Design Hardware FS-1-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Design Hardware FS-1 floor stop mount on both concrete and wood floors?
Both. The FS-1 ships with two fastener sets: a 1/4 inch x 1-1/2 inch stud with a lead anchor for concrete or masonry, and a #12 x 1-3/8 inch flat head wood screw with a plastic anchor for wood subfloor or plywood. Pick the set that matches what is under the finish flooring, and remember the anchor has to seat below any carpet or tile thickness.
2) How tall is the FS-1 floor stop, and will it catch the door or hit below the bottom rail?
Overall height is 3-5/8 inches with a 2-1/2 inch diameter base. That puts the grey rubber bumper high enough to strike the face of a standard door rather than the undercut at the bottom. On a door with a deep bottom rail or a heavy sweep, measure from the finished floor to the point you want contact and compare it to that 3-5/8 inches before you drill.
3) Is a floor stop like the FS-1 the right choice, or should I use a wall stop instead?
A floor stop is what you want when the door swings into open space with no wall within reach of the door face, or where the wall is drywall that would not hold a bumper. The FS-1 is the tall dome type at 3-5/8 inches, so it stops the door on its face. Trade-off: it is a fixed obstruction in the walking path and it has to go through the finish floor. If there is a solid wall behind the door swing, a wall bumper keeps the floor clear.
4) What is the Design Hardware FS-1 floor stop made of, and will it hold up in a high traffic entry?
The base is solid cast brass, not a die-cast or stamped shell, with a grey rubber bumper taking the impact. Cast brass is the material you want where a stop gets kicked, vacuumed into, and struck repeatedly, such as apartment entries, office corridors, and hospitality corridors. The rubber bumper is the wear part and takes the abuse instead of the metal.
5) What finishes does the Design Hardware FS-1 floor stop come in, and will they match my existing lever and hinge finish?
Three finishes: 626 satin chrome, 613 dark bronze, and 606 satin brass. Those are BHMA finish numbers, so they are the same designations stamped on commercial levers, closers, and hinges, which makes matching across a building straightforward. If your doors are running 626 levers, order the 626 stop and the appearance lines up.
6) Do I need to buy anchors separately for the FS-1 floor stop?
No. Anchors come with it. Each FS-1 includes the 1/4 inch x 1-1/2 inch stud and lead anchor for concrete plus the #12 x 1-3/8 inch wood screw and plastic anchor for wood, so one part number covers either floor condition. You supply the drill and the correct bit for whichever anchor you use.
7) How much floor clearance does the FS-1 need, and how far from the door should it sit?
Plan for a 2-1/2 inch diameter footprint on the finished floor. Position it so the 3-5/8 inch dome contacts the door face at the point you want the swing to stop, which is normally set by how far the door needs to open rather than by the stop itself. Set it too close to the hinge side and you put leverage strain on the hinges, so keep it out toward the latch edge of the swing.
8) Will the FS-1 also hold a door open, or does it only stop it?
Stop only. The FS-1 is a dome floor stop with a rubber bumper: it limits the swing and protects the wall and door, but it has no hook or catch to retain the door in the open position. If you need the door to stay open, you want a floor stop with a holder or a separate hold-open device.
