Deltana FPG1210B – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the Deltana FPG12 on a fire rated door?
No. Specify a bolt that carries the rating instead. Of the surface bolts ZenSupply stocks, the Ives SB1630 locking surface bolt is listed at a 3 hour UL rating, and the Ives SB1600 heavy duty steel bolt with a 3-1/2 inch throw and the Ives SB1640 brass bolt with a 1 inch throw are both carried as fire rated. Use one of those on a labeled opening and keep the Deltana brass bolt for non-rated doors.
2) Do I have to mortise the door for this bolt, or does it screw to the face?
Surface mounted. The FPG12 screws to the face of the door, so there is no routing or mortising and no door prep beyond drilling the strike hole in the jamb, head or sill. That is why it is the usual retrofit choice for adding a second security point to a door that is already hung and finished.
3) I need a surface bolt that locks so a tenant cannot throw it back. Does the Deltana FPG12 do that?
No, the FPG12 is a manual thumb turn bolt with no keyed function. For a bolt that has to be secured against someone releasing it, the Ives SB1630 heavy duty steel locking surface bolt with keyed security and a 1 inch throw is the one to spec. If you want the bolt to stay put once thrown without a key, the ABH HD1805 heavy duty surface bolt uses an auto-locking 3/4 inch stainless steel bar.
4) Can a pair of doors be secured with the Deltana FPG12 surface bolt?
Yes, that is the standard use for it. Mount the bolt on the inactive leaf and shoot it into a strike at the head or the sill, which fixes that leaf and lets the active leaf lock against it. The 12 inch rod gives you reach to a head strike on a taller pair. You'll need one bolt per shoot point, so a top and bottom arrangement is two units, sold each.
5) I need a surface bolt on a fire-rated door - can I use the Deltana FPG12?
For a fire-rated opening, specify a bolt that carries a fire rating. The Ives SB1600 is a heavy-duty steel surface bolt with a 3-1/2 inch throw and a fire rating, the Ives SB1640 is a fire-rated brass-construction surface bolt with a 1 inch throw, and the Ives SB1630 is a heavy-duty locking surface bolt with a 1 inch throw and keyed security carrying a 3-hour UL listing. The Deltana FPG12 is a heavy-duty solid brass off-set bolt for outside-opening doors where extra security is wanted while other locks are not in use.
6) What is the closest 12-inch surface bolt alternative to the Deltana FPG12?
The Ives SB360 in the US2C 12-inch configuration is the closest match on rod length. The Deltana FPG12 is a 12-inch surface bolt in solid brass with an off-set, heavy-duty build, while the Ives SB360 is a heavy-duty steel surface bolt with a 1-1/4 inch throw, also at 12 inches. So the decision is brass versus steel construction and whether you need the off-set geometry.
7) Is the Deltana FPG12 surface bolt solid brass all the way through, or plated steel?
Solid brass, both material and substrate. That matters in two ways for a property manager: brass holds up far better than plated steel on an exterior or coastal opening, and the finish is applied to brass so wear at the thumb turn shows as brass rather than rust bleed. The steel alternatives in the same class, like the Ives SB360 heavy duty steel surface bolt in a 12 inch length, are a different trade off.
8) Is the Deltana FPG12 rated for commercial use or is it a residential bolt?
It is classed commercial and carries the heavy duty designation, in solid brass. Practical read for a property manager or MRO buyer: it suits apartment entries, service doors and storefront back doors where the bolt gets used daily. The lighter decorative brass bolts in the same family, such as the Delaney decorative solid brass surface bolt or the Emtek 8511 6 inch brass bolt, are aimed at lower traffic and shorter runs.
9) What is the difference between the Deltana FPG12 and the Ives SB360 12 inch surface bolt?
Both are heavy duty bolts at a 12 inch length, but they are built for different jobs. The Deltana is solid brass with an off-set body for outswing doors, offered in oil rubbed bronze and polished chrome. The Ives SB360 is heavy duty steel with a 1-1/4 inch throw and is carried as fire rated. Go steel and fire rated for a labeled corridor or stair opening; go brass and off-set for an exterior outswing door where corrosion and appearance matter.
10) Is there a shorter solid brass surface bolt if 12 inches is too long for my door?
The Emtek 8511 is a solid brass surface bolt at 6 inches, roughly half the rod length of the 12-inch Deltana FPG12. Delaney also offers a solid brass surface bolt and a decorative solid brass surface bolt in its Solid Brass and Decorative Surface Bolt series if you want brass in a different styling.
11) What surface bolt should I standardize on across a commercial building instead of a decorative brass bolt?
The Deltana FPG12 is classified for commercial use and is surface-mounted solid brass in a 12-inch off-set configuration, available in Oil Rubbed Bronze and Polished Chrome. For a steel program across many openings, the Ives SB1600 is heavy-duty steel with a 3-1/2 inch throw and a fire rating, and the Trimco 4800 Series covers surface bolts as a single specifiable family. The Delaney Decorative Surface Bolt leans toward appearance-driven openings.
12) Is the Deltana FPG12 sold individually or as a pair?
Each. The unit of measure is one bolt per unit, so if you are doing top and bottom on an inactive leaf, or a run of doors in a building, count one FPG12 per shoot point. Strike hardware supplied with the bolt is not itemized, so plan the jamb or sill hole based on the bolt you receive.
