Features

Three models included

The EMF/EMR Series includes three models for price and door closer feature/function considerations. The TS93 in Contur Design, with the extra efficient cam and roller technology, can be used on larger doors, while the 8900 rack and pinion closer offers a narrow projection for less cost. When value engineering is a concern, the 8600 meets the need.

Patented hold open design

The EMF/EMR Series’ patented hold open design prevents damage to the door, frame, holder/release device, or other installed hardware. This design enables initial hold while allowing the door to be manually opened beyond the hold open point.

Compatibility and wiring

The EMF/EMR Series is compatible with new or existing fire/smoke control systems and can be wired for concealed or surface wiring.

Door shuts in case of an alarm state or power failure

In the case of an alarm state signaled by the central control system or main power failure, current to the electromagnetic hold open device is interrupted, thus allowing the door closing mechanism to take over and shut the door.

Dormakaba 8956-EMF-T-695 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the DORMA 8956 EMF/T hold my fire door open and release it when the alarm sounds, or do I need a separate detector?
The 8956 EMF/T is the holder/release closer without an integral detector. It holds the door open electromagnetically and drops it closed when current is interrupted, either by an alarm signal from the central fire/smoke control system or by a main power failure. That means it has to be wired into a fire alarm panel or smoke detection system to do its job. If you want the detection built into the device itself, that is the EMR version, which carries the photoelectric detector on board and can control one EMF unit for a pair of doors.
2) Do I have to specify handing on the DORMA 8956 EMF/T track closer?
Handing is a required selection, right hand or left hand, even though the closer body itself is non-handed. The track and hold-open assembly is what makes the choice matter, so stand at the door on the pull side and determine the swing before you order.
3) Can the 8956 EMF/T mount on the push side of the door?
No. The 8956 EMF/T is a pull side surface-mount unit, so it goes on the same face the door pulls toward, with the track on that face. If the frame or existing hardware on the pull side blocks the track run, this is not the unit for that opening.
4) Is the DORMA 8956 electromagnetic hold-open closer strong enough for a heavy fire door?
Closer size 5 to 6 with a heavy duty, Grade 1 rating, which covers wide and heavy commercial fire doors. Size 5 and 6 are the largest of the standard closer sizes, so this is the range you go to for oversized openings rather than a light interior door. On a smaller door, a size 5 to 6 closer will feel heavy to operate.
5) Does the DORMA 8956 EMF/T meet ADA opening force requirements?
No. The 8956 EMF/T is not ADA compliant. If the opening is on an accessible route and has to meet reduced opening force, this closer will not satisfy that requirement and you should look at a low-energy or ADA-rated closer instead.
6) What is a Grade 1 alternative to the DORMA 8956 EMF/T when the opening needs a closer with an electronic hold-open track arm?
The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is a Grade 1 door closer with an electronic hold-open track arm, the same combination the 8956 EMF/T provides: a Grade 1, heavy duty, electronic track closer that holds the door open and releases it on an alarm or power interruption. Both are built around a track arm with an electrically controlled hold-open rather than a mechanical detent, so either can serve a corridor or smoke barrier door tied into a fire alarm system. Confirm handing when ordering the 8956 EMF/T, which is specified right hand or left hand.
7) I need a hold-open closer that also senses smoke at the door itself - is the 8956 EMF/T the right pick?
The 8956 EMF/T is the version without a detector; it takes its release signal from a fire or smoke control system it is wired into, either concealed or surface wiring. When the release has to come from a detector mounted at the door rather than from a panel, the EMR model in the same 8900 EMF family carries the photoelectric detector and can control one EMF unit for a pair of doors, so a common arrangement is an EMR on the active leaf driving an 8956 EMF/T on the other. The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is also a Grade 1 electronic hold-open track closer that takes its signal from the system rather than from an onboard detector.
8) Will a standard Grade 1 door closer with a hold-open arm work in place of the 8956 EMF/T?
