Product details

Three models included

The EMF/EMR Series includes three models for price and door closer feature/function considerations. The TS93 in Contur Design, with the extra efficient cam and roller technology, can be used on larger doors, while the 8900 rack and pinion closer offers a narrow projection for less cost. When value engineering is a concern, the 8600 meets the need.

Patented hold open design

The EMF/EMR Series’ patented hold open design prevents damage to the door, frame, holder/release device, or other installed hardware. This design enables initial hold while allowing the door to be manually opened beyond the hold open point.

Compatibility and wiring

The EMF/EMR Series is compatible with new or existing fire/smoke control systems and can be wired for concealed or surface wiring.

Door shuts in case of an alarm state or power failure

In the case of an alarm state signaled by the central control system or main power failure, current to the electromagnetic hold open device is interrupted, thus allowing the door closing mechanism to take over and shut the door.

Dormakaba 8956-EMR-T-689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the DORMA 8956 EMR/T hold a corridor door open and release it when the fire alarm sounds?
That's exactly what the 8956 EMR/T does. It's a door closer with an electromagnetic hold-open built into the track, plus an integral photoelectric smoke detector. The detector can drop the door on its own for local smoke control, or the unit can be wired into a central fire/smoke alarm panel so the whole building releases together. When the panel signals an alarm state, or main power drops, current to the magnet is cut and the closer takes over and shuts the door.
2) Which side of the door does the DORMA 8956 EMR/T mount on, and does it need a left- or right-hand version?
Pull side mounting, and it's non-handed, so one unit covers both left- and right-hand openings. Pull side means the closer body and track sit on the face the door swings toward you, inside the room the door opens into. If your opening only allows push side or top jamb hardware, this is the wrong mount and you need a different configuration.
3) Is the 8956 EMR/T big enough for a heavy commercial corridor door?
It's a size 5 to 6 closer, heavy duty, and rated for commercial use. Sizes 5 and 6 are the upper end of the standard closer range, which is where wide or heavy doors land. The tradeoff is force: a size 5 or 6 spring is not a low-force setting, and this unit is not ADA compliant, so it will not meet a reduced opening force requirement on an accessible interior opening.
4) Can one DORMA 8956 EMR/T detector unit cover a pair of doors?
Yes. The EMR unit carries the detector and can control one EMF unit on the second leaf, so a pair of doors takes one 8956 EMR/T plus a matching EMF closer/holder. You only buy the detector once. Wire the pair together and both leaves release on the same signal.
5) Can the DORMA 8956 EMR/T be tied into a fire alarm system that is already installed?
It interfaces with new or existing fire/smoke control systems, so a retrofit into an installed panel is a supported install, not a workaround. Wiring can be run concealed through the frame or surface mounted, which is what makes it workable on an existing building where you cannot open up the frame.
6) The panel already has smoke detectors in the corridor. Do I need a closer with a detector built in, or will a plain electronic hold-open arm do?
If the release signal comes from a central fire/smoke panel that already has coverage at the opening, an electronic hold-open track arm such as the Cal-Royal CR441EHO, a Grade 1 closer with an electronic hold-open track arm, is wired to that panel and drops the door on the panel's signal. The DORMA 8956 EMR/T adds a photoelectric detector integrated into the unit, which lets it control smoke spread at that specific location on its own as well as when wired into a central alarm panel, and it can be wired concealed or on the surface. Choose the 8956 EMR/T when the authority having jurisdiction wants detection at the door leaf itself or when the opening is outside the coverage of the corridor detectors.
7) What is the closest equivalent to the DORMA 8956 EMR/T if I need a Grade 1 closer with an electronic hold-open track arm?
The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is a Grade 1 door closer with an electronic hold-open track arm, so it covers the same job as the DORMA 8956 EMR/T: a track closer that holds the door open on an energized magnet and releases it to close when current drops. The DORMA 8956 EMR/T is also Grade 1, is a rack and pinion track closer sized 5 to 6, and is non-handed, so one part number serves both door hands. The functional difference to settle before ordering is detection: the 8956 EMR/T carries an integral photoelectric detector so it can release on smoke sensed at the opening itself as well as on a signal from a central fire/smoke panel, while the CR441EHO is a hold-open arm released by the system it is wired into. If the opening needs local smoke detection built into the closer, that is the deciding spec.
8) Can a standard mechanical hold-open closer be substituted for the DORMA 8956 EMR/T on a fire door?
