Product details

The DORMA 1800 Series Hold Open (H) function is designed for buildings where it is desirable to have smoke/fire doors in the open position under normal circumstances, but which must close upon loss of current. These units will operate as a standard door control, whether or not power is applied.

Swing free function

The DORMA 1800 Series Swing Free (SF) function is designed for buildings where it is desirable to have fire/smoke doors operating as if there were no closing device fitted under normal circumstances, but must be self-closing under alarm or loss of current.

Smoke and fire control

The 1800 Series door closer will allow unimpeded, easy access throughout a building while not affecting its integrity to control the spread of smoke and/or fire.

Door closing control

Upon interruption or loss of current in either the H or FS specification, the unit will automatically close the door from any angle of opening. This is caused by release of the electromagnetic solenoid, thus allowing the door closer to perform its function.

1) Will the DORMA 1816 hold my fire door open and release it when the alarm sounds without tying into a separate smoke detection system?
That's exactly what the 1816 is built for. It's a surface-mounted door closer with an electromagnetic holder/release and an integral smoke detector-power supply, so the detector, the hold-open magnet and the closer are one assembly on the door. Under normal conditions the door stands open; when the detector picks up smoke or the current drops out, the solenoid releases and the closer takes the door shut from any angle of opening. It runs as a conventional door control whether or not power is applied, so a dead circuit still leaves you with a working closer rather than a free-swinging fire door.
2) What is the difference between the hold open (HJ) arm and the swing free (SFJ) arm on a DORMA 1800 Series closer?
Two different behaviors for two different openings. Hold open parks the door in the open position under normal conditions and closes it on alarm or power loss, which suits a corridor or cross-corridor smoke barrier you want standing open all day. Swing free lets the door operate as though no closing device were fitted at all, so it swings freely both directions from closed, then becomes self-closing under alarm or loss of current. Swing free is the one to specify on patient room and resident room doors where somebody has to move the door by hand all day and closer resistance is a nuisance. Both arms here are top jamb mount on the push side.
3) Do I have to order a DORMA 1816 closer left hand or right hand?
Yes, handing has to be specified. The 1816 is a handed unit and every combination is built either left hand or right hand, so a wrong call means the arm and magnet land on the wrong side of the opening. Stand outside the door on the side it swings away from you: hinges on the left is left hand, hinges on the right is right hand. Handing pairs with the finish and the arm type, so you're specifying three things on the order line.
4) Is the DORMA 1816 mounted on the push side or the pull side of the door?
Push side only, top jamb mount. The closer body goes on the frame face above the door with the arm reaching back to the door, which is the arrangement you want when the door swings away from the corridor and there's no room on the pull side for a regular arm. If your opening needs the unit on the pull side, this is the wrong configuration and you'd want the pull side version of the 1800 Series instead.
5) Can I use the DORMA 1816 on a barrier-free opening that has to meet ADA opening force?
No. The 1816 is not ADA compliant, so it should not go on an opening where the accessible opening force requirement applies. If the door is on an accessible route and you still need hold open with alarm release, the swing free arm is worth looking at, because a swing free door has no closer resistance to push against under normal operation. For an opening where the ADA compliance itself is what's being specified, this is the wrong unit and you need a barrier-free rated closer or a low energy operator.
6) What voltage does the DORMA 1816 electromagnetic holder run on?
It takes 24VAC, 24VDC or 120V, which is why an electrician can usually tie it in without adding a transformer. On a job where the fire alarm panel already provides a 24V releasing circuit, run it off that. Where there's no low voltage available at the head of the opening and you only have line voltage in the frame, the 120V option means you're not pulling a new low voltage home run.
