Detex 8701CV-693-36x84 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Detex 8701CV work on a pair of doors without a center mullion?
Yes. The Advantex 8701CV is a concealed vertical rod device, so it latches at the head and the threshold rather than into a strike on the frame edge. That is how it secures hollow metal doors without mullions, which is exactly what Detex specifies it for. If your opening already has a removable mullion, a rim device would be the simpler choice.
2) What door widths and heights does the Detex 87 Series concealed vertical rod device cover?
Device sizes are 36 inch and 48 inch, and door heights are covered at 84 inch, 96 inch and 120 inch. The rods are field sizeable and adjustable once installed in the door, so you order to the nearest height listed and trim in the field.
3) Does the 8701CV fit narrow stile aluminum storefront doors?
No. It is a wide stile device built for hollow metal doors. On a narrow stile aluminum and glass entrance you need a narrow stile exit device instead, since the wide stile chassis and mounting plate will not fit the stile face.
4) Do I have to specify handing on the Detex 8701CV, and can it be changed in the field?
You pick Right Hand Reverse or Left Hand Reverse when ordering. The device is handed but field reversible, so if the wrong hand shows up on site it can be converted rather than returned.
5) Can I get the Detex 87 Series concealed vertical rod device fire rated or tornado rated?
Three build options are offered: Fire Rated, Non-Rated and Tornado Rated. Pick the rating to match the opening, because a fire door assembly will not accept a non-rated device and a storm shelter opening needs the tornado rated build. Note that fire rated exit devices cannot be dogged, so specify the less/no dogging option on those openings.
6) What dogging choices are there on the Detex 8701CV?
Hex dogging, cylinder dogging, or less/no dogging. Hex dogging is the standard 1/8 turn hex key hold-down for keeping the door push-pull during business hours. Cylinder dogging locks that function behind a keyed cylinder so only keyholders can dog the device down, which is the usual choice in schools and multi-tenant buildings. Less/no dogging is what you order on fire rated openings.
7) What does "exit only" mean on the Detex 8701CV, and can I add outside trim later?
Exit only with a cover plate means there is no outside trim, no lever and no key access from the exterior. The cover plate closes off the trim prep on the outside face. Detex does allow outside trims to be changed or rekeyed without pulling the device off the door, but if you need re-entry from outside you should order a device configured for trim rather than the exit only cover plate version.
8) Concealed vertical rod or surface vertical rod, which should I use?
Concealed rods, as on the Detex 8701CV, run inside the door, so nothing is exposed to be kicked, grabbed or vandalized, but the door has to be prepped for them and you generally specify concealed at the door order. Surface vertical rod devices mount on the face of an existing door, which makes them the retrofit answer when the door was never prepped internally. Surface options include the Von Duprin 8827-3FT wide stile Grade 1 device for 1-3/4 inch doors and the Imperial USA ED-VR531 wide stile Grade 1.
9) Is there a Grade 1 fire rated vertical rod exit device equivalent to the Detex 8701CV for a 36 x 84 opening?
The Detex Advantex 8701CV is offered in a fire rated configuration as well as non-rated and tornado rated, in 36 inch and 48 inch device sizes. For a fire rated 36 x 84 alternative, the Delaney F9100 Series (DLY-694300) is a Grade 1 fire rated heavy duty vertical rod device for a 36 x 84 door in aluminum finish, and the Marks USA M9900FVR is a fire rated vertical rod exit device, exit only, for 36 x 84 and is non-handed.
10) Is the Cal-Royal 9860 a substitute for the Detex Advantex 8701CV?
They are not interchangeable on a Grade 1 specification. The Detex Advantex 8701CV is a BHMA Grade 1 concealed vertical rod device for commercial use. The Cal-Royal 9860 is a heavy duty surface vertical rod exit device, exit only, rated Grade 2 and not fire rated. If the drawing calls for Grade 1 or a fire rated opening, the 9860 will not satisfy it; for a non-rated opening where Grade 2 is acceptable it is a surface-rod option.
11) Do any of the comparable vertical rod exit devices offer electrified options like the Detex 8701CV?
The Detex Advantex 8701CV can be ordered with a hardwired electric alarm, request to exit signal switch, delayed egress, or electric alarm with battery, plus hex or cylinder dogging. The comparable Grade 1 vertical rod devices from Von Duprin, Delaney, Imperial USA and Marks USA are catalogued as mechanical exit only devices, so if alarm or delayed egress function is part of the opening, stay with the 8701CV configuration rather than substituting.
12) For a tornado rated opening, can I use the Von Duprin 8827 or a Marks USA M9900VR instead of the Detex 8701CV?
No. The Detex Advantex 8701CV is offered in a tornado rated configuration alongside fire rated and non-rated. The Von Duprin 8827-3FT is a Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device with no fire rating listed, and the Marks USA M9900VR is an exit only vertical rod device with no fire rating; neither is offered as a tornado rated assembly. For storm shelter openings, order the tornado rated 8701CV configuration.
13) What electrified options can I order with the Detex Advantex 87 Series device?
Four, plus a plain mechanical build. EA is a hardwired electric alarm, EB is an electric alarm with battery, EX is a request to exit signal switch for tying into access control or an alarm panel, and EE is delayed egress. Delayed egress is the one to specify when you need a timed hold on the door for loss prevention or patient wandering, and it is subject to local code approval.
14) Is the Detex 87 Series device rated for high traffic exits like schools and hospitals?
It is a BHMA Grade 1 commercial device, the top durability class, built with a steel bottom drop bolt for high-use, high-abuse openings. Detex lists it for office buildings, schools, healthcare, retail, industrial, multi-tenant residential and government facilities.
15) How reliable is re-latching on the Detex 87 Series top latch?
The top latch uses a patented 6-position multi-step action that holds the bolts retracted until the door is actually closed, so the bolts are not dragging on the frame or bouncing off the strike. Top and bottom bolt assemblies then deadlock, which is the patented feature that resists someone prying or pulling the door apart at the head. The top strike adjusts vertically and for weatherstrip thickness, so you can dial in latching on a door with a seal.
16) The Detex 8701CV has to be ordered handed. What vertical rod exit device avoids handing at the time of order?
The Detex Advantex 8701CV is ordered as right hand reverse or left hand reverse, though the device itself is field reversible. If you would rather not make the handing call on the purchase order, the Marks USA M9900VR is a non-handed vertical rod panic exit device, exit only, in 36 x 84, and the fire rated M9900FVR is also non-handed in 36 x 84.
17) I need a 48 inch vertical rod exit device. What are my options besides the Detex 8701CV?
The Detex Advantex 8701CV is available in a 48 inch device size as well as 36 inch. For other 48 inch options, the Marks USA M9900VR-48X84 is a vertical rod panic exit device, exit only, for a 48 x 84 opening and is not fire rated, and the Marks USA MARM9900F-VR is the fire rated 48 x 84 version, exit only.
18) What finishes does the Detex Advantex 8701CV come in to match existing hardware in a building?
Nine finishes: 605 polished brass, 606 brushed brass, 611 polished bronze, 612 brushed bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 polished stainless, 630 brushed stainless, 693 black painted and 695 dark bronze painted. For matching a fleet of existing openings, 630 brushed stainless and 695 dark bronze are the usual commercial standards.
19) Are door prep templates and install instructions available for the Detex 8701CV?
Yes. Detex publishes installation instructions and the 87 Series catalog page for this device, and the patented mounting plate system is designed to hold the layout accurately with minimal door prep. Pull the template before you drill, especially on a 96 or 120 inch door where rod length matters.
