Dexter Grade 1 Deadlatch for C1000 Series

The Dexter C1000 Series deadlatch is sold in both 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch backsets, and they are not interchangeable. Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore in the door: 2-3/8 inches is the usual residential-style prep, 2-3/4 inches the common commercial one. Pull the old latch and measure rather than eyeballing it, because the wrong backset leaves the latch tailpiece short of the lock chassis.

This is a replacement latch for the Dexter C1000 Series specifically. The latch and the lock chassis are matched parts, so it is the right call when you are rebuilding or re-latching a C1000 lever and the wrong call as a generic drop-in for another manufacturer's cylindrical lock. If the lock in the door is a Deltana, Schlage, or Accentra, order that brand's latch instead.

If you are servicing a mixed building and want one part on the truck, Schlage's adjustable units cover both: the 16-480 deadlatch for the S200 Series and the 16-228 for the S200 and CS210 Series both adjust between 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inch. Those go into Schlage chassis, though, not a Dexter C1000.

Latch parts are matched to the lock chassis series they were designed with, so confirm which chassis is in the door before ordering either one.

A deadlatch is the spring latch that retracts with the knob or lever and holds the door closed; a deadbolt latch is a separate throw bolt operated by key or thumbturn. For a deadbolt, the Schlage 12-289 fits the B500 Series with an adjustable 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset and a 1 inch by 2-1/4 inch face with 1/4 inch round corners, and the Schlage 12-630 fits the B600, B700 and B800 Series with a 2-3/8 inch backset and a 1-1/8 inch by 2-1/4 inch square corner face. Match the part to the deadbolt series in the door, and note the face plate shape has to match the mortise prep already cut.

Commercial. The C1000 deadlatch is a commercial door hardware part, which is why the 2-3/4 inch backset is offered alongside the 2-3/8 inch. Property managers standardizing an apartment or office building on C1000 levers can stock one latch in the backset their doors are prepped for and keep spares on the shelf.

Yes, it is a keyed-function latch, so it suits the keyed entry C1000 levers rather than passage or privacy only. Replacing the latch does not change your keying: the cylinder stays in the lock chassis, so existing keys still operate the door.

Usually not, if you keep the same backset and the door and frame have not moved. The deadlatch plunger has to land on the strike plate face, not drop into the strike opening, or the door will not deadlock. Check that after install by closing the door and trying to push the latchbolt in with your thumb: if it moves, the plunger is falling into the cutout and the strike needs shimming or replacing.

For an entry-function replacement in the same two backsets, Deltana's G1RLE238 and G1RLE275 are Grade 1 entry latches. If the opening is a sidelite rather than the door leaf, the Accentra YSSL10 auxiliary sidelite latch is the part for that, rated for 1-3/4 inch thickness and fire rated. And if you are actually chasing a deadbolt latch rather than a deadlatch, Schlage's 12-289 for the B500 Series and 12-630 for the B600/700/800 Series are the deadbolt latch units.

They solve different problems. The Lockey M230 is a complete mechanical keyless digital combination lock with a deadlocking spring latch and an adjustable backset, and it fits doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The Dexter part is the latch alone, ordered for an existing C1000 Series lockset in a 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset. Choose the M230 when you are replacing the whole lock and want keyless combination access; choose the Dexter latch when the C1000 lock stays in the door and only the latch is being serviced.

The Deltana regular latch family is stated as Grade 1 across all four parts: the G1RLE238 and G1RLE275 in entry function at 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch backsets, and the G1RLP238 and G1RLP275 in passage/privacy function at the same two backsets. That gives a procurement team one Grade 1 family covering both functions and both common backsets, which is what standardizing across a building usually needs. For fire rated openings in a sidelite, the Accentra YSSL10 is the fire rated part in this group.

Round corner and square corner preps are not the same cut, and the 1 inch and 1-1/8 inch widths differ as well, so check the existing prep before choosing a replacement latch.