No - a mechanical hold-open arm holds the door open until someone pushes it shut, and it will keep holding during an alarm. The 8956 EMF/T is an electromagnetic holder/release: current to the magnet is interrupted on an alarm signal or main power failure and the integral closer shuts the door. A substitute has to be electrically released the same way, which is what the Cal-Royal CR441EHO provides with its Grade 1 electronic hold-open track arm. A mechanical hold-open closer, whatever its grade, is not an equivalent on a door that has to self-close on alarm.
9) What happens to the door if the building loses power with the 8956 EMF/T installed?
The door closes. Power loss interrupts current to the electromagnetic hold open, and the closer mechanism takes over and shuts the door, the same behavior as an alarm state. It is fail-safe by design, so a power outage never leaves a fire door standing open.
10) Can the 8956 EMF/T be tied into a fire alarm system that is already in the building, and can the wiring be concealed?
Yes on both. The EMF/EMR Series works with new or existing fire and smoke control systems, and it can be wired concealed through the frame or run on the surface, so you are not forced to open up a finished frame on a retrofit.
11) What happens if someone pushes the door past the hold-open point on a DORMA EMF hold-open closer?
Nothing breaks. The patented hold open design lets the door be manually opened beyond the hold open point without damaging the door, frame, holder/release device, or other hardware on the opening. That matters on high-traffic corridors where staff or carts routinely shove a held-open door further back.
12) How does the 8956 EMF/T compare to a Cal-Royal CR441EHO electronic hold-open closer?
Both are Grade 1 closers with an electronic hold-open track arm. The difference is what we hold on record: the 8956 EMF/T is documented as a pull side surface-mount unit with a rack and pinion track, sized 5 to 6 for heavy commercial fire doors, and it is the no-detector version meant to be wired into a fire alarm panel. The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is the alternative to look at if you want an electronic hold-open track arm from a different manufacturer at Grade 1.
13) Which DORMA EMF model should I pick if projection or budget is the concern?
The EMF/EMR Series runs three closer bodies. The 8900 rack and pinion closer, which is what the 8956 uses, gives a narrow projection off the door at lower cost. The TS93 in Contur Design uses cam and roller technology and is the one for larger doors. The 8600 is the value-engineered option when budget drives the decision.
14) The 8956 EMF/T is pull side mount - what are the options within the 8900 EMF family for a heavier or a narrower door?
The 8956 EMF/T is a pull side surface-mount track closer using a rack and pinion track, sized 5 to 6 for heavy duty commercial openings. Within the EMF/EMR family there are three closer models to choose from: the TS93 in Contur Design with cam and roller technology for larger doors, the 8900 rack and pinion closer with a narrow projection, and the 8600 where value engineering is the driver. The 8956 EMF/T is non-handed as a unit with handing specified at order. For a Grade 1 electronic hold-open track closer outside the family, the Cal-Royal CR441EHO covers the same function.
15) For standardizing hold-open closers across a facility, how do the DORMA 8956 EMF/T and the Cal-Royal CR441EHO differ in what you specify per door?
Both are Grade 1 closers with an electrically released hold-open track arm. The 8956 EMF/T is ordered with a handing selection, right hand or left hand, and a finish from 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, or 696 satin brass, and it is a commercial heavy duty unit rated closer size 5 to 6. The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is specified as a Grade 1 closer with the electronic hold-open track arm. Where a facility wants one finish across a run of corridor doors, the six-finish range on the 8956 EMF/T is the deciding detail.
16) What finishes does the DORMA 8956 EMF/T come in for matching other hardware in the building?
Six finishes: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. 689 aluminum and 693 black are the two that match most commercial frames and existing closers; the bronzes cover older brass and bronze hardware suites when you are standardizing a corridor.
17) Is the DORMA 8956 EMF/T suitable for a residential application?
It is a commercial device. The 8956 EMF/T is built for commercial fire and life safety openings, wired to a building fire alarm system, at Grade 1 heavy duty. There is no residential use case for it.
