Design Hardware SW-R-36-MF – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Design Hardware heavy duty rubber door sweep close a gap under my door?
The sweep insert stands 1-3/4 inches tall and is 1/4 inch thick, so it covers a gap up to roughly that height once mounted. Measure the daylight gap at the bottom of the door with the door closed. If the gap is bigger than the rubber can reach with the carrier mounted at the bottom edge, you need a door shoe or an automatic door bottom instead of a surface sweep.
2) What lengths does the Design Hardware rubber door sweep come in, and will one fit a 3-0 door?
Two lengths: 36 inches and 48 inches. A standard 3-0 door leaf is 36 inches wide, so the 36 inch sweep matches it edge to edge. For a 4-0 leaf, or for double doors where you want to cut down to width, take the 48 inch. Sweeps get cut to length on the job, so order the size at or above your door width and trim, never under.
3) What finishes does the Design Hardware heavy duty sweep come in, and can I get either length in either finish?
Dark Bronze and Mill Finish, and both lengths are offered in both. That is 36 inch Dark Bronze, 36 inch Mill, 48 inch Dark Bronze and 48 inch Mill. Mill is the bare aluminum look that disappears against an aluminum storefront frame; Dark Bronze matches bronze anodized frames and dark painted hollow metal.
4) Should I use a rubber door sweep or a brush sweep on an exterior door?
Rubber is the one to use where you want a real seal against wind driven rain, air and insects, and where the threshold is flat and even. The rubber insert here is heavy duty and 1/4 inch thick, so it wipes hard against the sill. Brush sweeps ride over uneven or grooved thresholds and over carpet more easily, and they are quieter in high traffic, but they leak air and water by comparison. Exterior openings and anything with a weather or energy concern get rubber.
5) Can I use the same door sweep on all the exterior doors across my property?
Yes, as long as they are flat bottom doors with a flat sill and the doors are 36 or 48 inches wide (or narrower, and you cut the 36 down). Buying one sweep in one finish across a building is how most property managers handle this: the rubber insert is the wear item, and standardizing means one part number on the shelf for every replacement. Doors with a raised or grooved threshold, or with a big out of square gap, will need a different bottom seal.
6) Is this a door sweep or a door shoe, and what is the difference?
This is a surface applied sweep: the carrier mounts to the face of the door near the bottom edge and the 1-3/4 inch rubber insert hangs down onto the sill. A door shoe is different hardware, it wraps the bottom edge of the door and usually needs the door pulled or undercut. Choose the sweep when you do not want to take the door down; choose a shoe when the bottom edge is chewed up or you need the seal held tighter to the sill.
7) Will a rubber door sweep drag on carpet or a raised threshold?
It can. The insert projects 1-3/4 inches below the carrier, so on an interior door swinging over carpet or over a threshold with a raised ridge, rubber that stiff will catch and either drag the door or tear itself up over time. Mount it high enough that it just kisses the floor when closed, or use a brush type sweep on those openings. On a flat exterior sill it is the right part.
