Design Hardware 416-HD-AL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Design Hardware 416 HD arm work on a fire-rated door?
No. The 416 HD heavy-duty arm holds a door open, and hold-open arms are not permitted on fire-rated openings. Design Hardware states it is for non UL fire-rated applications only. If the opening is fire rated, you need a non-hold-open arm instead, such as the Corbin Russwin 688F95 regular arm for top jamb mounting.
2) Can I use the 416 HD arm with a regular arm or top jamb closer installation?
Parallel arm only. The 416 HD is built for parallel arm mounting, where the closer body sits on the pull side of the door and the arm runs along the frame face. If your closer is mounted regular arm on the pull side or top jamb on the frame, this arm won't apply, and something like the Corbin Russwin 688F77 regular arm with hold-open or the 688F95 regular arm for top jamb is the shape you want.
3) How does the hold open work on the 416 HD arm, and can I turn it off?
It's a T-turn hold open. The forearm carries a shoe that the user twists to set the door to stay open at the point it was swung to, and twists back to release it to normal closing. The dead stop is a separate removable auxiliary stop, so if you want the arm to stop the door at a set degree you leave it in, and if the wall or a floor stop already handles that, you take it out.
4) Is this a complete door closer or just the arm?
Just the arm. The 416 HD is a replacement arm assembly for a door closer, not a closer body, so it's what you buy when the original arm has been bent, sheared, or the hold open has quit and the closer itself is still good. If your closer body is also failing, you're buying a closer, not this part.
5) Do I have to order a left hand or right hand version of the Design Hardware 416 arm?
No handing to specify. The 416 HD arm is non-handed, so the same part goes on a left hand or right hand door. Pick the finish and that is the whole order.
6) Do I still need a wall stop or floor stop if I install the 416 arm with dead stop?
Not necessarily. The dead stop built into the 416 HD arm is what limits the swing, which is the usual reason to fit a stop in the first place, and it's the standard approach in parallel arm applications where a wall bumper isn't practical. The auxiliary stop is removable, so if the opening already has a floor or wall stop taking the impact you can pull it and let the existing stop do the work.
7) Is the 416 heavy-duty arm strong enough for a school corridor or other high abuse door?
That's what it's built for. The arm is forged solid steel and rated heavy duty, which is the construction you want on doors that get kicked open, held open with a foot, or otherwise abused. Aluminum or cast arms are where you see failures in that traffic.
8) Are mounting screws included with the 416 arm, or do I need to order fasteners separately?
Fasteners come with it. The 416 HD arm ships with machine screws, wood screws, and self tapping machine screws, so it covers a hollow metal frame, a wood frame, or a sheet metal application without a second trip. Nothing else to buy for the attachment itself.
9) My closer sits too low for the arm to reach the frame. Is a different arm the fix?
Usually not, that's a drop plate problem rather than an arm problem. A drop plate lowers and repositions the closer body so the arm geometry works on the opening. ZenSupply carries drop plates such as the Corbin Russwin 188F65 for the DC3220 with full cover and the 597F58 for the DC3210 with full cover, both listed for 1-3/4 inch doors. Match the plate to your closer model, then the parallel arm mounts as intended.
10) What finishes does the Design Hardware 416 HD arm come in?
Three: aluminum painted, dark bronze painted, and gold. Aluminum painted is the usual match for a clear anodized aluminum storefront frame, and dark bronze painted matches dark bronze frames and closer bodies. Match the arm to the closer body you already have on the door, or the two will read as mismatched from the corridor.
