Detex 87-693-36x84 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Detex 87 Advantex exit device work on a pair of doors without a mullion?
Yes. The 87 Advantex is a concealed vertical rod device built for hollow metal doors without mullions, so it latches at the head and the threshold rather than into a center post. That is what lets it secure a pair of doors where a removable mullion is not wanted. A rim device, by contrast, would need a mullion on a pair.
2) Is the Detex 87 exit device handed, and can I reverse it in the field?
It is a handed device, but field reversible, so one unit covers either hand without swapping hardware. On the order form you still pick the hand: Right Hand Reverse or Left Hand Reverse. Those are the two handings that apply, because a panic device sits on the push side of an outswinging door.
3) Does the Detex 87 fit an aluminum storefront door?
No. The 87 Advantex is a wide stile device specified for hollow metal doors. Narrow aluminum storefront stiles will not take it. For a glass front opening you want a narrow stile device instead.
4) Can I get the Detex 87 for a fire rated opening?
Yes. Rating is an order option: Fire Rated, Non-Rated, or Tornado Rated. Pick Fire Rated for a labeled opening. Note that dogging is not used on fire doors, so a fire rated unit should be ordered less dogging.
5) Can the Detex 87 send a request-to-exit signal or alarm when the door is used?
Yes, through the electrified option chosen at order: EA hardwired electric alarm, EB electric alarm with battery, EX request to exit signal switch, or EE delayed egress. EX is the one to pick when the access control panel needs a REX input to shunt the alarm; EB suits an emergency exit door with no power run to it; EE is for a delayed egress opening.
6) Does the Detex 87 come with outside trim, or is it exit only?
Exit only with a cover plate, meaning no outside lever or pull is included and no outside entry function is provided. If you need to get back in from the outside, this configuration will not do it, and you should plan separate trim or a different function.
7) How is a concealed vertical rod device different from a surface vertical rod like the Von Duprin 8827?
Both latch top and bottom on a pair without a mullion. The Detex 87 runs its rods inside the door, so nothing is exposed to be kicked, pried, or collect grime, but the door has to be prepped for it. The Von Duprin 8827-3FT is a wide stile surface vertical rod, Grade 1, for 1-3/4 inch doors, with the rods on the face of the door, which makes it the easier retrofit onto an existing leaf that was never prepped for concealed rods.
8) What is the closest Grade 1 wide stile vertical rod alternative to the Detex 87 Advantex if the door cannot be prepped for concealed rods?
The Detex 87 Advantex is a concealed vertical rod device for wide stile hollow metal doors, which requires the rods to run inside the door. When the door cannot take that prep, the Von Duprin 8827-3FT is a wide stile surface vertical rod device, Grade 1, in a 3 ft size for 1-3/4 inch doors, with the rods and latches mounted on the door face instead. Both carry a Grade 1 rating; the difference is entirely where the rods live and what the door must be prepared for.
9) Which vertical rod exit device should I use on a fire rated opening instead of specifying the Detex 87?
The Detex 87 Advantex is offered in a fire rated configuration alongside non-rated and tornado rated versions, so it can be specified directly for a fire door. If a different make is needed for the same fire rated vertical rod application, the Delaney F9100 Series device for a 36 by 84 inch door is Grade 1 and fire rated in an aluminum finish, and the Marks USA M9900FVR covers 36 by 84 inch fire rated exit only openings with the M9900F-VR handling 48 by 84 inch. Note the Detex 87 runs concealed rods while those alternatives are separate devices with their own door prep requirements.
10) Is the Cal-Royal 9860 an equivalent substitute for a Detex 87 Advantex?
No. The Cal-Royal 9860 is a heavy duty surface vertical rod exit only device rated Grade 2 and not fire rated. The Detex 87 Advantex is a Grade 1 concealed vertical rod device available in fire rated, non-rated, and tornado rated builds. If a job or spec calls for Grade 1 or a fire rated opening, the 9860 will not meet it.
