is needed because the mounting is surface, not concealed.

Eight inches of bolt body, so plan on a flat run of at least 8 inches on the door face where you mount it, clear of glass stops, panel mouldings, and raised stiles. On a flush door that is straightforward. On a stile-and-rail or panelled door, measure the flat of the stile or rail first, because the bolt has to sit fully on flat material to run true into the strike.

The Deltana 8SBM is a heavy-duty surface bolt built in solid brass and mounted on the surface of the door. Where the opening calls for a fire rated bolt in steel, the Ives SB1600 is a heavy duty steel surface bolt with a 3-1/2 inch throw and a fire rating, and the Ives SB360 is a heavy-duty steel surface bolt with a 1-1/4 inch throw in a 12 inch length. Both are steel rather than brass, and both carry a fire rating the Deltana does not trade on.

The Deltana 8SBM is a heavy-duty solid brass surface bolt that throws and retracts by hand. If the bolt has to be secured against being thrown back, the Ives SB1630 is a heavy duty steel locking surface bolt with a 1 inch throw and keyed security, and it is UL listed with a 3-hour fire rating. That is a different job from the 8SBM, which is mounted on the inside of the door for extra security without a key.

For a like-for-like solid brass surface bolt, the Emtek 8511 is a solid brass surface bolt in a 6 inch length, and Delaney offers a solid brass surface bolt under part 410309. The Deltana 8SBM is an 8 inch solid brass surface bolt in the heavy-duty build, so the Emtek runs two inches shorter in bolt plate length while sharing the brass material.

Solid brass, both material and substrate, not a plated steel body. That matters in two places: it will not rust-streak a painted door in a damp entry or a coastal building, and the unlacquered brass version is genuinely solid so it will patina naturally rather than wearing through a plating to a different metal underneath.

No handing. A surface bolt mounts to the door face and throws along its own axis, so the same bolt works on a left or right leaf. What you do choose is orientation: mounted vertically to throw up into the header or down into the floor, or horizontally to throw into the frame or the mating leaf. Two bolts, one high and one low, is the usual arrangement on an inactive leaf.
