Dexter C1000 Series - Grade 1 Privacy Cylindrical Lever Lock, Clutching, Non-Keyed

No handing to specify. The C1000 privacy lock is non-handed, so one part number works on a left or right hand door. That is what makes it easy to stock as a single line item across a building.

It ships standard with the C1000-SL-234 springlatch, a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1 inch diameter bore. If your doors are prepped 2-3/8, you can select the C1000-SL 2-3/8 springlatch instead at the time of order. The faceplate is 1 x 2-1/4 inches, square corner and beveled.

The C1000-ACLS strike is included, an ANSI 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch curved lip strike. That is the standard ANSI frame prep on commercial hollow metal frames, so it drops into an existing ANSI strike cutout.

The privacy function is non-keyed, which is correct for a bedroom or bathroom door: push-button lock inside, emergency release outside, no key. Other functions in the C1000 Series do accept cylinders, taking 6-pin Schlage C keyed different or SFIC in 6-pin or 7-pin. If you need a key on the opening, order a keyed C1000 function rather than the privacy.

Every C1000 privacy lever is a clutching design in both the curved and regular lever styles. When the lock is engaged, the outside lever spins free instead of transferring force to the internal mechanism. In multi-family and student housing where levers get yanked and hung on, that free spin is what keeps the lockset from being broken by abuse.

Grade 1 is the heaviest ANSI/BHMA cylindrical rating and is what you want on high-traffic commercial openings, hotel and dorm baths, and multi-family units. The Dexter C1000 privacy carries the ANSI/BHMA F76 privacy function with an inside push-button, so it is the wrong choice for a closet or corridor door that must never latch locked.

Dummy and passage trims are the common mix-up. The BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy trim with no latch at all, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 single dummy lever. The Design Hardware X75 and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 are Grade 1 but passage function, meaning they latch without locking. Only the Dexter C1000 privacy carries the ANSI/BHMA F76 privacy function with the inside locking feature needed on a bedroom or restroom door.

Go to a keyed function. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom lock with the Withnell lever, and the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is offered in the AG Series with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Dexter C1000 privacy is non-keyed by design, so it cannot be converted with a cylinder.
