1) Which length cylinder dogging kit do I need for a Design Hardware 1000 Series exit device, 33 inch or 42 inch?
Match the kit to the device length. The CD-1000 33 inch kit goes on standard length 1000 Series devices, and the CD-1000 42 inch kit goes on the long devices. The kit includes a new slide cover, so the length has to match the rail you already have on the door.
2) What does cylinder dogging actually do on an exit device?
It lets you hold the push bar down with a key instead of a hex key. With the bar dogged, the latch stays retracted and the opening works in push/pull mode during business hours, which cuts wear on the device. Turn the key back and the bar releases to normal latching. On the 1000 Series, the CD-1000 kit is what converts a device from standard hex key dogging to key controlled dogging through a mortise cylinder.
3) Can I use this dogging kit on a fire rated exit device?
Dogging of any kind, hex key or cylinder, is not used on fire rated exit devices, because the latch has to stay projected to keep the door latched in a fire. The CD-1000 kit is a standard duty conversion part for 1000 Series devices on non-fire openings.
4) I want key control at a pair of doors - should I use the BEST KR822689 removable mullion or the Design Hardware CD-1000 dogging kit?
They solve different problems. The BEST Precision KR822689 is a key removable mullion, 2 inch by 3 inch by 8 feet in an aluminum finish, that mounts between a pair of doors and is taken out with a key to free the full opening. The Design Hardware CD-1000 cylinder dogging kit stays inside the exit device and lets the push bar be locked down with a key so the device runs in push/pull mode, which extends the life of the device. If you need to clear the opening for moving equipment through, the mullion is the part; if you want the leaf to stay push/pull during business hours, the CD-1000 is.
5) Can I key the CD-1000 dogging cylinder into my building master key system?
It depends which cylinder option you take. The included 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder is a 6 pin brass C keyway cylinder shipped with two keys, so a locksmith can rekey it to a C keyway system. If your facility is standardized on small format interchangeable core, take the 1-3/8 inch SFIC housing instead and drop in a core already keyed to your system.
6) What parts come in the Design Hardware CD-1000 cylinder dogging kit?
You get a new slide cover, the cylinder dogging assembly, the mortise cylinder, a cylinder collar, a back plate, and a cylinder retaining ring. That is everything on the device side of the conversion, so no separate trim or collar order is needed to finish the job.
7) Is the CD-1000 kit handed, and do I need to know the door swing before ordering?
