Design Hardware 416-HD-HO-AL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Design Hardware 416 hold open arm work on a regular arm or top jamb mounted closer?
Parallel arm mounting only. The 416 HD-HO is built as a parallel arm assembly, so it mounts on the push side with the closer body on the door and the shoe on the frame soffit. If your closer is set up regular arm (pull side) or top jamb, this arm won't go on it. A regular arm replacement is a different part, for example the Corbin Russwin 688F77 regular arm with hold-open or the 688F95 regular arm, top jamb.
2) Is the 416 HD-HO a complete door closer or just the arm?
Just the arm assembly, a replacement part for a Design Hardware 416 Series closer. You get the forged steel arm with the hold open and the removable stop plus mounting screws. If the closer body itself is leaking or the spring is shot, replacing the arm won't fix it, order a complete closer.
3) I need a hold open arm for a fire rated door - can I use the 416 HD-HO?
No. The 416 HD-HO is intended to hold doors open in non UL fire rated applications, so it is not the arm for a fire rated opening. Its heavy duty forged steel construction is aimed at high use and high abuse areas rather than at fire door duty. For a fire rated opening you need a closer arm without a mechanical hold open, or a hold open controlled by an electromagnetic release tied into the fire alarm. Among the Corbin Russwin closer arms, the 688F95 is a regular arm for top jamb mounting with no hold-open function in its arm configuration.
4) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand version of the 416 HD-HO arm?
Neither. The 416 HD-HO arm is non-handed, so one part covers left and right hand doors. Stock one for a building with openings swinging both ways.
5) What does the dead stop on the Design Hardware 416 HD-HO arm actually do, and can I take it out?
The dead stop is a removable auxiliary stop built into the arm. It limits how far the door swings, so the arm takes the abuse instead of the wall, the frame, or the closer body. Because it is removable, you can run the same arm without the stop where an overhead or wall stop already controls the opening, or where you want a wider swing. The hold open is a separate T-turn function, so you can hold the door open and still have the stop working.
6) Is the Design Hardware 416 hold open arm strong enough for a high traffic or high abuse door?
That is what it is built for. The arm body is forged solid steel and rated heavy duty, aimed at high use and high abuse openings, which is where cast or lighter arms bend and the closer starts leaking. Think school corridors, apartment entries, loading and service doors.
7) Do I have to buy screws separately to install the 416 HD-HO closer arm?
No, fasteners come with the arm: machine screws, wood screws, and self tapping machine screws, so it covers hollow metal frames, aluminum, and wood jambs without a second trip. It is a replacement arm, not a complete closer, so you are reusing the existing closer body and mounting it parallel arm.
8) My tenants keep propping the door with a wedge. Is a hold open arm the fix?
On a non rated door, yes. The 416 HD-HO gives a T-turn hold open, so staff swing the door back and turn the knob to park it open, then release it and the closer takes over again. It replaces the wedge with something that cannot be lost and cannot be left under a fire door. On any rated opening, don't do this, that hold open is not permitted there.
9) My closer sits too low on the door and the arm will not reach - do I need a different arm or a different part?
That is usually a mounting height problem rather than an arm problem, and a different arm will not correct it. The part that resolves it is a drop plate, which lowers the closer body on the frame or door so the existing arm geometry works. Corbin Russwin catalogs the 188F65 drop plate for the DC3220 with full cover and the 597F58 drop plate for the DC3210 with full cover, both for 1-3/4 inch doors. The 416 HD-HO is a complete parallel arm assembly with a T-turn hold open and removable auxiliary stop - it changes what the arm does, not where the closer sits.
10) What is the difference between the Corbin Russwin 688F95 and 688F77 closer arms, and where does the 416 HD-HO fit?
All three are complete closer arms, and the split is between mounting and function. The Corbin Russwin 688F95 is a regular arm for top jamb mounting, where the closer body goes on the frame face above the door. The 688F77 is a regular arm with hold-open, adding a hold open function to a regular arm installation. The Design Hardware 416 HD-HO covers the parallel arm side: it is a non-handed, forged solid steel parallel arm with a T-turn hold open and a removable auxiliary stop, so it both holds the door open and provides a dead stop in the same assembly. Match the arm to how the closer body is already mounted on the opening.
11) What finishes does the Design Hardware 416 HD-HO hold open arm come in?
Three: aluminum painted, dark bronze painted, and gold. Aluminum painted matches most clear anodized aluminum storefront and standard closer covers, dark bronze matches dark anodized entrances, and gold is there for brass-toned openings. Matching the existing closer cover on the door is what usually decides it.
