Dexter DB2000 Series - Grade 2 Double Cylinder Deadbolt

A double cylinder deadbolt takes a key on both sides, inside and out. There is no thumbturn, so nobody can throw or retract the bolt without a key. That is what you want next to glass, where someone could break a lite and reach a thumbturn. The trade-off is egress: occupants need a key to get out, and many jurisdictions restrict double cylinder on required exit doors. If you need keyed outside and free egress inside, go with a cylinder x thumbturn model like the Arrow DBX61 Grade 2 or the Hager 3115.

Both are in the box. Every function ships with a 2-3/8 to 2-3/4 inch universal square corner latch, part number 30-253, plus a 1-1/8 by 2-3/4 inch square corner lipless strike. The universal latch means you do not specify backset when ordering, it adjusts to either the 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch bore centerline. You would only buy separate hardware if your frame needs a lipped or ANSI T strike rather than the flat lipless one supplied.

The conventional cylinder option is a 6-pin cylinder in Schlage C keyway, shipped keyed different. Schlage C is the most widely stocked commercial keyway, so a locksmith can normally rekey these into an existing Schlage C masterkey system on site. If you run a small format interchangeable core program instead, order the SFIC prep less core version and drop in your own cores, which keeps the deadbolts on the same key system as the rest of the building.

Depends on whether you run interchangeable cores. The conventional KDC version arrives complete with a 6-pin Schlage C cylinder, keyed different, and is the simpler buy for a one-off door or a small landlord. The SFIC prep ships less core, so you supply cores from your own system, which is what an institutional or MRO buyer standardizing a facility wants. One catch: the SFIC version fits 1-5/8 to 2 inch doors while the conventional one fits 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch. On a standard 1-3/4 inch door only the conventional cylinder is in range.

In most cases yes, if you are swapping a standard bored tubular deadbolt. The DB2000 is a bored deadbolt with a universal latch that covers both the 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inch backsets, which are the two backsets used on virtually all tubular deadbolt preps, so the existing cross bore and edge bore usually line up. What will not carry over is the strike: the supplied strike is a 1-1/8 by 2-3/4 inch square corner lipless plate, so if your frame currently has a radius corner or lipped strike you will be cutting the mortise or sourcing a different plate. A mortise deadlock, a hook bolt, or a surface-mounted deadbolt is a different prep entirely and is not a swap.

The Cal-Royal CRB800 is a Grade 1 heavy duty single cylinder deadbolt with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch. The Hager 3214 double cylinder and Hager 3215 single cylinder deadbolts both carry a fire rating and cover 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. All three are cylinder-side alternatives to the Dexter DB2000, which is a Grade 2 non UL listed 3 hour deadbolt.

The Hager 3214 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway and a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range, which matches the DB2000's 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch range and its Schlage C 6-pin conventional cylinder option. The Hager 3214 also carries a fire rating. The Delaney LU Series 320601 is another Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt, supplied in Stainless Steel US32D finish.

The Design Hardware D1 Series is a Grade 1 double cylinder deadbolt rated Extra Heavy Duty for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Dexter DB2000 is Grade 2 and covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, so it spans the thinner doors the D1 Series does not. Where the opening is a consistent 1-3/4 inch and the spec calls for Grade 1, the D1 Series meets it.

The Dexter DB2000 covered here is double cylinder, keyed on both sides. For a cylinder by thumbturn arrangement on a comparable Grade 2 body, the Arrow DBX61 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with cylinder x thumbturn function, and the Hager 3215 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with a 1 inch throw covering 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Egress codes in many jurisdictions require the thumbturn side on doors in a means of egress, so confirm the local requirement before specifying a key both sides bolt.

Not on function. The Arrow E61 26D IC is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadlock in SFIC prep less core covering 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, so it shares the SFIC-prep-less-core ordering approach with the DB2000 SFIC variant, but it is keyed one side only. The DB2000 in double cylinder is keyed both sides. If both faces must be keyed, the Arrow E61 will not cover the opening.

The Dexter DB2000 standard cylinder range is 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, with the SFIC range running 1-5/8 inch to 2 inch. For a thicker leaf with a keyed both sides deadbolt, the Deltana 7312KA2 is a Grade 3 double cylinder deadbolt covering 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. For a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock on thicker doors, the Corbin Russwin DL3011 covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch, though it is a cylinder by blank arrangement rather than keyed both sides.

