Doorking Inc 26 Bit Wiegand Keypad Surface Mount

The 1815-051 (lighted) keypad is designed for indoor or outdoor applications. The keypad can be mounted to a gooseneck post for vehicular entry control or can be mounted to a wall or pilaster for pedestrian entry control. When used to control entry through an automated vehicular gate system, the keypad must be mounted a minimum of 10-feet away from the gate and gate operator, or mounted in such a way that the person using the keypad cannot come into contact with the gate or gate operator. The keypad outputs the data in a 26-bit Weigand format and must be connected to an access controller such as the DKS models 1520, 1833, 1835, 1837 or 1838.

Doorking 1815-051 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the DoorKing 1815-051 keypad work on its own to unlock a door or gate?
No. The 1815-051 is a credential input device only, not a standalone controller. It outputs 26-bit Wiegand data and has to be wired to an access controller to make any decision. DoorKing lists the 1520, 1833, 1835, 1837 and 1838 as the controllers it connects to. If you want a keypad that stores users and switches a relay by itself, this is the wrong part.
2) Can the 1815-051 keypad be mounted outdoors on a gooseneck post at a gate?
Yes, it is built for indoor or outdoor use and mounts to a gooseneck post for vehicle entry, or to a wall or pilaster for pedestrian entry. One siting rule matters for gates: it has to sit at least 10 feet from the gate and gate operator, or be positioned so the user cannot touch the gate or operator while entering a code.
3) I just need a keypad to release one interior door. Is the DoorKing 1815 the right choice?
Probably not. The 1815 is a Wiegand input that needs a separate controller behind it, so for a single opening it adds a panel you may not need. A standalone keypad that stores its own users and switches the lock directly is simpler: the SDC 918 Series is an indoor digital keypad with 500 user capacity, the ACSI 1355-1 is an indoor digital keypad, and the Securitron DK-12 is a standalone digital keypad. Use the 1815 when the opening is already tied into a DoorKing access controller.
4) What outdoor-rated keypad can I use in place of the DoorKing 1815 on a gate or exterior pilaster?
The DoorKing 1815 lighted keypad is designed for indoor or outdoor applications and mounts to a gooseneck post, wall or pilaster. If the opening calls for a different outdoor unit, the SDC 926 Series is an outdoor digital keypad with weather protection and 500 user capacity, and the SDC EntryCheck 920 Series is an indoor/outdoor digital keypad that also carries a proximity reader. The distinction to weigh is architecture: the 1815 feeds a Wiegand controller, while those SDC units are their own access control point.
5) I need both a code and a prox card at the gate - is the DoorKing 1815 the right part?
The DoorKing 1815 is a keypad only; it sends 26-bit Wiegand code data to an access controller, so card reading would come from a separate reader wired to that same panel. For a single unit that takes both, the SDC EntryCheck 920 Series is an indoor/outdoor digital keypad with a proximity reader built in, and the SDC EntryCheck 923 Series offers the same keypad-plus-proximity combination in a narrow body for indoor/outdoor access control.
6) Will this DoorKing keypad work with a non-DoorKing access control panel?
It sends standard 26-bit Wiegand, which is the common format most access panels read on their reader ports. DoorKing names its own 1520, 1833, 1835, 1837 and 1838 controllers as the intended hosts, and those are the pairings stated on record. For a third-party panel, the deciding factors are that the panel accepts 26-bit Wiegand and that you supply the keypad's 16 VAC separately, since most panels feed readers DC.
7) What outdoor-rated keypad alternatives are there if I do not want a Wiegand-only unit?
For exterior openings where a standalone device makes more sense, the SDC 926 Series is an outdoor digital keypad with weather protection and 500 user capacity. If you want cards or fobs as well as codes, the SDC EntryCheck 920 Series is an indoor/outdoor keypad with an integral proximity reader, and the 923 Series is the narrow-profile version of that for a mullion or narrow frame. The DoorKing 1815-051 is itself rated indoor or outdoor, but it still needs a controller.
8) Does the DoorKing 1815-051 require cutting into the post or wall to mount it?
No, it is the surface mount version, so it fastens to the face of a gooseneck post, wall or pilaster rather than dropping into a cut-out. That makes it the easier retrofit when you are adding a keypad to an existing pilaster or post that already has a conduit run.
9) The mullion on my glass entrance is too narrow for the DoorKing 1815 surface mount keypad - what fits?
The 1815 is a surface mount keypad sized for a gooseneck post, wall or pilaster rather than a narrow stile. Where width is the constraint, the SDC EntryCheck 923 Series is a narrow digital keypad with proximity reader intended for indoor/outdoor access control, which is the profile usually chosen for a narrow mullion or door stile.
10) Can I use the ACSI 1355-1 or SDC 918 keypad in place of the DoorKing 1815 at a vehicular gate?
They are not interchangeable for that opening. The ACSI 1355-1 is a digital indoor keypad and the SDC 918 Series is an indoor digital access control keypad, so neither is intended for the exposed gooseneck or pilaster position the DoorKing 1815 is built for - the 1815 is rated for indoor or outdoor use and runs on 16 VAC. For an exterior gate station the outdoor-capable SDC 926 Series or 920 Series are the closer match among those alternatives.
11) Is the DoorKing 1815-051 keypad backlit for night use?
Yes, the -051 version is the lighted keypad, so the buttons are readable after dark. That matters on a gooseneck at a drive entrance where there is no other light at the credential point.
12) Is the DoorKing 1815 keypad suitable for a commercial property or is it a residential device?
It is classified as commercial. In practice it is used on gated multi-family and commercial drive entrances feeding a DoorKing access controller, and on pedestrian openings where the keypad goes on a wall or pilaster.
