Doorking 1802-090 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How many residents can the DoorKing 1802 telephone entry system hold phone numbers for?
The 1802 holds up to 27 phone numbers on its own. If you need more, the 1816 Access Plus intercom expansion adds another 23, taking you to 50 residents total. For a small apartment building, a college residence hall wing, or a self storage office, that is usually enough; if you are managing a few hundred units, this is the wrong size of system.
2) What power supply does the DoorKing 1802 entry system need at the gate?
It runs on 16 VAC, 20 VA (250 mA), and a UL listed power transformer comes with the system. Plan a low voltage run from the transformer to the enclosure; you are not wiring 120V directly to the unit.
3) Does the DoorKing 1802 need a landline, or can it work on cell service?
Out of the box it connects to the phone network through an RJ11C or W jack, with a ringer equivalence of 0.0 A. Where there is no copper line at the gate, an optional cellular adapter can be added for wireless service. Voice communication with the resident runs over that phone connection, so one or the other has to be in place before the system does anything.
4) How do you program the DoorKing 1802 Access Plus, and does the software cost extra?
Programming is done from a PC using DoorKing's Access Plus Account Manager software for Windows, which is a free download. The 1802 is IP addressable, so you can reach it by direct connection, over a LAN, or across the internet; a built-in modem is also available. Access Plus models have no programming display or electronic directory on the unit itself, so plan on a PC being your programming tool rather than the keypad face.
5) How many entry points can one DoorKing 1802 control?
The 1802 controls two entry points on its own and expands to six additional access points over RS-485 using cards, keypads or transmitters. That covers a typical setup like a vehicle gate, a pedestrian gate, a pool and a laundry room off a single system and one user database.
6) Should I buy a telephone entry system like the DoorKing 1802 or just a standalone keypad?
They solve different problems. The 1802 is a telephone entry system: a visitor with no code calls a resident from the gate and the resident opens it over the phone, and it also manages cards, transmitters and schedules from a PC. If nobody needs to be called, and you just want staff or tenants to punch a code at a door, a standalone keypad is simpler and needs no phone line or PC, for example the Securitron DK-12 Stand Alone Digital Keypad or the SDC 918 Series indoor keypad with 500 user capacity.
7) If I only need to unlock one door with a code and do not need to call residents, what should I use instead of the DoorKing 1802?
The DoorKing 1802 is a telephone entry system - it places voice calls over the phone network from the entry point to residents, holds up to 27 phone numbers, and is PC programmable through the access plus account manager. If no one needs to be called and you only need code-based entry at a single door, a standalone digital keypad covers it: the Securitron DK-12 is a stand alone digital keypad, and the SDC 918 Series is an indoor digital access control keypad with 500 user capacity. Those do not dial phones, so visitors cannot be granted entry remotely by a resident.
8) The 1802 only holds 100 device codes. What keypad carries more users for a back door?
The DoorKing 1802 stores 100 device codes for cards, keypads and transmitters plus 10 temporary access codes. For a secondary door where you just need more code holders, the SDC 918 Series indoor keypad and the SDC 926 Series outdoor keypad are each rated at 500 user capacity. Note those are standalone door keypads and do not share the 1802 event history or its PC account manager scheduling.
9) I want residents to use fobs rather than codes. Does the DoorKing 1802 read proximity credentials, or do I need a different device?
The DoorKing 1802 controls up to six additional entry points via card, keypad or transmitter over RS-485, and an optional relay board lets you use existing 26-bit Wiegand devices - so credentials are read by the devices you add at those points, not by the 1802 face itself. If you want a single unit at the door that combines a keypad and a card reader, the SDC EntryCheck 920 Series is a digital keypad with a proximity reader, and the SDC EntryCheck 923 Series is the narrow-profile version with a proximity reader.
10) Does a standalone keypad like the Securitron DK-12 give me the same scheduling and audit trail as the DoorKing 1802?
No. The DoorKing 1802 is IP addressable and programmed from a PC over direct connection, LAN or internet using the access plus account manager, which carries holiday schedules, four hold open time zones, scheduled unlock and lock times, email notifications, live relay control and a 500 event history buffer. The Securitron DK-12 is a stand alone digital keypad, meaning it is programmed at the device and operates independently of a PC. Use the DK-12 where a single door just needs code entry.
11) Can I reuse my existing 26-bit Wiegand card readers with the 1802?
Yes, with the optional relay board. That board lets the 1802 work with existing 26-bit Wiegand devices, so an existing reader population does not have to be replaced when the entry system is swapped. Without it, the expansion devices run on RS-485.
12) How many cards or codes does the 1802 store, and does it keep a record of who came through?
Storage is 100 device codes covering cards, keypad codes and transmitters, plus 10 temporary access codes for contractors or short-term guests. The system keeps a 500 event history buffer, and you can set up email notifications and control relays live from the PC. For schedules there are four hold-open time zones, a holiday schedule, and scheduled unlock/lock times.
13) Is the DoorKing 1802 listed to any access control standard?
The 1802 complies with UL 294 and is ETL listed. Its telephone registrations are FCC (US) DUF6VT-12874-OT-0 and DOC (CAN) 1736 4507 A, so it is cleared for connection to the phone network on both sides of the border.
14) I need more than 100 credentials at one door. Is the 1802 still the right choice?
Not if credential count is the driver. The 1802 tops out at 100 device codes and 27 phone numbers, which suits smaller properties. Where you just need a high user count at an opening, the SDC 918 Series indoor keypad and the SDC 926 Series outdoor keypad both carry 500 user capacity. Those are door keypads though, with no phone-to-resident calling.
15) Will the 1802 fit in a tight gate post or narrow wall opening?
It is a slim surface mount unit, built specifically to go into tight spaces, which is the main reason people pick the 1802 over larger tele-entry cabinets. If the constraint is at a door rather than a gate and you only need code entry, a narrow-profile keypad such as the SDC EntryCheck 923 Series is made for tight mounting surfaces and also reads proximity credentials.
16) I have a narrow mullion at the secondary entrance - is the 1802 the right unit there?
The DoorKing 1802 is a slim surface mount telephone entry unit designed to fit in tight spaces, but it is the main-entry calling station for the system. On a narrow aluminum mullion at a secondary door, a narrow-profile reader is the usual choice: the SDC EntryCheck 923 Series is a narrow digital keypad with proximity reader rated for indoor or outdoor use. The 1802 can control that secondary point as one of its six expansion entry points.
17) Is the DoorKing 1802 meant for residential or commercial use?
It is a commercial-grade access control system. Typical installs are apartment complexes and college residence halls, gated communities, mixed use buildings, commercial and industrial sites, parking facilities and self storage.
