Detex SIFV-EX-CD-36IN – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Detex SIFV-EX-CD filler kit actually do on an exit device?
It's a slide-in filler that drops into the exit device housing and adds two functions at once: cylinder dogging, so an authorized user can hold the pushbar retracted with a cylinder, and a request-to-exit (REX) switch that signals door activity to an access control system. One part covers both the mechanical hold-open and the electrified egress signal, which is why it gets used on service calls where a door needs both added.
2) Do I order the Detex slide-in filler kit by door width or by device length?
By device length, not door width. The Detex SIFV-EX-CD kit is offered for 36 inch and 48 inch devices, so measure the exit device already on the door rather than the opening. Devices are commonly sized down for narrower openings, so a 36 inch door does not automatically take the 36 inch kit.
3) Will this Detex filler kit fit a Von Duprin or Precision exit device?
No. The SIFV-EX-CD is a Detex Value Series component made to slide into compatible Detex exit device housings. It is not a cross-brand retrofit, so a Von Duprin, Precision or Yale device needs that maker's own dogging and REX parts.
4) Can I use a dogged exit device on a fire door?
Mechanical or cylinder dogging is not permitted on fire rated openings, which must latch every time. Use the SIFV-EX-CD kit on non-rated doors where you want the pushbar held retracted during business hours. On a rated opening, specify a device without dogging or an electric latch retraction arrangement approved for fire doors.
5) Is a cylinder included with the Detex cylinder dogging filler kit?
The kit provides the cylinder dogging mechanism, which operates with a standard cylinder. Plan on supplying the mortise dogging cylinder separately, keyed into your building's keyway so the maintenance crew can dog the doors open with the same key they already carry.
6) What is the REX switch in this kit used for in an access control system?
The built-in request-to-exit switch tells the access panel that someone is leaving through the door, so the controller can shunt the door contact and avoid logging a forced-door alarm on a legitimate exit. It also gives you egress monitoring on the door without adding a separate switch in the frame. You still run low voltage wiring to the device, typically through a door loop or electric hinge transfer.
7) Is this a repair part or a complete exit device?
Repair and upgrade part only. The SIFV-EX-CD is classified as a replacement exit device part, so it goes into an exit device you already have on the door. If the door has no exit device yet, you need a complete Detex Value Series device, and this kit only comes into play for the dogging and REX functions.
8) Is the Detex SIFV-EX-CD kit suitable for a school or hospital corridor door?
It's a commercial-grade part, catalogued for commercial rather than residential use, and Detex lists it for office buildings, schools, healthcare, retail, industrial, multi-tenant residential and government facilities. For a facility standardizing hardware, the appeal is that one kit adds both dogging and REX across the same device length, so stockroom parts stay consistent.