No. A mechanical hold-open detent keeps the door open until someone pushes it shut and does not respond to an alarm, while the DORMA 8956 EMR/T releases automatically: in an alarm state signaled by the central control system, or on main power failure, current to the electromagnetic hold open is interrupted and the closing mechanism shuts the door. Its patented hold open design also lets the door be pulled manually past the hold point without damaging the door, frame, or device. A like-for-like substitute has to be an electrically released hold-open unit, such as the Cal-Royal CR441EHO, a Grade 1 door closer with an electronic hold-open track arm.
9) Should I buy an EMR unit with the built-in detector or an EMF unit without one?
The choice comes down to whether the door needs to make its own decision. An EMR carries the integral photoelectric detector, so it will drop the door on smoke at that opening even with no panel connection. An EMF has the magnetic hold-open and closer but no detector, and relies on a signal from elsewhere. On a pair of doors, put the EMR on one leaf and let it control the EMF on the other. On a run of single doors already tied into a central fire/smoke panel, EMF units on the panel signal will do the job.
10) What happens if a tenant yanks the door past the hold-open point on a magnetic holder closer?
On the 8956 EMR/T nothing breaks. The hold open is a patented design that catches the door at the hold point but still lets someone pull it manually past that point without damaging the door, the frame, the holder/release unit, or the rest of the hardware. That matters in a corridor or a multi-family building where people will push a held door open rather than walk around it.
11) Is the DORMA 8956 EMR/T a Grade 1 closer, and is the hold-open device certified?
Grade 1, and the holder/release devices are ANSI/BHMA certified. Grade 1 is the highest of the three ANSI/BHMA duty grades and is what a spec on an institutional or commercial corridor opening normally calls for. Note it is not ADA compliant, so an accessible opening with an opening force limit needs different hardware.
12) What kind of closer mechanism is in the 8956 EMR/T, and how much does it stick out from the door?
Rack and pinion, running in a track rather than a projecting arm. That's the reason to pick the 8900 within the EMF/EMR family: it gives a narrow projection at lower cost than the cam-and-roller TS93. The tradeoff is capacity. If the door is larger than a rack and pinion track closer handles comfortably, the TS93 version of this series is the one with the extra efficient cam and roller technology for bigger doors, and the 8600 is the value-engineered end of the family.
13) I need a hold-open closer for an ADA-accessible entrance. Is the 8956 EMR/T the right choice?
The DORMA 8956 EMR/T is a heavy duty commercial closer in size 5 to 6, and it is not ADA compliant, so it is specified for large, high-traffic fire and smoke openings rather than for meeting accessible opening-force limits. Where the opening has to satisfy an accessibility requirement, look at a lower-size Grade 1 hold-open closer instead; the Cal-Royal CR441EHO is a Grade 1 door closer with an electronic hold-open track arm and should be checked against the size and opening force your accessibility spec calls for. On a heavy cross-corridor or stair door where the requirement is fire and smoke control rather than accessibility, the 8956 EMR/T is sized for it.
14) I have a pair of doors on a cross-corridor opening. Do I need two 8956 EMR/T units?
No. One DORMA 8956 EMR/T, which carries the photoelectric detector, can control one EMF unit on the second leaf of a pair, so the detector unit goes on one leaf and the non-detector holder/release closer goes on the other. Both leaves get an electromagnetic holder/release with an integral closer, but only one detector is purchased. If you were building the same pair from a peer such as the Cal-Royal CR441EHO, a Grade 1 closer with an electronic hold-open track arm, each leaf takes its own unit wired to the panel, since the release comes from the system rather than from a detector on the door.
15) Will a pull side surface-mount holder/release work if the door only has push side clearance?
The DORMA 8956 EMR/T is a surface-mount unit mounted on the pull side of the door, so the door face and the frame soffit on the pull side must be clear for the closer body and its track. If the pull side is obstructed and the release still has to come from the fire alarm system, an electronic hold-open track closer such as the Cal-Royal CR441EHO, a Grade 1 door closer with an electronic hold-open track arm, is worth checking against your mounting condition. Confirm the mounting face before ordering, because the 8956 EMR/T is non-handed but not reversible to a different mounting side.
16) What finishes does the DORMA 8956 EMR/T come in for matching existing door closers in a building?
Six finishes: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. Two of those are dark bronze codes, so match the exact BHMA number on the closers already hanging rather than the color word if you are trying to blend into an existing run of openings.