11) What dogging choices do I have to pick when ordering the Detex 87?
Three: hex dogging, cylinder dogging, or less/no dogging. Hex key dogging is the low cost way to hold the pushbar down during business hours. Cylinder dogging lets staff dog and undog with a key instead of a hex wrench, which is what most schools and offices standardize on. Order less dogging on any fire rated leaf.
12) Is the Detex 87 exit device Grade 1?
Yes, BHMA Grade 1, which is the highest of the three BHMA grades and the level normally specified for high traffic commercial and institutional openings. Construction is heavy duty steel with patented deadlocking top and bottom bolt assemblies.
13) Will the Detex 87 relatch reliably on a door that slams or gets abused?
The top latch uses a 6 position multi-step action that keeps the bolts retracted until the door is fully closed, then throws them. That is aimed at consistent relatching on high abuse openings, and the bottom drop bolt is steel. It is the reason this device gets used on warehouse, school, and multi-tenant exits rather than a light duty unit.
14) What else does ZenSupply carry if I need a vertical rod exit device but not a concealed rod one?
Several surface vertical rod options. The Imperial USA ED-VR531 is a Grade 1 wide stile 36 inch exit only device. Delaney's 9100 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty vertical rod for a 36 x 84 door in stainless, and the F9100 Series is the fire rated version of it. Marks USA M9900VR covers 36 x 84 and 48 x 84 exit only and is non-handed, with M9900FVR as the fire rated counterpart. If Grade 2 is acceptable, the Cal-Royal 9860 is a heavy duty non-fire-rated surface vertical rod.
15) How do I prep the door correctly for the Detex 87 concealed rods?
Use the factory templates and the patented mounting plate that comes with the device; Detex publishes door prep templates and installation instructions for the Advantex 87, and the mounting plate is what sets the hole locations. Concealed rod work is prep-critical, so template the leaf before drilling, then adjust the top latch and bottom bolt for alignment once it hangs.
16) The Detex 87 requires choosing a handing - is there a non-handed vertical rod device I can stock instead?
The Detex 87 Advantex is ordered by handing, right hand reverse or left hand reverse, and is field reversible. If you would rather stock one part that fits either swing, the Marks USA M9900VR is a non-handed vertical rod panic device, exit only, in 36 by 84 inch, with a 48 by 84 inch version also offered, and the fire rated M9900FVR at 36 by 84 inch is likewise non-handed. Those are surface rod devices rather than concealed, so the door prep differs from the 87.
17) I need a simpler non-rated Grade 1 vertical rod device for a 36 by 84 inch door - what are the options besides the Detex 87?
The Detex 87 Advantex in non-rated form covers 36 inch and 48 inch device sizes for 84, 96, and 120 inch door heights, with dogging and electrified options such as delayed egress and request to exit. For a plainer mechanical device on a standard 36 by 84 opening, the Delaney 8100 Series and the Delaney 9100 Series are both Grade 1 non-rated vertical rod devices sized for that door, the 9100 in stainless steel finish, and the Imperial USA ED-VR531 is a Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device at 36 inches, exit only.
18) Which vertical rod devices cover a 48 inch wide leaf if I am not using the Detex 87?
The Detex 87 Advantex is offered in a 48 inch device size across its finish range including 630 brushed stainless steel and 613 oil rubbed bronze. For 48 inch openings from other makers, the Marks USA M9900VR is offered as a 48 by 84 inch non-rated exit only device and the M9900F-VR as a 48 by 84 inch fire rated version. The Delaney and Imperial vertical rod devices are cataloged for 36 by 84 inch doors, so they do not cover the wider leaf.
19) What finishes does the Detex 87 come in to match the rest of my doors?
Nine: 605 polished brass, 606 brushed brass, 611 polished bronze, 612 brushed bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 polished stainless, 630 brushed stainless, 693 black painted, and 695 dark bronze painted. 630 brushed stainless and 695 dark bronze are the usual choices when matching existing commercial hardware across a building.
