1) What is the minimum top rail I need for a Design Hardware 316R door closer?
It depends on which mounting you use. Regular arm mounting needs a 3-1/8 inch top rail, top jamb needs 1-7/8 inches, and parallel arm needs 5-3/4 inches. If your door has a narrow top rail, top jamb mounting on the frame face is usually the way in. 2) Can I mount the Design Hardware 316 Series closer on the push side of the door?
Yes. The 316 closer mounts push or pull side. Pull side is regular arm mounting, push side is either top jamb (on the frame face) or parallel arm (on the underside of the frame soffit). All three brackets are in the box. Watch the top rail: parallel arm needs 5-3/4 inches, top jamb only 1-7/8.
3) How do I set the closing force on a Design Hardware 316 closer for an exterior door versus an interior office door?
Spring power adjusts from size 1 to 6 and leaves the factory set at size 3. Turn it up for a heavy exterior door fighting wind or stack pressure, and back it down for a light interior door or an ADA opening where opening force is limited. Latch speed and sweep speed adjust independently, and back check intensity is standard, so you can slow the door before it slams into a wall stop. The valves are staked so they cannot be backed all the way out.
4) Does the Design Hardware 316 door closer meet ADA and ANSI Grade 1?

7) I have an aluminum storefront door with a narrow top rail. Will the Design Hardware 316 fit, or do I need something else?
Possibly, but the mounting decides it. Regular arm needs a 3-1/8 inch top rail and parallel arm needs 5-3/4 inches, which most narrow stile storefront doors do not have. Top jamb mounting only needs 1-7/8 inches and puts the body on the frame face, which is the usual answer on storefront. 8) Can I use a Design Hardware 316R on a 3 hour fire rated door, and what else carries that duty rating?
The 316R is UL listed for A label 3 hour fire doors and UL10C positive pressure rated, and it is a non-hold open closer, which is what a fire door opening requires. Other Grade 1 heavy duty non-hold open closers for the same kind of opening include the Dormakaba 8616 AF86P FC SNB1 689 with a flat non-hold open tri-pack arm and the Dorma 8916-JT with a flat non-hold open arm in the 8900 Series. Avoid hold open arm models such as the Accentra 51 Series on a fire rated opening unless the hold open is fire release rated.

Duty and spring range. The 316 is rated medium to heavy duty with a cast aluminum body, rack and pinion, and heat treated steel piston, spindle and spring, adjustable size 1 through 6. The Arrow DCN314 and DC314 are light duty, and the DCN314 adjusts only size 1 to 4, which tops out below what a wide or heavy exterior door needs. For a light duty tri-pack with the full 1 to 6 range, the Arrow DCN325 sits in between.
17) Can I use the Design Hardware 316 on a hollow metal door and on a wood door?
Both. The fastener pack covers it: machine screws and thru bolts for hollow metal, wood screws for wood doors, plus self-tapping machine screws. On a hollow metal door with no reinforcement at the closer location, use the thru bolts rather than the self-tappers.
18) The frame stop is too shallow for the parallel arm bracket. What do I add?
A drop plate. Design Hardware lists drop plates as a 316 accessory, along with heavy duty arms and extended arms, and a drop plate is the standard fix when the mounting surface is too narrow or the stop too shallow to land the closer or bracket. Order it as a separate line, it is not in the box with the closer.
19) I need one Grade 1 tri-mount closer to standardize across a whole building. What are my options besides the Design Hardware 316?
