Design Hardware PullP 3-1/2x15 US32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What sizes and finishes does the Design Hardware pull plate come in?
Two plate sizes: 3-1/2 x 15 inches and 4 x 16 inches. Each size is offered in three finishes, 613 dark bronze, 630 satin stainless steel, and 606 satin brass. The 3-1/2 x 15 is the common size on standard commercial flush doors; the 4 x 16 covers a little more of the door face and is often used to hide wear or old fastener holes.
2) How does the Design Hardware pull plate mount, and does it require through-bolting?
It mounts with 1/2 inch sheet metal screws, which are surface fasteners driven into the door face. No through-bolting is involved. If your spec calls for through-bolt mounting, that is a different build; the Ives 8302 heavy duty pull plate is a through bolt mounted option.
3) Do I need a push plate to go with this on the other side of the door?
Usually yes. A pull plate goes on the pull side, and on a non-latching or push-pull opening you pair it with a push plate on the swing side. This product is the pull plate only. For a matched pair in the same sizes, Delaney offers a 3-1/2 x 15 push plate and a 4 x 16 push plate.
4) We need a pull plate for a high-traffic entrance that takes abuse. What should we use instead of a .050 inch plate?
Design Hardware pull plates are .050 inch stainless steel, brass or bronze with 1/2 inch sheet metal screw fasteners. Where an entrance sees heavy abuse, the Ives 8302 is a heavy duty pull plate with through bolt mounting, which carries the pull load through the door rather than into screw threads in the face. The Ives 8303 is also heavy duty and is offered with 8 inch or 10 inch center-to-center mounting. Trimco's 1010 Series and 1012 Series cast pull plates are heavy duty as well, with 5 inch and 5.5 inch center-to-center pulls respectively.
5) What is the closest same-size alternative to a Design Hardware pull plate in 3-1/2 inch by 15 inch?
The Delaney 3-1/2" x 15" Door Pull Plate, DLY-4900xx, is built in the same 3-1/2 inch by 15 inch plate size that Design Hardware offers, so it covers the same footprint on the door face and leaves the same exposed area around an existing plate outline. For the larger opening, Delaney also builds the 4" x 16" Door Pull Plate, DLY-490xx0, matching the other Design Hardware plate size.
6) Is a push plate the same thing as a Design Hardware pull plate? We ordered the wrong one last time.
They are different parts and are not interchangeable. A Design Hardware pull plate carries a grip for the pull side of the door; a push plate is a flat plate with no handle, for the push side. Delaney builds both in matching sizes so a pair can be specified correctly: the DLY-4900xx is the 3-1/2" x 15" pull plate and DLY-4905xx is the 3-1/2" x 15" push plate, with DLY-490xx0 and DLY-490xxx as the 4" x 16" pull and push versions. If you want both halves supplied together, Emtek's Knoxville and Modern series are sold as push and pull plate sets.
7) How thick is this pull plate, and will it stand off the door much?
The plate stock is .050 inch, so it sits nearly flush against the door face. That thin a plate is the reason the fasteners are short 1/2 inch sheet metal screws. If you want a heavier cast plate with more presence, the Trimco 1010 Series cast pull plate is a heavy duty alternative.
8) What material is the Design Hardware pull plate made of?
Stainless steel, brass, or bronze, matched to the finish you pick. The 630 satin stainless is the usual choice for high-traffic and wet or coastal openings; 606 satin brass and 613 dark bronze are the decorative finishes.
9) I'm replacing pull plates across a building. Will the Design Hardware plate cover the old screw holes?
It depends on the plate you are pulling off. Both sizes offered, 3-1/2 x 15 and 4 x 16, are the two standard commercial plate footprints, so a like-for-like swap normally lands on the same face area. Going up from 3-1/2 x 15 to 4 x 16 gives you extra margin to cover old holes. The screws are 1/2 inch sheet metal screws, so new pilot holes in the door face are easy to set where the old ones do not line up.
10) Is there a direct equivalent to the Design Hardware pull plate in the same sizes from another brand?
Delaney's pull plates match both footprints: a 3-1/2 x 15 inch door pull plate and a 4 x 16 inch door pull plate. Those are the straight size-for-size alternatives if you need to fill out an order or match an existing Delaney set already on the building.
11) Can I use a Design Hardware pull plate on the pull side of a door with an exit device?
A Design Hardware pull plate is a general purpose plate fastened with 1/2 inch sheet metal screws and is not built around a specific exit device. If the opening has a Detex Value Series exit device, the Detex P/PN Series pull plate is the pull plate made for that device, so the trim lines up with the device it is paired to rather than being mounted independently.
12) Our architect wants a decorative pull plate rather than a plain commercial one. What are the options?
Design Hardware pull plates are plain commercial plates in stainless steel, brass or bronze, finished 613 dark bronze, 630 satin stainless steel or 606 satin brass. For a decorative treatment, Emtek's Petal push and pull plates are lost wax cast bronze, and the Emtek Knoxville and Modern series offer alternative styling in matching push and pull sets. On the commercial side, Trimco's 1013 Series is a round pull plate with a 5.5 inch center-to-center pull and the 1014 Series is a half-round pull plate with a 6 inch center-to-center pull, if the request is for a shaped profile rather than an ornamental casting.
13) What pull plate should I specify if the door already has through-bolt holes from the old hardware?
Design Hardware pull plates ship with 1/2 inch sheet metal screws, which is a face-fastened attachment. If the door is already drilled for through bolts, the Ives 8302 is a heavy duty pull plate with through bolt mounting and will use that existing prep. The Ives 8303 is a heavy duty plate offered with 8 inch or 10 inch center-to-center mounting, which is worth checking against the hole spacing you already have.
14) Which cast pull plates come in different grip center-to-center dimensions?
Among cast commercial plates, the Trimco 1010 Series has a 5 inch center-to-center pull, the 1012 Series is a cast tapered heavy duty plate with a 5.5 inch center-to-center pull, the 1013 Series is round with a 5.5 inch center-to-center pull, and the 1014 Series is half-round with a 6 inch center-to-center pull. Matching the center-to-center to the grip your tenants are used to matters most when you are standardizing plates across a building.
