DORMA TS9315 EMR/PT Series

Holder/Release Devices with Integral Door Closers

The EMR Series holder/release device incorporates a photoelectric detector and can control the spread of smoke and fire in a specific location or throughout the building if wired into a central alarm panel.

Holder/release devices ANSI/BHMA certified.

  • Three models included
  • Interfaces with new or existing fire/smoke control systems
  • Can be wired for concealed or surface wiring
  • EMR can control one EMF unit for pair of doors
  • Patented hold open design

Product details

Three models included

The EMF/EMR Series includes three models for price and door closer feature/function considerations. The TS93 in Contur Design, with the extra efficient cam and roller technology, can be used on larger doors, while the 8900 rack and pinion closer offers a narrow projection for less cost. When value engineering is a concern, the 8600 meets the need.

Patented hold open design

The EMF/EMR Series’ patented hold open design prevents damage to the door, frame, holder/release device, or other installed hardware. This design enables initial hold while allowing the door to be manually opened beyond the hold open point.

Compatibility and wiring

The EMF/EMR Series is compatible with new or existing fire/smoke control systems and can be wired for concealed or surface wiring.

Door shuts in case of an alarm state or power failure

In the case of an alarm state signaled by the central control system or main power failure, current to the electromagnetic hold open device is interrupted, thus allowing the door closing mechanism to take over and shut the door.

Dormakaba TS9315-EMR-PT-689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the DORMA TS9315 EMR closer hold a door open and release it when the fire alarm goes off?
The TS9315 EMR combines a door closer with an electromagnetic hold-open track and a built-in photoelectric smoke detector. In normal use the magnet holds the door open at the set point. On an alarm signal, either from the unit's own detector or from a central fire/smoke control panel it is wired into, current to the magnet drops and the closer takes over and shuts the door. Main power failure does the same thing, so the door fails closed rather than fails held open. That is what lets a corridor or cross-corridor opening stay open for daily traffic and still compartmentalize smoke.
2) Can one TS9315 EMR detector unit control a pair of doors, or do I need a detector on each leaf?
One EMR unit can control one EMF unit, so a pair of doors takes one detector-equipped EMR on one leaf and a non-detector EMF holder/release on the other. You do not need two detectors. Budget the pair as one EMR plus one EMF plus the interconnecting wiring.
3) Which side of the door does the TS9315 EMR/PT mount on, and does handing matter when I order?
Push side mounting, with the track on the push face of the door. The unit is non-handed, so the same part works on a left or right hand opening and you do not specify handing on the order. What you do need to confirm is that the push side has clear head frame and that nothing on the wall interferes with the hold-open track and the door swinging past the hold point.
4) What spring size range does the DORMA TS9315 EMR cover, and will it handle a wide or heavy exterior-width door?
Sizes 1 through 5, adjustable, which covers everything from a light interior leaf up to the largest doors a surface closer is normally asked to handle. It is a heavy duty, commercial rated unit. The TS93 body uses cam and roller technology rather than plain rack and pinion, which is the reason this model in the family is the one specified for the larger and heavier doors instead of the 8900 or 8600.
5) Is the DORMA TS9315 EMR ADA compliant for an accessible opening?
No. The TS9315 EMR is not ADA compliant as supplied, so it should not be specified where the opening has to meet accessible opening force requirements. It is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial holder/release closer intended for smoke and fire compartmentation duty. If the opening is on an accessible route with an opening force limit, take that up as a separate spec decision before you commit to this unit.
6) Do I have to run conduit for the TS9315 EMR, or can it be surface wired in an existing building?
Either. The EMR holder/release can be wired concealed through the frame or run surface, which is what makes it workable as a retrofit on an existing corridor where you are not opening up the frame. It also interfaces with an existing fire and smoke control system, so the panel does not have to be new.
7) What happens if someone pulls the door shut while the magnet is holding it open? Will it tear the arm off the frame?
No. The hold open design on the EMF/EMR Series is a patented arrangement built to prevent damage to the door, frame, holder/release device, or other hardware on the opening when the door is forced past the hold point. It holds initially and still lets the door be pushed open manually beyond the hold open point. That matters in a building where staff and residents will move the door by hand rather than waiting for the panel.
8) Do I need to order a separate detector or relay module with the TS9315 EMR?
No separate detector. The EMR version has the photoelectric smoke detector integral to the unit, which is the difference between EMR and the plain EMF holder/release. Order the EMR where you want local detection at the opening, and the EMF where the release signal comes only from the building panel or where it is the second leaf of a pair being run off an EMR.
9) I just need a closer with a hold-open track, not a smoke detector. Is there a simpler alternative to the TS9315 EMR?
If the opening does not need local detection and does not need to release off a fire alarm interface, the Cal-Royal CR441EHO is a Grade 1 closer with an electronic hold-open track arm and no integral detector. Same Grade 1 rating. Choose the TS9315 EMR when the door is part of a smoke compartmentation scheme and has to close on alarm or power loss; choose the plainer electronic hold-open track when you only want a controlled hold and release.
10) Is the TS9315 EMR certified, and what grade is it?
Grade 1, and the holder/release devices in the series are ANSI/BHMA certified. Grade 1 is the top tier in the BHMA scheme and the level normally written into commercial and institutional specs, so it satisfies a facility standard calling for Grade 1 door controls.
11) What finishes does the DORMA TS9315 EMR/PT come in for matching other closers in a building?
Six finishes: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. For a property manager standardizing a corridor, 689 aluminum and 690 dark bronze are the two that most commonly match existing surface closers already hung in commercial buildings.
