Detex F30 LD 628 90 48 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Detex 30 Advantex 48 inch exit device work on a wood door?
No. The Detex 30 Advantex is not rated for wood door applications, so on a wood fire door you need a device the manufacturer lists as wood door compatible. It is built for commercial metal and aluminum openings with a wide stile.
2) Is the Detex 30 Series mortise exit device fire rated and what grade is it?
Fire rated, and Grade 1 with a super-heavy-duty rating. That combination is what most institutional and healthcare specs call for on a rated egress opening. Note that being fire rated means the device has no mechanical dogging, which is why it is supplied less dogging.
3) My door is 42 inches wide. Can I use the 48 inch Detex 30 Advantex or do I need a shorter device?
The 48 inch size covers door widths up to 48 inches, and the 30 Series is field sizeable, so a 48 inch device can be cut down on the job to suit a narrower opening. If you want a factory-correct fit with no field work, order the device size that matches your door width.
4) Do I have to specify handing on the Detex 30 Advantex mortise device?
Yes. The chassis is non-handed, but because this is the mortise lock version you select the hand when ordering: right hand reverse or left hand reverse. Those are the two options offered, which are the standard hands for an outswinging exit door.
5) What outside trim options can I get with the Detex 30 Advantex 48 inch exit device?
Four choices: exit only with no outside trim, 01CM blank plate, 03CM night latch trim (key retracts the latch for entry), 08DMS classroom lever trim, or 09DMS storeroom lever trim. Storeroom keeps the lever rigid until a key is used; classroom lets a key unlock the lever for free passage. Outside trim can be changed or re-keyed later without pulling the device off the door.
6) Will this Detex device latch into the strike I already have from another manufacturer's exit device?
The 30 Advantex is built for easy retrofit to other manufacturers' systems, and it uses a stainless steel latch bolt with 3/4 inch projection, anti-friction and deadlocking. Detex supplies a mounting plate and strike locator instead of a paper template, so the strike gets set to the device rather than the other way around. Plan on installing the supplied strike.
7) What is the closest fire rated alternative to the Detex 30 Advantex 48 inch exit device for a 48 inch by 84 inch opening?
The Marks USA MARM9900F-VR is a fire rated vertical rod panic exit device sized 48 inch by 84 inch in an exit only configuration. The Detex 30 Advantex is also fire rated and built at 48 inch width, with Grade 1 super-heavy-duty construction and wide stile design, and it can be ordered exit only or with 01CM blank plate, 03CM night latch, 08DMS classroom lever or 09DMS storeroom lever outside trim.
8) I need a fire rated vertical rod device for a 36 inch door instead of a 48 inch one - what are my options?
The Detex 30 Advantex covered here is built for 48 inch width. For a 36 inch by 84 inch fire rated opening, the Marks USA M9900FVR is a fire rated vertical rod exit device in exit only, non-handed form, and the Delaney F9100 Series DLY-694300 is a Grade 1 fire rated heavy duty vertical rod device for a 36 inch by 84 inch door in an aluminum finish.
9) Which alternatives look like substitutes for a fire rated Detex 30 device but are not labeled?
Several vertical rod devices carry a Fire Rating spec of No and cannot take the place of the fire rated Detex 30 Advantex on a labeled opening: the Delaney 9100 Series DLY-692301 Grade 1 heavy duty device, the Delaney 8100 Series DLY-8100-3684 Grade 1 device, and the Imperial USA ED-VR531 Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device. All three are built for 36 inch doors as well, while the Detex 30 covered here is a 48 inch device.
10) Can I get the Detex 30 exit device with delayed egress or electric latch retraction?
Yes, the electrified option is selected at order: none, EA hardwired electric alarm, EX request to exit switch, EE delayed egress, or ER EX electric latch retraction with request to exit. Delayed egress and latch retraction both need power run to the door, so plan for a transfer hinge or power transfer and a power supply on the job.
11) Is the Detex 30 Advantex suitable for an exterior door exposed to weather?
Not as a weatherized device. The 30 Advantex is not a weatherized configuration, so for a door taking direct rain, wind-driven moisture, or coastal exposure you want hardware specifically built for that duty. It is intended for high-use, high-abuse commercial openings.
12) I don't need a fire rating. Is there a cheaper vertical rod device instead of the Detex 30?
For a non-rated opening, the Von Duprin 8827-3FT is a Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device for 1-3/4 inch doors in a 3 foot size, and the Cal-Royal 9860 is a Grade 2 heavy duty exit only surface vertical rod. Both are non-fire-rated, so neither can go on a labeled fire door. Imperial USA's ED-VR531 is another Grade 1 wide stile non-rated option at 36 inches.
13) What is a lighter duty vertical rod exit device than the Detex 30 Advantex?
The Cal-Royal 9860 is a heavy duty Grade 2 surface vertical rod exit device in exit only function with ADA compliance and a Fire Rating spec of No. The Detex 30 Advantex is Grade 1 and rated super-heavy-duty, so the Cal-Royal sits a grade below and is not a fire rated option.
14) What finishes does the Detex 30 Advantex come in for matching other hardware in the building?
Eight finishes: 605 polished brass, 606 brushed brass, 611 polished bronze, 612 brushed bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 628 brushed aluminum, 630 brushed stainless steel, and 693 black painted. Detex applies PVD finishing over stainless steel, which holds up better than plating on high-touch push bars.
15) Does the Detex 30 Advantex come with installation templates?
Detex ships a patented mounting plate and strike locator system in place of paper templates, which is what makes the layout fast and repeatable across a run of doors. Printed installation instructions are published by Detex as document 104883, and door prep templates for the Advantex 30 Series are available from Detex support.
