Product details

Three models included

The EMF/EMR Series includes three models for price and door closer feature/function considerations. The TS93 in Contur Design, with the extra efficient cam and roller technology, can be used on larger doors, while the 8900 rack and pinion closer offers a narrow projection for less cost. When value engineering is a concern, the 8600 meets the need.

Patented hold open design

The EMF/EMR Series’ patented hold open design prevents damage to the door, frame, holder/release device, or other installed hardware. This design enables initial hold while allowing the door to be manually opened beyond the hold open point.

Compatibility and wiring

The EMF/EMR Series is compatible with new or existing fire/smoke control systems and can be wired for concealed or surface wiring.

Door shuts in case of an alarm state or power failure

In the case of an alarm state signaled by the central control system or main power failure, current to the electromagnetic hold open device is interrupted, thus allowing the door closing mechanism to take over and shut the door.

Dormakaba 8956-EMR-PT-689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the DORMA 8956 EMR do when the fire alarm goes off or the power drops?
It releases the door. The 8956 EMR holds the door open electromagnetically, and when the central control system signals an alarm state or main power fails, current to the hold open magnet is cut and the integral closer shuts the door. That fail-safe behavior is inherent to the device, so a power outage closes the opening the same way an alarm does.
2) Does the 8956 EMR need to be tied into a building fire alarm panel to work?
No. The EMR version has its own photoelectric smoke detector built in, so it can control the spread of smoke and fire at that one opening on its own. If you do want building-wide release, it interfaces with new or existing fire/smoke control systems when wired into a central alarm panel. Either approach works with the same unit.
3) Which side of the door does the DORMA 8956 EMR/PT mount on, and does it have a handing?
Push side mounting, surface applied, with a track arm rather than a standard parallel arm. It is non-handed, so one unit covers left or right hand openings and you don't have to specify handing on the order.
4) Is the DORMA 8956 EMR strong enough for a heavy exterior or large corridor door?
It is a heavy duty Grade 1 commercial closer sized 5 to 6, which is the upper end of the standard size range and covers wide or heavy doors. If your opening is larger than a size 6 closer handles, the EMF/EMR family also includes the TS93 in Contur Design with cam and roller technology, which Dormakaba positions for larger doors.
5) Can one DORMA 8956 EMR control a pair of doors?
Yes, with a second unit. The EMR, being the detector version, can control one EMF unit on the other leaf of a pair. So you order the EMR for one leaf and the non-detector EMF for the mate, and both release together.
6) Is the DORMA 8956 EMR ADA compliant for opening force?
No. The 8956 EMR is listed as not ADA compliant, and at closer size 5 to 6 the opening force is above what barrier-free openings allow. If the door is on an accessible route and has to meet ADA opening force, this is the wrong unit for that leaf.
7) What is the difference between the DORMA 8956 EMR and the 8956 EMF?
The detector. The EMR carries an integral photoelectric smoke detector, so it senses smoke at that opening and drops the door on its own. The EMF has no detector and releases only on a signal from the fire alarm system or on power loss. On a pair of doors, the EMR is the one that carries the detector and it controls the EMF on the opposite leaf.
8) What is the difference between the DORMA 8956 EMR/PT and the Cal-Royal CR441EHO electronic hold-open closer?
Both are Grade 1 closers with an electrified hold-open track arm, so either will hold a door open and release it on signal. The DORMA 8956 EMR/PT carries an integral photoelectric detector, which lets it sense smoke at the opening itself and release locally as well as on a signal from a central fire or smoke control panel. The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is described as a Grade 1 door closer with an electronic hold-open track arm, so it depends on the signal it is wired to receive. If the opening needs a self-contained detector at the door, the 8956 EMR/PT is the one built for it.
9) Is a standard track closer the same thing as the 8956 EMR/PT?
No. A plain track arm closer simply closes the door; the 8956 EMR/PT is an electronic rack and pinion track closer with an electromagnetic hold open that drops the door on alarm or power failure, sized 5 to 6 for heavy duty commercial openings. The nearest true alternative is another electrified hold-open unit such as the Cal-Royal CR441EHO Grade 1 closer with electronic hold-open track arm. A mechanical hold-open track is not a substitute on a fire or smoke opening.
10) Will the door get damaged if someone forces it past the hold open point?
No. The patented hold open design on the EMF/EMR Series lets the door be pulled manually past the hold open point without damaging the door, frame, holder/release device, or other hardware on the opening. That matters on high traffic corridors where people push through held doors rather than walking around them.
11) Can the 8956 EMR be installed without running wire through the frame?
Yes. The unit can be wired for concealed or surface wiring, so on a retrofit where you can't drill and fish the frame you can run surface raceway to it instead. That is usually the deciding factor on existing openings where the frame is already grouted in.
12) What is a hold-open track closer instead of just a magnetic door holder with a separate closer?
It combines both functions in one surface-mounted unit. Rather than a wall or floor mounted magnet plus a separate closer on the door, the 8956 EMR holds the door open in the track arm and closes it from the same body when released. Fewer parts on the wall, one power run, and no separate armature plate to align. If you already have a serviceable closer on the door and only need alarm release, a standalone magnetic holder is the simpler add.
13) I need a hold-open closer for a corridor door but the fire panel already covers detection. Do I need the detector version?
Not necessarily. When detection is handled by the building panel, a Grade 1 closer with an electronic hold-open track arm such as the Cal-Royal CR441EHO will hold and release on the panel signal. The DORMA 8956 EMR/PT adds a photoelectric detector at the door and can also be wired into a central alarm panel, so it suits openings where local smoke sensing at that specific location is wanted in addition to the system signal. Both are Grade 1 devices.
14) Will a standard Grade 1 hold-open closer work as a substitute for the DORMA 8956 EMR/PT on a pair of doors?
Only if the detection and release scheme still works out. The 8956 EMR/PT is a push side surface-mount electromagnetic holder/release track closer whose EMR unit can control one EMF unit for a pair of doors, so a single detector governs both leaves. A Grade 1 closer with an electronic hold-open track arm such as the Cal-Royal CR441EHO is a per-door device, so a pair would need both leaves signalled. Check that before swapping.
15) What finishes does the DORMA 8956 EMR/PT closer come in?
Six: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. 689 and 690 are the two that most commonly match existing DORMA closers already hanging in a commercial building, so if you are adding to a fleet check the number stamped on the units you have.
