Deltana FPG1810B – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will an 18 inch surface bolt work on an outswing door?
The Deltana FPG18 is built for it. The offset in the bolt body is what makes that possible: it lets the bolt clear the stop on an outside opening door, which is the situation a straight surface bolt struggles with. Deltana lists these as intended for mounting on outside opening doors, adding security while the main lock is not in use.
2) Can a surface bolt like this be used as the main lock on an entry door?
No, and Deltana does not intend it as one. The FPG18 is a secondary security bolt, thrown from the inside while the primary lock is not in use, on a door that opens outward. It has no key and no outside operation, so anyone leaving through that door has to be the one who released it. Use it on the inactive leaf of a pair, on a rear service door, or as a night bolt behind a keyed lockset.
3) I need a surface bolt that can be locked with a key instead of just thrown by hand. What should I use?
The Deltana FPG18 is a hand-thrown surface bolt in solid brass, mounted on the surface of the door, and there is no keyed function in it. For a keyed opening, the Ives SB1630 is a heavy duty steel locking surface bolt with a 1 inch throw and keyed security, and it carries a 3-hour UL listed fire rating. That is the one to spec when the bolt itself has to resist being thrown or retracted by anyone who reaches it.
4) The 18 inch rod on the Deltana FPG18 is longer than my door needs. What is a shorter surface bolt?
The FPG18 carries an 18 inch rod. For a short reach, the Emtek 8511 is a 6 inch solid brass surface bolt, and the Ives SB360 is a heavy-duty steel surface bolt with a 1-1/4 inch throw in a 12 inch length. The Emtek 8511 stays in solid brass like the FPG18; the SB360 is steel and sits between the two on length.
5) Is the Deltana FPG18 solid brass or brass plated?
Solid brass, through the body and rod, both the material and substrate are brass. That matters for exterior and coastal openings where a plated steel bolt will rust at the guides. It also means the finish is applied over brass, so wear at the thumb turn shows brass rather than a different base metal.
6) What is the difference between the heavy-duty Deltana FPG18 and a standard decorative surface bolt?
Duty and length. The FPG18 is Deltana's heavy-duty offset version at 18 inches, built for a full-size exterior door. The lighter decorative bolts, like the Emtek 8511 solid brass surface bolt at 6 inches or the Delaney decorative solid brass surface bolt, are sized for cabinet, closet, and interior double doors where the load on the bolt is small. If the door sees weather, wind load, or public traffic, the shorter decorative bolts are the wrong tool.
7) I want a surface bolt that locks with a key, does the Deltana FPG18 do that?
It does not. The FPG18 is a manually thrown offset bolt with no cylinder. If you need the bolt itself keyed so a tenant or the public cannot release it, the Ives SB1630 is a heavy duty locking steel surface bolt with keyed security and a 1 inch throw. If you want it to relatch on its own, the ABH HD1805 is an auto-locking heavy duty bolt with a 3/4 inch stainless steel bar.
8) Do I need to mortise the door to install an 18 inch offset surface bolt?
No. The FPG18 mounts on the surface of the door, so installation is drilling and fastening the bolt body and guides to the face, plus a strike where the rod lands. Nothing is let into the edge or the door core. That makes it a practical retrofit on a door that is already hung and finished, including hollow metal and solid wood, where a mortised flush bolt would mean pulling the door.
9) How many Deltana FPG18 bolts do I need for a pair of doors?
One bolt secures one leaf at one point. On a pair, the inactive leaf normally takes two bolts, one at the head and one to the floor, so the leaf is held top and bottom and the active leaf can latch against it. The FPG18 is sold each, so order per bolt, not per door.
10) Which surface bolt holds itself in the thrown position without me having to check it?
The Deltana FPG18 is a heavy-duty off-set surface bolt that is thrown and held by hand. The ABH HD1805 is a heavy duty surface bolt with an auto-locking 3/4 inch stainless steel bar, so the bar latches itself when thrown. On a door that gets checked on a route or walked by staff who will not stop to confirm the bolt seated, the auto-locking HD1805 changes the maintenance picture; on a door someone sets once per season, the FPG18 does the same job in solid brass.
11) What is the difference between the Deltana FPG18 and a plain solid brass surface bolt like the Delaney 410309?
Both are solid brass surface bolts. The Deltana FPG18 is the heavy-duty off-set version with an 18 inch rod, so the strike lands away from the mounting plane and the reach up the door is long. The Delaney 410309 is a solid brass surface bolt in its standard form, and the Delaney BV7600 is the decorative solid brass version of the same idea. If the requirement is the offset geometry and the 18 inch rod, the Delaney bolts are not a drop-in for it.
12) I am standardizing surface bolts across a building and want one series across many doors. What are my options besides the Deltana FPG18?
The FPG18 is a commercial-rated solid brass surface bolt offered in nine finishes including polished brass, oil rubbed bronze, brushed nickel, polished chrome and paint black, so a single model can match varied door hardware across a facility. If you would rather standardize on a steel series, the Trimco 4800 Series surface bolts and the ABH HD1805 Series are both catalog series built to be repeated across openings. Where a facility has a mix of rated and unrated doors, the Ives SB1600 is the heavy duty fire rated member of that family.
13) Is the Emtek 8511 a substitute for the Deltana FPG18?
They are both solid brass surface bolts, but they are not interchangeable on the same opening. The Emtek 8511 is a 6 inch bolt. The Deltana FPG18 runs an 18 inch rod and is the heavy-duty off-set configuration, which is what lets it reach up an outward-opening door and clear the mounting offset. Use the 8511 where a short bolt at the head or sill is all that is needed, and the FPG18 where the long reach and the offset are the point.
14) What finishes does the Deltana FPG18 surface bolt come in?
Nine: unlacquered brass, polished brass, antique brass, brushed nickel, antique nickel, polished chrome, brushed chrome, oil rubbed bronze, and painted black. If you are matching a fleet of doors, note that unlacquered brass will patina over time while polished brass is lacquered to hold its color, so the two will not stay matched if you mix them across an entrance.
15) Is the Deltana FPG18 suitable for a commercial building, or is it residential hardware?
Deltana classes the FPG18 as commercial. It is solid brass and heavy-duty, so it holds up better than a light residential bolt on a service or rear entrance. For institutional openings that need a rated or steel bolt, the Ives heavy duty steel line (SB1600, SB360) is the direction to go instead, since those are steel and fire rated where the Deltana is decorative brass.
16) Will an unlacquered brass surface bolt match the rest of my unlacquered brass hardware?
It will start matched and then move with the rest of it. The FPG18 comes in unlacquered brass, which is left bare so it darkens with handling and exposure. If your existing unlacquered pieces have already aged and you want an immediate match, antique brass is the closer starting point. Deltana also offers it in polished brass if you want a lacquered brass that stays bright.