Several parts carry double cylinder or deadbolt in the name without being a complete lock. The Baldwin Reserve 8BR0618001 is a deadbolt spacer with a double cylinder function designation, the BEST 8T T Series is a tubular deadbolt tube component, and the Arrow 460 is a mortise lock strike for latchbolt and deadbolt functions with a straight lip. None of these replace the Dexter DB2000, which arrives as a complete Grade 2 deadbolt with its latch and a 1-1/8 inch by 2-3/4 inch square corner lipless strike.

For most multi-family unit doors, back-of-house doors, and light commercial entries, Grade 2 is the normal spec and the DB2000 is built for commercial use at that level. Step up to Grade 1 where the door sees heavy public traffic or a higher security requirement, for example the Design Hardware D1 Series Grade 1 double cylinder deadbolt, rated extra heavy duty for 1-3/4 inch doors. Grade 3 products like the Callan 210S double cylinder are residential-weight by comparison.

Several, depending on what is driving the choice. Staying in Grade 2 double cylinder, the Delaney LU Series comes in stainless steel US32D and the Hager 3214 uses the same Schlage C keyway. Need heavier duty on a 1-3/4 inch door, the Design Hardware D1 Series is Grade 1 extra heavy duty. For a thicker door, the Deltana 7312KA2 is a Grade 3 double cylinder covering 1-3/8 to 2 inches. On decorative openings, Baldwin Reserve offers double cylinder deadbolts in contemporary round and square trim.

A double cylinder deadbolt is the wrong choice on a door people have to get out of in a hurry, since it needs a key from the inside. Two directions in the same Grade 2 class: the Arrow E60 is a non-keyed exit deadlock, blank plate outside with a thumbturn inside, for doors that must never be keyed from the pull side, and the Arrow E61 single cylinder deadlock with SFIC prep covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors when you want key control outside and free operation inside.

It is a different security model, not a drop-in. The Delaney KP400 is a Grade 2 electronic deadbolt with a programmable remote, matching the DB2000's Grade 2 rating but operating by code rather than key. The Codelocks CL2210 is an electronic mortise deadbolt, and the Codelocks CL2200 is a medium duty electronic surface deadbolt in Brushed Steel. None of these carry the DB2000's keyed-both-sides double cylinder function, so on a glass front or storefront back door where both faces must be key-controlled, the mechanical double cylinder is still the answer.

They share the double cylinder function, but they are different specifications. The Baldwin Reserve Contemporary Round and Contemporary Square deadbolts are residential-styled decorative trim products; the Dexter DB2000 is a commercial Grade 2 deadbolt supplied in 605, 613, 626 and 630 architectural finishes with a 2-3/8 inch by 2-3/4 inch universal square corner latch, p/n 30-253, and a 1-1/8 inch by 2-3/4 inch square corner lipless strike. On a commercial opening where the strike and latch must match adjacent doors, the DB2000 hardware set is the one to check against the frame prep.

The Arrow E60 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock, non-keyed, with a blank plate by thumbturn function covering 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. It shares the Dexter DB2000's Grade 2 rating and door thickness range but takes no cylinder at all, where the DB2000 is keyed on both faces. For a one-sided application, the Callan Model 205S is a Grade 3 one-sided half-bore deadbolt.

The Dexter DB2000 lists 630 US32D Satin Stainless among its finishes, alongside 605 Bright Brass, 613 Oil-Rubbed Bronze and 626 Satin Chrome. The Delaney LU Series 320601 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt supplied in Stainless Steel US32D, the same finish designation, which is useful when standardizing a facility on one finish across more than one brand.

The Deltana CL200LAIC is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt in interchangeable core, non-cylinder, with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Dexter DB2000 SFIC variants ship as SFIC prep less core and cover a 1-5/8 inch to 2 inch door range. Two things differ: the Deltana is keyed one side against the DB2000's keyed both sides, and its stated backset is 2-3/4 inch, so verify the existing bore centerline before ordering across.

The Dexter DB2000 is a Grade 2 bored deadbolt, keyed both sides, for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Corbin Russwin DL3211 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock in a cylinder by blank arrangement for 1-3/4 inch doors, meaning one face carries no operating trim at all. Choose by whether the inside face needs to release the bolt: the DL3211's blank side does not.

The Falcon D211 is a Grade 2 medium duty classroom function deadbolt with single cylinder operation, and the Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom deadbolt with an adjustable backset. The Dexter DB2000 ships with a 2-3/8 inch by 2-3/4 inch universal square corner latch, p/n 30-253, which covers both common backsets. Where the existing bore centerline is unknown across a fleet of doors, the universal latch on the DB2000 and the adjustable backset on the Falcon D111 both handle it.
