Deltana CHB4U19 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use a Deltana CHB4 cabin hook as the lock on an apartment or office door?
No. The CHB4 is a residential-duty holdback and light catch, not a locking device. It gives a door or cabinet an extra point of restraint, but there is no cylinder, no keying and no strike, and it is defeated from the other side of a gapped door. For a unit entry or any opening that needs actual security, use a deadbolt or a mortise lock and keep the cabin hook for holding the door open or keeping a cabinet or shutter from swinging.
2) How far apart can the hook and eye be mounted on a Deltana CHB4?
The 4 inch size is the hook length, so the gap it spans between the hook body and the eye is under 4 inches once you account for the hook's own mounting plate. Measure your door-to-wall or door-to-jamb gap first: if the two mounting surfaces sit further apart than that, step up to a longer cabin hook rather than trying to stretch this one.
3) Is the Deltana CHB4 cabin hook solid brass or plated steel?
Solid brass, both the hook and the substrate under the finish. That matters for a screened porch, a sunroom or an entry door holdback where a plated steel hook would rust at the pivot within a season. The finish is applied over brass, not over a ferrous base.
4) What finishes does the Deltana CHB4 British style cabin hook come in?
Nine finishes: Polished Brass, PVD Polished Brass, Antique Brass, Antique Nickel, Brushed Nickel, Polished Chrome, Brushed Chrome, Oil Rubbed Bronze and Paint Black. If you are matching hinges and knobs already on the opening, the PVD Polished Brass is the one to pick where the hook sees weather or frequent handling, since PVD holds its color rather than living-finishing the way plain lacquered brass does.
5) Do I need to buy the eye and screws separately for a Deltana cabin hook?
No, nothing else to order. Each CHB4 is packed individually with one hook, one eye and the mounting hardware, and the price is per unit, so one unit does one opening. If you are doing a run of shutters or cabinet doors, order one per pair of surfaces you are joining.
6) Will a cabin hook hold a door open in wind, or do I need a different kind of holder?
A cabin hook restrains the door mechanically once you hook it, so it will hold a screen or entry door open against wind far better than a floor stop or a magnetic catch, which only stop travel and do not retain. The tradeoff is that someone has to hook and unhook it by hand each time. For a door people pass through constantly, a hold-open arm on the closer or a wall-mounted magnetic holder is the better call; for a shutter, a porch door or a cabinet you set and leave, the CHB4 does the job.
7) Can a Deltana CHB4 cabin hook be mounted on a hollow-core or thin cabinet door?
Only with care. The hook and eye both fasten with surface screws, so the holding strength is whatever the screws bite into. On a solid wood door, jamb or stile you are fine. On a hollow-core door skin or a thin cabinet panel, land the screws in the solid stile or rail, or back the panel, otherwise the eye pulls out of the face before the brass ever gives. The brass parts themselves are not the weak point here, the substrate is.
8) Does the Deltana CHB4 need handing, or does one hook work on a left and right hand door?
No handing. The hook pivots on its plate and swings either direction, so the same CHB4 works on a left or right hand opening. What you do choose on site is which surface takes the hook and which takes the eye, and that is decided by which side has the more solid mounting substrate, not by the swing of the door.
