1) Will the Design Hardware 116 door closer fit my door if the top rail is narrow?
Depends on how you mount it. The 116 Series needs a minimum top rail of 3-1/8 inches for regular (pull side) mounting, 1-7/8 inches for top jamb, and 5-3/4 inches for parallel arm. If your top rail is short, top jamb mounting onto the frame face is the one that works. Screws and brackets for all three mounting styles ship in the box, so you can pick at the opening.
2) Can I use the Design Hardware 116 closer on a 3-hour fire rated door?
Yes. The 116 Series is UL Listed for "A" Label 3 hour fire doors and is UL10C positive pressure rated. Note it is a non-hold-open arm closer, which is what you want on a fire door since the door has to self-close and latch.
3) Does the Design Hardware 116 closer meet ADA opening force requirements?
It meets ADA requirements per ANSI A117.1 and carries ANSI A156.4 Grade 1. Spring power adjusts from size 1 through 6 and ships factory set at size 3, so on an interior accessible opening you can dial the power down to get the opening force where the code official wants it, then use the independent latch and sweep speed valves to still get positive latching.
4) Will the 116 Series drop into the holes from my old closer?
The 116 Series uses a 9-1/16 inch center-to-center horizontal hole pattern with 3/4 inch vertical offset. Measure the existing holes in the door or frame; if they match that pattern it mounts straight up. If they do not, a drop plate covers the old prep and gives you a fresh mounting surface. 5) Does the Design Hardware 116 door closer come with a cover?
No. The 116 Series includes a plastic pinion cap and the PA (parallel arm) bracket, but the molded plastic cover is sold separately. Budget for it if the closer is on a visible opening in a lobby or corridor. With the cover installed over the mounting plate the closer projects 2-1/4 inches off the door.

Note that hold open is generally not permitted on a rated fire door opening, which is where the non-hold-open 116 belongs.
8) My opening needs a slide track or flat arm closer - is the 116 Series the right choice?
No. The Design Hardware 116 Series comes with a tri-packed non-hold-open swing arm, not a track arm. For a track application, the Corbin Russwin DC5230 is a Grade 1 surface closer with slide track arm standard, pull side mounting, and the Dorma 8916-JT is a Grade 1 heavy duty jamb track closer, frame face mounting, pull side, adjustable size 1-6. The Dormakaba 8616 AF86P is a Grade 1 heavy duty flat arm non-hold-open tri-pack if you need the low-profile flat arm rather than a track.
9) For an aluminum storefront door, is the 116 Series appropriate or is there a better fit?
The Design Hardware 116 Series is a commercial heavy duty closer with a slim 2-1/4 inch projection over the mounting plate and a minimum top rail of 3-1/8 inch regular, 1-7/8 inch top jamb and 5-3/4 inch parallel arm, so the narrow rail of a storefront door is the thing to check first. The Norton Rixson 1600BC Series is a heavy duty Grade 1 aluminum storefront door closer with tri-style mounting and is purpose-built for that frame.
10) Can the 116 closer hold the door open, or do I need a different arm?
Not as supplied. The 116 ships tri-packed with a non-hold-open arm. Hold open arms are available as an accessory, along with heavy duty arms, extended arms and drop plates. Remember hold open is not permitted on a fire rated opening unless it releases on alarm.
11) How far will the Design Hardware 116 let the door swing open?
Up to 180 degrees, subject to what the wall and adjacent hardware allow. Back check intensity control is standard, so if someone throws the door open in a wind-loaded exterior opening the closer cushions the swing before the door slams into a wall or the arm takes the shock.
12) Is the Design Hardware 116 heavy enough for a high traffic entrance?
It is built for it. Heavy duty cast aluminum body with rack and pinion construction, heat treated steel piston, spindle and spring, and Grade 1 to ANSI A156.4. The valves are staked so they cannot be backed all the way out, which matters on tenant-occupied buildings where someone with a screwdriver decides to "fix" the closer and dumps the fluid.
13) Can I mount the 116 closer on the push side of the door?
Yes. The 116 mounts push side or pull side. Pull side is regular arm mounting; push side is either top jamb on the frame face or parallel arm on the door with the PA bracket, and that bracket is in the box. Parallel arm is the usual choice for a corridor where you do not want the closer projecting into traffic, but it needs 5-3/4 inches of top rail.
14) I am standardizing closers across a building. Can one part number cover doors of different widths?
That is the point of the adjustable spring. 20) Do the cast iron LCN closers do the same job as the Design Hardware 116?

22) Can I use a parallel-arm-only closer in place of the 116 Series?
Only if the opening is specifically a parallel arm push-side application. The Design Hardware 116 Series mounts push or pull side and brackets for all three mounting styles come in the carton. The Calibre CA8001P is a parallel arm size 1 ADA surface mount closer, and the Calibre CA5501 is a standard arm closer, so each is committed to one mounting approach rather than covering all three.
