Detex V5003PNxNS-628-36x84 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Detex V50xNS vertical rod exit device work on a pair of aluminum storefront doors with no mullion?
That's exactly what the V5003PNxNS/V5103PNxNS is built for. It's a narrow stile surface vertical rod device, so it latches at the head and at the threshold rather than into a center mullion, which lets you secure a pair of double doors with no mullion between them. Narrow stile construction is what makes it suitable for aluminum storefront and glass front openings where a wide stile rim device won't fit the stile face.
2) What does the Key Retracts Latch function on the Detex V5003PNxNS actually do from outside the door?
Outside, you get a pull trim with a cylinder. Turning the key retracts the latch so you can pull the door open; it does not leave the door in a free state, so once you release the key the latch returns. Inside, the push rail always allows free egress. If you need dogging so the doors stay push-pull during business hours, order the hex dogging or cylinder dogging option instead of less/no dogging.
3) Can I get the Detex Value Series narrow stile vertical rod device fire rated?
Both are offered. The V50xNS/V51xNS narrow stile vertical rod device is ordered as either Fire Rated or Non-Rated. Pick fire rated for an opening in a rated assembly, and note that fire rated exit devices cannot be dogged, so specify less/no dogging on those doors. Non-rated openings are where hex or cylinder dogging makes sense.
4) Will the 3/4 inch top latch bolt on the Detex V50 series latch into my existing storefront header strike?
The top bolt is a stainless steel 3/4 inch deadlocking latch bolt, and the bottom is a 5/8 inch diameter by 5-5/8 inch long drop bolt. Existing strikes rarely line up, which is why the device is ordered with its strike package: 96 gives a surface non-roller top strike with a non-dust proof bottom strike, and 96B swaps in a dust proof bottom strike. The patented mounting plate and strike locator sets the strike positions during install rather than relying on a paper template.
5) Should I order the top and bottom rod device or the top rod only version?
Top and bottom rod gives you two-point latching, head and threshold, which is the stronger choice for exterior pairs and for security. Top rod only (less bottom rod) removes the floor strike and drop bolt, so nothing protrudes at the sill, which people choose where the floor is uneven, where a dust proof strike keeps clogging, or to avoid a trip hazard in high traffic. Both are orderable on the V50xNS/V51xNS.
6) What door height and door width do I specify for the Detex V50xNS narrow stile vertical rod device?
Rod length is set by door height: 84 inch, 96 inch, and 120 inch doors are covered. Rail size is 36 inch or 48 inch to suit door width. The rail is field sizable, so a 36 inch rail can be trimmed for a narrower leaf, and the device is handed but field reversible.
7) What electrified options can I get on the Detex Value Series V50/V51 vertical rod device?
Five choices: EA hardwired electric alarm, EB electric alarm with battery, EE delayed egress, EX request to exit signal switch, or none. EB suits retail and storage exits where you want a local alarm without running power. EE delayed egress is the one to specify for loss prevention or psychiatric and memory care exits, and it needs to be coordinated with the fire alarm and local code. EX just reports use of the door back to an access control panel.
8) Is this Detex device Grade 1, and how does that compare to a Cal-Royal 9860 vertical rod device?
The Detex V50xNS/V51xNS is BHMA Grade 1 for commercial use. The Cal-Royal 9860 surface vertical rod device is Grade 2 and non fire rated, exit only. If your spec calls out Grade 1 panic hardware, the Cal-Royal won't satisfy it. Grade 1 alternatives we carry include the Delaney 9100 Series and the Von Duprin 8827-3FT, though the Von Duprin is a wide stile device.
9) I have narrow stile aluminum doors. Can I use a Von Duprin 8827 or Imperial ED-VR531 instead?
No. Both the Von Duprin 8827-3FT and the Imperial USA ED-VR531 are wide stile surface vertical rod devices, and a wide stile rail will not mount on a narrow stile aluminum leaf. For narrow stile the Detex V50xNS/V51xNS is the right form factor. The Von Duprin 8827-3FT is also listed for 1-3/4 inch doors only, which is a hollow metal or wood door thickness, not typical storefront.
10) What is a wide stile alternative to the Detex V5003PNxNS vertical rod exit device?
The Detex V5003PNxNS/V5103PNxNS is built for narrow stile doors, so on a wide stile aluminum or hollow metal door the Von Duprin 8827-3FT is the direct alternative. It is a Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device in the 88 Series, listed for 1-3/4 inch doors and supplied in a 3 ft width. The Imperial USA ED-VR531 is another Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device, in the ED-500 Series at 36 inches. Confirm stile width on the actual door before ordering either, since narrow and wide stile rails are not interchangeable.
11) If the door does not need key retracts latch trim, what vertical rod device can be used instead?
The Detex V5003PNxNS/V5103PNxNS is configured for a Key Retracts Latch Pull Trim function, which means outside key access through a pull trim. Where the opening is egress only with no outside entry, exit only devices cover it: the Cal-Royal 9860 is a surface vertical rod device with an exit only function, and the Marks USA M9900VR is a 36 inch by 84 inch vertical rod panic device, also exit only and non-handed. The Imperial USA ED-VR531 is likewise an exit only function device.
