1) What is the Detex RC65 rim cylinder used for?
The RC65 is a replacement rim cylinder for Detex exit devices, giving you keyed access from the outside of the opening. It is a keyed cylinder component only, not a complete exit device, so it goes into an existing device that is already prepped for a rim cylinder.
2) Does the Detex RC65 come in a Schlage C keyway?
Schlage C is the only keyway offered on the RC65. That is the most common commercial keyway in North America, so if your building already keys Schlage C, this cylinder can be keyed into the existing master key system by your locksmith.
3) Will the RC65 cylinder work on a vertical rod exit device?
Yes. The RC65 is intended for vertical rod exit device systems and related Detex door hardware where a keyed rim cylinder provides the outside key override. Confirm your device is prepped for a rim cylinder rather than a mortise cylinder before ordering.
4) Is the RC65 a rim cylinder or a mortise cylinder?
It is a rim cylinder. Rim cylinders mount through the door from the inside with a tailpiece driving the device, and they are not interchangeable with threaded mortise cylinders. If your exit device trim takes a threaded mortise cylinder, this is not the part.
5) The exit device on my fire door needs a key cylinder - is the RC65 the part, or do I need a fire rated device?
If the existing device is sound and only the keyed cylinder has failed, the Detex RC65 rim cylinder is the component-level fix; it is a replacement part that provides key override on an exit device. If the device itself is being replaced on a fire rated opening, the cylinder alone will not satisfy that - a fire rated device such as the Marks USA M9900FVR for a 36 by 84 door, the Marks USA MARM9900F-VR for a 48 by 84 door, or the Delaney F9100 Series Grade 1 fire rated vertical rod device for a 36 by 84 door carries the fire rating. Note that the Cal-Royal 9860, Delaney 9100 and 8100 Series, Imperial USA ED-VR531 and Von Duprin 8827-3FT are all listed as not fire rated.
6) Can a Cal-Royal 9860 or Von Duprin 8827-3FT be ordered instead of the Detex RC65?
No - they are not the same class of part. The Detex RC65 is a rim cylinder, a keyed replacement component with a Schlage C keyway that mounts to an existing exit device to give key access. The Cal-Royal 9860 is a complete surface vertical rod exit device, Grade 2, heavy duty, exit only, and the Von Duprin 8827-3FT is a complete 88 Series wide stile surface vertical rod device, Grade 1, for 1-3/4 inch doors in a 3 ft width. Those two replace the whole push bar and rod assembly on the door; the RC65 replaces only the cylinder that goes into one.
7) Do I need this cylinder if I am ordering a new exit device?
Not necessarily. Exit-only devices have no outside key function and take no cylinder. Several vertical rod devices we carry are exit only, including the Cal-Royal 9860, the Imperial USA ED-VR531, and the Marks USA M9900VR. You only need a rim cylinder like the RC65 when the device has keyed outside trim or key dogging.
8) Can I use the RC65 to key my exit devices alike across a building?
Yes, if the building is on Schlage C. Because the RC65 uses the Schlage C keyway, a locksmith can key it alike or key it into an existing Schlage C master system, so one key can run multiple openings. Keying is done at the cylinder, not the device, so mixed brands of exit device can still share a key as long as each takes a rim cylinder.
9) We are standardizing keying across a building - does buying a new vertical rod device cover the cylinder too?
The keyed cylinder is the piece that carries the keyway, and the Detex RC65 is supplied in Schlage C so it can be brought into an existing master key system. Complete devices in the vertical rod class are commonly specified as exit only - the Cal-Royal 9860, Imperial USA ED-VR531, Marks USA M9900VR in 36 by 84 and 48 by 84, and the Marks USA M9900FVR are all listed as exit only function, meaning no outside key trim in that configuration. For openings that need key access from the outside, plan the cylinder as a separate line item rather than assuming it comes with the device.
10) What should I order if the vertical rod device itself is worn out rather than just the cylinder?
The Detex RC65 addresses the cylinder only. For a full device replacement on a 36 by 84 opening, comparable surface vertical rod devices include the Delaney 8100 Series and 9100 Series, both Grade 1, the Imperial USA ED-VR531 in the ED-500 Series, Grade 1 wide stile, and the Von Duprin 8827-3FT, Grade 1 wide stile for 1-3/4 inch doors. For a 48 inch door the Marks USA M9900VR is offered in a 48 by 84 size. Confirm door width, stile type, and whether the opening is fire rated before selecting.
11) Is the RC65 a genuine Detex part?
