Doorking Inc Prox Card Reader

DoorKing offers DK Prox proximity card readers which are compatible with the 1830 Series access controllers and almost all access controllers with a 26-bit Wiegand input. All readers feature a cosmetically appealing design that will blend with any architectural design and offer high durability and reliability.  Mifare card readers are also available for those applications using Mifare Classic cards (we do not sell the Mifare cards, just the Mifare card readers).

AVI (or Automated Vehicle ID) Long Range readers operate in the same manner as proximity card systems, but with longer ranges. A typical AVI system places a tag on the vehicle, rather than having the user carry it. In this manner, a gate system will open automatically as the vehicle approaches with a properly credentialed tag. This provides convenience and is ideal in applications where only authorized vehicles are allowed entry.

Doorking 1815-301 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the DoorKing 1815-301 prox reader work with a controller that isn't a DoorKing?
Yes, as long as the controller takes a 26-bit Wiegand input. The DK Prox readers are built for the DoorKing 1830 Series access controllers and work with almost any access controller accepting 26-bit Wiegand. If your panel uses a different credential format or a non-Wiegand interface, this is the wrong reader.
2) How close does a card have to be to the DK Prox 1815-301 reader?
Up to 4 inches. That's a present-the-card-at-the-reader range, so it suits a door, a pedestrian gate, or a drive-up call box where the driver rolls down the window. If you want the gate to open without the driver reaching out, you need a long range AVI reader instead.
3) Should I use a prox card reader or a long range AVI reader at my gate?
Depends on whether you want the driver to do anything. The DK Prox 1815-301 reads at up to 4 inches, so the credential has to be presented at the reader. DoorKing's AVI long range readers work the same way electronically but read from an adjustable 8 to 25 feet (3.6 m to 7.6 m) and include a reader control box, with the tag mounted on the vehicle rather than carried. Use AVI where only authorized vehicles enter and you want the gate opening as the car approaches; use the prox reader where visitors, tenants on foot, or mixed vehicles present a card.
4) Is the DoorKing 1815-301 a keypad, or do I need a separate PIN entry device?
It's a card reader only, not a keypad. If your opening needs PIN entry, or PIN plus card, look at a combination unit such as the SDC EntryCheck 920 Series indoor/outdoor digital keypad with proximity reader, or the narrower SDC EntryCheck 923 Series for a tight mounting surface like a mullion. For PIN-only indoor control, the SDC 918 Series or the ACSI 1355-1 digital indoor keypad cover that.
5) Is there a standalone alternative if I don't have an access control panel?
The DoorKing 1815-301 is a reader, not a controller, so it has to report into a panel with a 26-bit Wiegand input. If you have no panel and only need to control one door, a standalone unit makes more sense: the Securitron DK-12 stand alone digital keypad, or the SDC 918 Series with 500 user capacity indoors. For an exposed exterior door with no panel, the SDC 926 Series outdoor keypad with weather protection holds 500 users.
6) I need credential entry plus a keypad code at the same door - what works instead of the DK Prox 1815-301 reader?
The DoorKing DK Prox 1815-301 is a proximity card reader only, with no keypad, so codes have to come from a separate device. The SDC EntryCheck 920 Series is a combined digital keypad with proximity reader rated for indoor or outdoor use, and the SDC EntryCheck 923 Series is the same keypad-plus-prox combination in a narrow body for mullions and narrow stiles.
7) The reader is going on an exterior gate pedestal - is the DK Prox 1815-301 the right pick or should I look at something else?
The DoorKing DK Prox line includes readers built for outdoor applications controlling access to secure areas, and the 1815-301 runs on 12 VDC. If you want a code-entry device in that same exposed location instead, the SDC 926 Series is an outdoor digital keypad with weather protection and 500 user capacity, and the SDC EntryCheck 920 Series is rated indoor or outdoor.
8) Can an SDC or Securitron keypad replace the DoorKing 1815-301 on an 1830 Series access controller?
Not as a like-for-like. The DK Prox 1815-301 is built to feed an 1830 Series access controller, or nearly any controller with a 26-bit Wiegand input, so the controller does the decision making. The SDC 918 Series, SDC 926 Series and Securitron DK-12 are stand alone or self-contained keypads that make the unlock decision themselves rather than reporting a Wiegand credential upstream - they look like substitutes but serve a different architecture.
9) Will the DoorKing 1815-301 read a tag from a car without the driver rolling down the window?
No. The DK Prox 1815-301 reads up to about 4 inches, so it is a present-the-credential device. For vehicle entry without reaching out, DoorKing's AVI long range readers adjust from 8 ft to 25 ft and use a windshield or headlight tag designed for the DKS 1815-350 long range reader. None of the SDC 918, 920, 923 or 926 keypads or the Securitron DK-12 are long range devices - they are all at-the-door keypads.
10) What power supply do I need for the DoorKing DK Prox 1815-301 reader?
12 VDC at 200mA. Size the access control power supply accordingly, and account for the draw on each reader if you're running several off one supply.
11) Can the DoorKing prox reader be mounted outside?
Yes. DK Prox readers are offered for outdoor applications controlling access to secure areas as well as indoor ones, and the housing is built for durability in an exposed location. The design is kept plain so it blends into the architecture on a building entrance or gate post.
12) Do my residents need a card, or can they use their phone with the DoorKing prox system?
Either. Alongside cards, DoorKing offers the DK Prox Dot decal, which sticks to the back of a mobile device inside the case and turns the phone into a credential with no app to install. Useful in multi-family where you'd rather not manage an app rollout across tenants.
13) We use Mifare Classic cards already. Can we keep them?
DoorKing makes Mifare card readers for exactly that case, so the credentials your building already issues can stay in use. Note that the 1815-301 is a DK Prox reader; the Mifare version is a separate reader, and the Mifare cards themselves are not sold here.
14) Is there a simpler option than the DoorKing 1815-301 if I do not want to issue cards at all?
Yes. The 1815-301 is a DK Prox card reader, so every user needs a credential. If you would rather hand out codes, the SDC 918 Series is an indoor digital access control keypad with 500 user capacity, the Securitron DK-12 is a stand alone digital keypad, and the ACSI 1355-1 is a digital indoor keypad. Those eliminate card issuance entirely.
15) Standardizing one device across indoor offices and outdoor gates - DoorKing 1815-301 or an SDC unit?
For a single part number covering both environments, the SDC EntryCheck 920 Series is specified for indoor and outdoor use with keypad and proximity reader in one housing, and the 923 Series carries the same indoor/outdoor rating in a narrow form. The DoorKing DK Prox family covers both as well, with separate models for indoor applications and outdoor applications, and the 1815-301 is a commercial 12 VDC device.
16) Do the DoorKing AVI vehicle tags need batteries replaced?
No. The DKS Headlight/Windshield Tag, designed for use with the DKS 1815-350 Long Range Reader, contains no battery, so it never wears out. It's a low visibility tag that mounts on the vehicle rather than being carried by the driver.
17) Is the DoorKing DK Prox reader suitable for a commercial property, or is it a residential product?
It's classed as commercial hardware, and it's an electronic access device rather than mechanical. That suits gated multi-family, commercial parking, and MRO access control where readers are being standardized across entries on 1830 Series controllers or other 26-bit Wiegand panels.