12) Which fire rated vertical rod exit devices compare to the fire rated Detex V5103PNxNS?
The Detex V50xNS/V51xNS Series is offered in both fire rated and non-rated configurations. Other fire rated vertical rod devices include the Delaney F9100 Series (DLY-694300), a Grade 1 fire rated heavy duty vertical rod device for a 36 by 84 inch door in aluminum finish, and the Marks USA M9900FVR at 36 by 84 inches, fire rated and exit only non-handed, with the MARM9900F-VR covering 48 by 84 inches. Note the Detex is a handed, field reversible device while the Marks fire rated units are non-handed.
13) Do I need to know the handing before ordering this Detex exit device?
Yes, you specify Right Hand Reverse or Left Hand Reverse at order time. Exterior doors that swing out are always reverse bevel, which is why those are the two choices. The device is field reversible if you end up with the wrong hand, but ordering to the actual swing saves a step on site.
14) What finishes does the Detex V5003PNxNS come in, and will it match dark bronze or black storefront?
Two finishes: 628 brushed aluminum and 711 black aluminum. Black aluminum is the one that blends with black anodized storefront framing; 628 matches clear anodized aluminum. Neither is a bronze, so on dark bronze framing 711 is the closer visual match of the two.
15) If I don't need outside key access, is there a cheaper vertical rod device than this Detex?
Yes. The V5003PNxNS/V5103PNxNS includes key retracts latch pull trim, so you are paying for outside access. For an exit only opening with no outside trim, exit only vertical rod devices we carry include the Marks USA M9900VR at 36 x 84 and 48 x 84, and the fire rated M9900FVR at 36 x 84. The Marks M9900VR is non-handed, which simplifies ordering. Keep in mind those are wide stile style rails, not narrow stile, so on aluminum storefront the Detex is still the fit.
16) Can I rekey or change the outside trim on the Detex V50 series without pulling the device off the door?
Yes. The trim system is modular, and the device accepts a variety of outside trims and functions with changeout or rekeying done without removing the device from the door. For a property manager with a fleet of storefront doors, that means a rekey after a tenant turnover is a cylinder job, not a reinstall.
17) Should I specify the 96 or 96B bottom strike on this Detex vertical rod device?
The 96 package gives a surface non-roller top strike with a non-dust proof bottom strike. 96B substitutes a dust proof bottom strike. Go with 96B anywhere grit, sand, water, or floor cleaning will get into the floor strike, which covers most exterior doors and schools. The 96 is fine on interior pairs in clean, dry traffic.
18) What Grade 1 non-rated vertical rod device pairs with a 36 by 84 inch door besides the Detex Value Series?
The Detex V5003PNxNS/V5103PNxNS covers 84, 96 and 120 inch door heights with 36 inch and 48 inch rail sizes. For a single 36 by 84 inch non-rated opening, Delaney offers two Grade 1 vertical rod devices sized to that door: the 9100 Series (DLY-692301) in a stainless steel finish and the 8100 Series (DLY-8100-3684). Both are listed as non fire rated.
19) Which comparable vertical rod exit device is available in a 48 inch width like the Detex Value Series?
The Detex V5003PNxNS/V5103PNxNS is offered in 36 inch and 48 inch rail sizes and is field sizable. Among comparable devices sized for a 48 inch door, the Marks USA M9900VR-48X84 is a 48 by 84 inch vertical rod panic device, exit only, and the Marks USA MARM9900F-VR covers 48 by 84 inches in a fire rated exit only configuration.
20) Do any comparable vertical rod exit devices offer delayed egress or alarm options like the Detex V50xNS Series?
The Detex V5003PNxNS/V5103PNxNS can be configured with EA hardwired electric alarm, EB electric alarm with battery, EE delayed egress, or EX request to exit signal switch. The comparable vertical rod devices from Cal-Royal, Delaney, Imperial USA, Marks USA and Von Duprin are catalogued as mechanical exit devices without those electrified options, so if alarmed or delayed egress operation is part of the spec, stay with the Detex configuration.
21) What is the difference between a top and bottom rod device and a top rod only device when choosing against a comparable exit device?
The Detex V5003PNxNS/V5103PNxNS is ordered either as a top and bottom rod device or as a top rod only device, with strike choices of 96 surface non-roller top strike with non-dust proof bottom strike or 96B substituting a dust proof bottom strike. Comparable devices such as the Von Duprin 8827-3FT and the Delaney 9100 Series are supplied as vertical rod devices in fixed configurations, so if you need to eliminate the bottom rod and floor strike on a threshold that cannot take one, the top rod only Detex configuration addresses that directly.
22) What paperwork is available for installing the Detex V50/V51 Value Series device?
Detex publishes installation instructions and a parts list for the Value Series V50/V51, and the device ships with a patented mounting plate and strike locator system that replaces paper templates, which is what keeps the top and bottom strike locations true on a pair of doors.
